Southampton Amongst Clubs Eyeing Cresswell
Tuesday, 11th Jun 2013 00:39

Southampton are amongst the increasing number of Premier League clubs understood to be eyeing Blues left-back Aaron Cresswell. Aston Villa were recently reported to be ready to revive last summer’s interest in the 23-year-old, while Fulham and Crystal Palace have also been mentioned in connection with the ex-Tranmere man.

The Saints regularly sent scouts to Portman Road last season, both during Nigel Adkins’s time in charge and after Mauricio Pochettino took over as boss.

Whether they firm up their interest may depend on them holding on to £10 million-rated 17-year-old Luke Shaw, who has been linked with the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham.

While the Blues will be looking for rather more for Cresswell, perhaps as much as £5 million, an offer in excess of £3 million may well be enough to tempt Town to sell with Mick McCarthy using the cash to strengthen his squad for the season ahead.

Interest in Cresswell will come as no surprise to the Town boss, who said that he was expecting it towards the end of the season. The Blues manager said he views the defender as “a Premier League footballer in the making”.

The left-back, who is contracted to the Blues until June 2015, joined Town from Tranmere at the end of his terms at Prenton Park in the summer of 2011.

Rovers are entitled to 20% of the profit Town would make on the £420,000 they paid for Cresswell if he is sold. A Football League tribunal set a compensation figure of an initial £240,000 plus milestone clauses with only a £100,000 payment on promotion to the Premier League not triggered.

How can a club mamagement that claims to be going all out for a promotion push could sell a play like Cresswell is beyond me. Keeping him would prove that they are actually running a football club and not a business. MM would not get the money that was shown buy the dissapearance of the Wickam money. Cresswell is one of the players we should put a hands of notice on and build a team around if we are serious about a push for the premiereship.

Unless its for huge money I think it'll be a case of waiting until December and see where the club are in the league. If we are in-or-around the top six then I think he'll stay, if not then 'good luck in the premier league'.

This is something that I have long feared; premiership clubs coming in for our best youngsters like Cresswell, Smith, Hyam. Losing any of them would be a blow to the club and I don't think it would do their development any good. The trouble is that you have to be realistic. If a big club comes in with big money it is hard for either the player or Ipswich to say no.

Whatever we get for Cressy it won't go back into the team anyway.

Don't sell him.

cresswell could slot in nicely and play for a lower prem side in my opinion -look at gareth mcauley a regular at west brom.
If we get offered 3 million plus i think it wont be micks decision anymore ME will step in.
If cresswell wants the oppotunity there is no point keeping him here against his will
as that wont be good for either party.
for all the slagging lee martin got I feel he provided very good protection for cresswell and it remains to be seen how well he would fare with a player in front of him who dosent track back the way lee did. We have a very good player to replace him in mings if he goes so im not too worried.
If he goes il wish him well if he stays il be pleased as well

Funny isn't it - Shaw, 17 Premiership player = £10m. Cresswell, 23, Championship player = £3m.

Mings was more than decent v Burnley.

Sell him and with the money , pay off Chops.

Walderswick - I'm really galdyou are not running the club. With £4m-£5m we could easily pay off Chops AND have enough left to refurbish the board room, give the turnstiles another lick of paint and install a statue of Finidi George.

Today 3 million gets u 2 or 3 average players at best. I would rather keep an excellent one. those who say Creswell's is not worth 3 million are clueless.

I think Cresswell is our most talented player.

£3 million would be bad business. If we have any real desire to get promotion we can't sell him, unless it is silly money (Wickham type)

I think the better team we have the more we will get out of Cresswell

@rolly and others. His value becomes slightly subdued by only having 2 years left on his contract. In 12 months time he'll have virtually no value at all. We should be pragmatic and if he won't sign extended terms then 34 million looks good to me. No doubt we'll get the usual sell on clause also etc

The problem we have is the club isnt in a good enough position to turn down good offers for any of are players like other i would like to see him stay as he is one of our best players and will help is push on to better things next season but if we get a offer and evans say its to good turn down lets hope mr evans do ryt thing and give mm some money to do some good bussiness on other players and not pocket it all

Anything under £8 MILLION and they can go and do one!

We don't need to sell and in fact we should be doing everything we can to deter bids for our players. Cresswell will be an integral part of our promotion winning team next season and if the board shows any kind of ambition at all they should be keeping the likes of Cressy at all costs. We should be building a team with stability not keep chopping and changing every season.

He's a very able lb and us great at going forward, but why not wait to see if he. An become a premier league player with us next season? Then if we don't go up fair enoug he can move on. I would want 5.5-6 mil for him.

to me cressy has to stay if we want to build a good team, if we keep finding little jems like him and build the team then if we are good enough for promotion we might just stay there this time, but if we sell players like him then we just end up with average players and end up hovering around the relegation zone, there is alot of average dross out there and even in the prem, so best we try and keep him, if we can get hewitt bomb down the right and defend well, and from what i have seen he can, then we will have a great back four to build from,

Just to correct some........... I guess younger fans! We haven't always been a selling club! That didn't start until poor Bobby Ferguson was forced to sell our players after Sir Bobby left.
I'm sorry but at 23 Cressy is not in the same category as Roades & Wickam (Young & Developing)
Sir Bobby blooded players at seventeen, the list is endless, He took a winning team to Arsenal the average age was 21.
If Sir Bobby sold a fans favourite he always replaced him with someone better.
As every one on here keeps saying in Mick we trust, I will assume if he sells it will be for a very good price & he will also have some one to fill the gap who is equally as good if not better, maybe young Mings?
We are not being Managed by Roy Keane..................have some faith.!!!!!!!!!

I would settle for £4m. We are talking about a half-decent, lower half of the table Prem footballer - nowhere near Ashley Cole / Leighton Baines standard. Baines was 18 when he was playing regularly in the Champ with Wigan and was then playing in the Prem as a first choice LB at the age of 20.

Those years do make the difference. I think he would have made it by now if we are talking about a real gem.

Thats no disrespect to the guy, he is decent - let's just all be realisitic - it would'nt be the end of the world.

BossMan is correct. If I was advising Creswell I would be telling him to stay where he is and run down his contract. In the next two years Ipswich might be promoted in which case he would be in an excellent position to negotiate a very fat new deal. If not, then he can go on a free as an experienced but still young player on, guess what, a very fat new deal. The trouble is that it is very difficult, especially when young, to resist a big club with big money now.
Cynical? Yes, but that is football today.

I'm afraid whether we like it or not, every single player has their price. If we get a good offer for Cresswell then I think he will leave - and frankly I wouldn't blame him - PL football is an excellent opportunity for him.

Even big clubs like Arsenal and Manchester United cash in on their better players when a decent offer is on the table. RVP and Ronaldo spring to mind.

I think Cresswell has a very good chance of starting games for a team like Southampton and if he does leave I would wish him well. I just hope any funds received will be used to bring in new players.

Cressy has been an excellent purchase but is still found wanting on many ocassions defensively. I personally think a £3million bid will be enough but he is gonna struggle in the PL as he gets draw too narrow many times . For me Mings will be a more than adequet replacement. Look at the positives we will make money and as long as MM spends wisely this could be good business. Good luck Cressy if you realise ur dream.

........ a tidy young left back - but certainly has his price.

Anyone who thinks he's the finished article by a mile - need to think again.

As good, if not better out there - and for a lot less than we could probably sell him for.
If he goes - so what - move on.
