Palace in Campbell Talks
Thursday, 17th Jan 2013 16:04

Crystal Palace boss Ian Holloway has confirmed that he has spoken to QPR regarding former Blues loanee DJ Campbell. The 31-year-old has been told he can leave Loftus Road with Town manager Mick McCarthy still keen to add him to his squad, despite signing strikers David McGoldrick, Aaron Mclean and Frank Nouble since Campbell’s departure earlier this month.

Holloway, who was Campbell’s manager at Blackpool, says that although he has spoken to his QPR counterpart Harry Redknapp, no deal has yet been done: "Have I rung Harry Redknapp? Yeah. Does that mean I'm going to get him? No. Am I fighting for him? Yeah. Will I get him? I don't know.

"But it's him and AN Other. There are lots of other players I could get. I think deals which get done you should talk about but deals that don't, you shouldn't.

"I never promise the fans anything I can't produce. I remember the Quincy Jones song The Dude, 'don't let your mouth write a cheque that your body can't cash'. That's what I don't like doing.

"I'm trying my best, the board are trying their best to add to the group and we know time is ticking."

In addition to Town and Palace, Bolton Wanderers and Cardiff City have also been linked with the striker.

The Blues offered Campbell personal terms and discussed a fee with the Premier League’s bottom side before his three-month loan spell ended.

Elsewhere, Colchester boss Joe Dunne says there have still been no formal offers for Town target Anthony Wordsworth: "There've been bits of interest over the last day or so, but I haven't had a firm bid.

“Anthony's still here and we've got to the point now where he needs to focus on getting back playing again. Although he's still serving a suspension [which has one game left], he'll be working hard over the next week or so."

Meanwhile, we understand Nottingham Forest keeper Lee Camp has continued to hold talks with the various interested clubs in the last few days. Camp, 28, has been told he can leave the City Ground having failed to agree terms on a new deal with his current contract up in the summer.

Not a surprise really. DJ's done very well and I'd love to see him sign, but I think someone of his quality will be attracting a lot of offers and as as he's nearing the end of his 'top end' playing days and contracts, I guess he'll go wherever the money is good as well as a shot of getting back into the Premier Leauge pretty quickly... which could be us, but not this season I fear. Would be more surprised if we signed him rather than Palace if I'm being honest...

Done deal already isn't it? He's 31, and we have brought in a 25 year old who is in good form. Not too fussed if Mcgoldrick continues his form.

Think MM had a feeling that we might not get him, and could be why he brought 3 strikers in. Mclean may now become a perminment signing as I felt he would go back at the end of the season if we signed Campbell.

Sign of a good manager who can move for other targets if we miss out on another, in the past we have chased a player for a month then lose out and spend another month looking for someone else

I for one would love to have him back but it wont be a disastrous January if he doesnt.

In previous years weve put all our eggs in one basket and banked on getting one player, only to miss out at the end of the window. Weve then panicked bought/loaned and ended up with someone we didnt really want. At least now MM has already strengthened us up top with some excellent additions and we wont be short should DJ not return.

Im also keen for Wordsworth to come too. Hopefully we can tie that one up for the cheap as chips price as has been speculated. COYB.

It's a real shame if he doesn't sign for us, being our top scorer and all. Ian Holloway is a very funny man. When was the last time a football manager quoted Quincy Jones? I think that we have the funniest two managers in the league. I believe that our new signings will have the best brought out of them by MM and TC. Not since JR did I feel our club was in safe hands. I think Camp would be a fantastic signing as well. I know we gave the cocky bugger some serious grief but if he signs he will be our cocky bugger.

I'm actually not fussed about signing him, i'd like him to come if he doesn't want massive wages but let's be honest we have 8 or 9 strikers at the minute so i see Camp and Wordsworth as more important signings.

I would like to see DJ back. But will he want to return, when there is a chance of joining a Championship club who have a chance of promotion? Time will tell.

Im not holding my breath on this one now. The cards are stacked in favour of the London Club.

We will not get a word from MM until a deal is done. DJ did well for us but is 31, i think MM is looking for younger players.

In an ideal world we would get him for reasonable money and only on a 2 year contract - that's obviously unlikely. If he's looking for 3 years then I imagine the money and location factors, along with hoping for premier league action will sway DJ towards Palace.

My fear at the moment is that Mclean, McGoldrick and Nouble are yet to settle into the team and some players take some time to find the net, whilst Chopra is yet to produce the goods and Taylor is obviously sidelined. For these reasons, and the fact that relegation isn't an impossibility, then I would like us to try hard to sign DJ.

Cash will be important to him, as it is to all of us.

I dont think promotion to the Premier will be that important to him, afterall he is not deemed of any use to the club that are currently bottom of the Prem.

He will continue to to a good job for someone in our league though.

A decent contract a playing in the top half of the league will be his aim. Still got a good 2-3 years in him at this level.

Would really like him back here as much as anyone, but at 31 he must be thinking to himself that if he wants a crack at the top flight then he has to choose a team that is realistically in with a chance of promotion this season. With Holloway coming in for him, a manager whom he quite clearly has a very good understanding with from their Blackpool days together, we honestly don't stand too much of a chance of signing him, but hey what do I know.
Thank you DJ for playing such an important part in getting us out of the mire we were in with those crucial goals you scored. But if things don't go as planned with a move to Palace then there are open arms at Portman Road waiting for you.
Shame about Orr if he goes back, after a stuttering start to his loan you can see he is fundimently a sound player, who has added to the team,
Hope the game goes on Saturday against Barnsley, looking forward to seeing the new players.

Crystal Palace it is then, money and real chance of Premier football, 'no brainer'

What would you do..........be honest, last chance getting yourself a decent contract.

MM knows knew this would happen, been the game too long, that's why we have other options, It was always on the cards when your in form and on loan.

P.S. Mention of Taylor above. I'd forget about him, no use making future plans built around him given the uncertainty a court case brings........

...if he appears in a town shirt again it should be viewed as a bonus, as it should only happen if found innocent.

Unfortunately I don't think we will get DJC I am guessing he will get longer and better deals elsewhere. Seems MM already knows this with his recent signings which I believe will turn out to be very good. Hope I am wrong as he did a great job while at Town. Good luck to him wherever he ends up his goals have helped us out of a desperate position and moved us up the table.
