Edwards Set for International Summer
Tuesday, 30th Apr 2013 09:22

Town skipper Carlos Edwards will be in international action with Trinidad and Tobago at the CONCACAF Gold Cup during the summer. As a result, the 34-year-old, who has previously won 84 caps and scored four international goals, will miss the start of pre-season at Town.

The midfielder was pleased that the Blues’ relegation battle finally came to an end on Saturday and is now looking forward to representing his country at the Gold Cup in the United States in July.

Prior to that, the Soca Warriors take on Romania in Bucharest on June 4th and Estonia in Tallinn on June 7th in preparation for the tournament, where they face Honduras, El Salvador and Haiti, but we understand the Blues midfielder won't take part in the friendlies.

“I’m delighted to have scored to help Ipswich stay up,” Edwards told the Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation. “It’s been a long, hard season for us but we came out well and we just want to finish the season and look ahead to next season.

“The next order of business for me is putting on the national shirt again. I’m excited about the next few weeks leading into the Gold Cup. This will be my first Gold Cup appearance and I think it’s an excellent opportunity for us to put ourselves back on the football map."

Trinidad and Tobago start their group games with a match against El Salvador in Harrison, New Jersey on July 8th with Town’s pre-season preparations already having begun in the final week of June.

Their group matches end on July 15th when they come up against Honduras with the tournament running until July 28th, although the Soca Warriors are unlikely to be involved in the latter stages.

As with Tommy Smith and others after previous summers of international action, Edwards is likely to be given a break before rejoining the Town squad for the 2013/14 campaign, which starts on August 4th.

Meanwhile, Burnley manager Sean Dyche says he’ll bring one of two youngsters into his squad for Saturday’s final match of the season against Town at Turf Moor: “We’ll definitely look at some of the younger players — whether they’re on the bench, they’ll be around it somewhere. We’ll look at the group over the next couple of days and decide then.”

Good luck Carlos. Just make sure you come back fit and fresh for next season. I would also like to see Marriott get half an hour against Burnley too.

Different article but couldn't seem to comment on N'Daw piece. Assuming Hyam maintains his performance level, what sort of player would you like to see come in? Druthers is decent back up but I think Mick will look to get someone in as Luke's partner.

Wolves links, likes of Henry and Edwards would probably be seen as solid signings. Hopefully we'll look at Judge from Notts County again as a wide option. Mention of the lad from
Pompey too, that would be a very youthful centre pairing though...

Re wolves links...o'hara would compliment hyam well, but maybe a bit similar to wordsworth? ebanks blake on a free transfer would be very good.. and sterman is a must. | think henry is a bit to similar to hyam..

Ebanks-Blake could surely still do a good job given the right ammunition, would be a powerful/pacey attack with McGoldrick and Nouble...power and pace, gosh that sounds good, I've just had flashbacks of Rory Fallon, Stern John et al.

If Mick could persuade Kevin Doyle in and get him back to his best, another tantalising thought.

On another note I will be watching Ed Upson closely for Yeovil in the play-offs, become a regular fixture in their side playing at a decent level and scores some quality goals. Worth keeping an eye on him, I'm sure Klug already has it covered!

Would be nice to think we could poach some players from other Championship clubs, I think Mick could have that pulling power, unlike the Pompey fiasco where we basically get taken for a ride. Although I would guess any move to a rival would be looking at high fees, Oliver Norwood at Huddersfield look s a decent prospect.

..... thought he stated previously that his International interest was over in preference to his commitment to ITFC ??
Not exactly the best way of the Captain starting the new season if it means him missing pre season with his 'bread & butter' Club !!

Probably get a few minus's for this - but not as if he is going anywhere with his International career at his age.
A case of 'where the loyalties lay ' I guess.

Go on - hit the minus button - but I feel quite strongly about this ( and maybe a few others do too ! ).

Really important our players have a break and come back refreshed. Important summer for MIck to bring in his own players, need a clear out let's start with Lee Martin. Lets hope Marcus Evans invests in him. Previous managers have not spent wisely will he have faith. Automatic promotion next season?

For most players - the reign under PJ has simply been horrendous. Edwards was one of those who lost all confidence. Jewell, was very very poor. Under MM everyone seems to be enjoying their football and finally we have a man manager who is encouraging players, young and old, to perform to their best. I'll never understand why we appointed Paul Jewell (sorry in advance to those who still love him), but with MM we can finally look forward to the future of this club.

Looking at the N'Daw article gives the impression he will not be here next season . Perhaps he has been informed that he is too expensive or maybe not wanted .

Go for 100 caps, Carlos. And come back fit and raring to go!

N'Daw is not an £8,0000 a week playe r, let alone an £18,000 a week player. If I'd known he were costing us that much, I might not have been so supportive of him. I heard a really good Ben Thatcher vs Roy Keane story today, which did a surprising thing, which is ma ke BT come out in a really good light. RK apparently totally nuts. Not exactly a surprise there then, but still, totally nuts. I hope this isn't libellous content
