Southampton Amongst Clubs Eyeing Cresswell
Tuesday, 11th Jun 2013 00:39

Southampton are amongst the increasing number of Premier League clubs understood to be eyeing Blues left-back Aaron Cresswell. Aston Villa were recently reported to be ready to revive last summer’s interest in the 23-year-old, while Fulham and Crystal Palace have also been mentioned in connection with the ex-Tranmere man.

The Saints regularly sent scouts to Portman Road last season, both during Nigel Adkins’s time in charge and after Mauricio Pochettino took over as boss.

Whether they firm up their interest may depend on them holding on to £10 million-rated 17-year-old Luke Shaw, who has been linked with the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham.

While the Blues will be looking for rather more for Cresswell, perhaps as much as £5 million, an offer in excess of £3 million may well be enough to tempt Town to sell with Mick McCarthy using the cash to strengthen his squad for the season ahead.

Interest in Cresswell will come as no surprise to the Town boss, who said that he was expecting it towards the end of the season. The Blues manager said he views the defender as “a Premier League footballer in the making”.

The left-back, who is contracted to the Blues until June 2015, joined Town from Tranmere at the end of his terms at Prenton Park in the summer of 2011.

Rovers are entitled to 20% of the profit Town would make on the £420,000 they paid for Cresswell if he is sold. A Football League tribunal set a compensation figure of an initial £240,000 plus milestone clauses with only a £100,000 payment on promotion to the Premier League not triggered.

I think MM will be a muppet if he sells Creswell, even for a super profit.

At long last the team has a solid back four thats really hard to beat. If the team do make the play offs, and who knows go even further, we need the like of him.

On top of the Creswell is fond of running up front.

Don't be tempted Mick!

I dont think MM would be a muppett for selling cresswell for a decent profit, thats football at the end of the day.

Every player has his price, EVERY player.

He's a very very good player but, unfortunately, in my opinion left back is a position easier to fill than say, a striker who knocks in 25 a season.

Of course I'd rather he stays but if by selling him gives MM a bigger playing budget then so be it.

I don't want to see Cressie go but unfortunately the facts of FFP life are likely to mean that we have to produce good young players to sell to premiership clubs or to those with parachute payments. The wages cap means many half decent players out of contract will be looking for clubs and whilst most clubs will imposes a strict wages structure what little may have been in the transfer kitty will get sucked up in signing on fees for the better players (a way of giving cash upfront to the player but then a wage that fits in with the structure). I can see big transfer fees outside the priemership becoming a rarer thing with perhaps some modest exchanges between Championship clubs and the lower leagues.

Therefore if we get more than a £3 million offer we should take it and move on and start grooming Tyrone Mings as another possible sale in 2 years time unless we get to the promised land before that.

I can see the rest of the jigsaw panning out like this:

JET to go to Fulham on season long loan, Stockdale to be swapped in this loan deal (but with 24 hour recall again), young Fulham player to move permanently as a squad member.

Chopra to go on season long loan - possibly to Hull.

Town to sign a young third choice back-up keeper.

Money received on Cresswell invested in a knockdown price for Stearman.

Jack Marriot to be loaned out until January to lower league team.

Ebanks-Blake to join on a contract to include fitness clauses and extension.

Mark Yeates to sign on a bosman.

Kilgallon to join as first choice left back.

The ironic thing about the interested clubs listed is that in 1 or 2 years time Cressy could find himself back in the Championship (looking up at someone playing left back for Town in the Prem!?).

One thing MM can certainly do is defence. If it's deemed prudent to sell AC, for financial reasons, or, as few seem to be mentioning, to satisfy the player's ambitions - that's how we got him in the first place remember - then I've no doubt that the manager will find somebody more than adequate to replace him, whether it be Mings or somebody else. He could have me in at left back and I'd probably play all right, and I'm 45 years old and sh*t. MM is a defensive genius as we've seen this season. And anyway, it's only speculation.

If we sell Cresswell we could afford to buy Stearman, sign up Kilgallon and Yeates and take someone like Billy Sharp on loan - good business in my book.
