McCarthy Watched Manchester United Defender
Wednesday, 17th Jul 2013 01:28

Boss Mick McCarthy watched Manchester United’s reserves beat Club Brugge 1-0 in a friendly on Monday with central defender Scott Wootton understood to be the reason for his trip to the North-West. The 21-year-old is available for loan.

Birkenhead-born Wootton was a youth player with Tranmere and Liverpool before moving to Old Trafford in 2007.

The 6ft 2in tall defender has made three cup starts and one sub appearance for United but is yet to feature in the Premier League.

Wootton has previously spent time out on loan at Tranmere, Peterborough (twice) and Nottingham Forest. The England U17 international was in the Posh side which beat Town 7-1 during 2011/12.

Loans only in an emergency or with a view to a permanent signing, really dont want to bring on other clubs players for them, no thanks, not the way forward........COPYB

Whilst I think that PJ over used the loan system which was one of the basis of his failings I think the loan market is going to be used even more so in the next few seasons, especially whilst clubs find their feet with FFP. The big clubs with the tops graded academies can afford the young players and I think clubs such as ours will (with the right management) create a squad of players which will mainly consist of our own players but with the addition of loans to fill the gaps. We can't afford big squads anymore so this will be the way forward, it's also beneficial to the parent club even if the player goes out on loan as cover, he may not get much game time but he will get experience around a first team squad and that will be much more advantageous than him sitting in his own youth development squad.
