Chopra Still Planning to Stay at Town
Monday, 3rd Jun 2013 09:27

Striker Michael Chopra has again said he could decide to stay at Town for the remaining year of his contract, despite manager Mick McCarthy making him available for transfer at the end of the season.

Chopra, whose relationship with supporters has been less than harmonious in the wake of his well-documented off-field issues and Twitter controversies, tweeted: “Might stay at Ipswich as I know how much the Ipswich fans love me keep telling people I don't need to leave.”

The 29-year-old was told he could find another club along with Jay Emmanuel-Thomas at the end of the campaign having failed to secure a regular place in the side but quickly indicated that he might choose to remain at Portman Road: “Just coz I'm on the transfer list does not mean I have to leave. I have one year left on my contract, it’s down to the player if he wants to go or not.”

While Fulham are targeting Emmanuel-Thomas, so far there has been little speculation regarding clubs coming in for Chopra, although a number of sides — including now-promoted Hull City — showed interest in signing him on loan in January.

One report this weekend claimed Chopra could move on a free transfer, a not unlikely scenario as McCarthy looks to off-load his wage - the striker is understood to be one of the club's top earners - in order to add to his summer transfer budget.

Not sure where he got the idea that the fans love him, the amount of abuse he gets on Twitter, and his petulant, immature responses to them time and time again suggest otherwise.

Really thought we were signing a maturing, proven goalscorer when we got him. Unfortunately he's been a huge liability, and a gamble that's still costing us.

He only signed for us to get his signing on fee... for his gambling exploits. If he won't do all a favour and get lost.... maybe just pay him off (less the 250k he owes).
I despise him !!!

"don't NEED to leave" - if he says "don't WANT to leave" people may be more sympathetic.

If he does stay, he owes us 26 goals from his promise to us last season plus another 30 goals for coming season

Thinks he's probably just rubbing our noses in it with that remark... But if he's not... can someone send him the link to this website... he'll get a better idea then of what people think.

Seems to me that he's hoping that he gets his contract terminated and gets paid off. Then he has a nice large lump sum of money. Although, doesn't he owe the club money, from a previous bail out? This is so sad. When he joined my son was in awe of him and had his name printed on the back of his shirt. Then we read all the problems and it leaves a terribel taste in the mouth.

Read the statement again, there's no punctuation in there he's just being sarcastic. Would be interesting to hear MM's line on this and everythng else for that matter. A lot of air needs clearing at the moment.

Before reading this I was still feeling a tiny last scrap of disappointment about him being listed. I don't know, maybe I was being overoptimistic and thinking that he may yet come good for us and score some goals. But to make these comments, which basically say "I am going to be a bitter douche and squeeze every last penny I can out of the club and my contract", Have finally sent me over the edge. ITFC have had infinite patience with this clown, and have bent over backwards to help him out. It's a shame his memory doesn't stretch back as far as the large sum the club shelled out for him to attend gambling rehab for example.

The least he owes the club, if not the fans, is to do one last service of moving on to another club if they want to buy him and allowing us to recoup some of the money that we flushed down the toilet on him.

The annoying thing is because of the poor punctuation I am reading what he is saying three different ways! It's so annoying. I want to reply but don't know what he is bloomin' well saying!

Absolute disgrace of a man. Has no respect whatsoever for what the club did for him by giving him money and sending him to rehab. Good finishers in his prime but past it and just a waste of space. Shocking behaviour towards our club

Cant see him leaving willingly, but then again cant see anyone wanting to make a bid. Like most people have said I was quite hopeful when we signed him but has been more trouble then hes worth. Having said that he has had a bit more of an impact in the secound half of the season though. Another problem which is also mentioned in the article is the amount of wages he is on which could quite rightly be used on a younger more promising player.

When he's on form he's an asset to us, but can also appear quite divisive at times, and mischievous on Twittr. If he is still here at start of season it would be beneficial to loan him out, so as to guarantee him game time and cause minimal disruption to our squad.
