Town Confirm Chopra Exit
Thursday, 25th Jul 2013 10:34

Town have confirmed that striker Michael Chopra has joined Blackpool on a one-year deal with an option for a further season. The 29-year-old was at Playford Road this morning to say his goodbyes.

Last night, Chopra, who cost Town £1 million when he signed from Cardiff in June 2011, revealed that he had undergone a medical having spent this week talking to other clubs.

The former Newcastle and Sunderland man made 56 starts and 26 sub appearances, scoring 19 times in a spell overshadowed by off-field issues.

Despite having had a fractious relationship with fans, particularly on social media, Chopra tweeted his thanks to all at Portman Road: "Would like to thank Ipswich Town Football Club and their fans for the support they have given me in the last two years."

He added: "New challenge and a fresh start for me. Can't wait to pull on the Blackpool FC shirt and play in front of their great supporters ."

Meanwhile, new left winger Jack Doherty has been handed the number 21 shirt.

You will also notice on the sports bar on sky news thats runs across the bottom that whenever we sign somebody it is never mentioned, yet if a reserve player from walsall farts its makes it!

sometimes i wish the groundsmen just didn't bother for the leicester game in the snow!

BillBlue - I think we can look for the answer to the Sky conundrum a bit closer to home. We have for the past 4-5 seasons been a lower mid-table Championship side (occasionally flirting with the relegation places) scoring a lot less goals than other sides, not really "bums on seats" entertainment. Testament to that is the diminishing crowds at PR in this period and the lack of a 20-goals a season striker, which brings us on to Mr. Chopra, who was supposed to be the answer. I wish him well at Blackpool, but I at least expect him to act with dignity in his departure from our great club, something he didn't always do when he was here.

I doubt if hew will be missed. He was never a 20 goal a season man anyway and his sickness did not help his cause. that reminds me Phil, do you know whether Town got their 250.000 back that they let him borrow when some Newcastle mind-its came around to the training ground?

Pay off the remaining year of his contract - does that mean he's paid the £ 250000 back then - bet the 12 people the club has made redundant are well happy with that....

Glad we aren't on sky really, Sky clearly don't see us as a top team or even one to get promoted this season. However the most annoying thing is if we do well and are in with a shout of promotion they will switch and change our games around and piss around with our kick-off times next year. Real pity we can't say well you never had us on at the start of the season so go and take a hike as we are not changing our games now!

In response to Blueberry's post about no ITFC games.... I completely agree! As the name suggests as a Midlands based blue to have no coverage is a joke (although I will be at all games within a 100 mile radius of Telford). My only hope is that town do so well this season that Sky have a huge amount of egg on their face and that our position in the league force them to get some of our games on later in the season....
As for Chopra..... really thought when we signed him he was a 20 goals a season man, was really excited as I thought he was the experienced striker who was premier league class.... turns out he wasn't even a 20 goals every two seasons man...
I still think at 29 he could still prove to be a force in this division but that is not reason to keep him, I hope that when we play them Mr Berra and his merry band of defenders give him, within the rules of the game of course, a torrid time as he has not paid back the loyalty and support he has been given and there are very few who come to ITFC who leave a slightly bitter taste!

Very rarely comment but it always saddens me when we lose a player and have to pay them off. However, he really hasn't performed anywhere near his potential and although I was very pleased with his signing initially, I am glad to see him move on. It's sods law that he's going to have a great season and bang in a hat full goals but if he'd stayed with us he'd have done nothing. I doubt we'll be getting Ebanks but I would love to be proved wrong as Murphy, McGoldrick, Taylor & Blake would be a nice balanced set of strikers to select from. Whatever happens I think we are stronger now than we were last year....the Sky thing is BS (I'm emailing them after this) I live in Edinburgh and don't get back very often. In Mick We Trust COYB

Good luck to him at Blackpool - you feel they will need every goal he scores for them, because I think they will struggle! However, we move on - no need for any more slagging comments about MC - it is not nice or clever -we should all rise above it. Let's hope we get another striker in quickly!

I too, had a look through the sky televised championship games and was also disappointed that ITFC were not included.

Then I had a think about it remembered the 7-1 drubbing we took at Posh. I watched this with my step son who is a posh supporter. Maybe it is a good omen that ITFC are not on sky!!

re SKY:

I also wrote to them a few weeks ago, being a Devon-based supporter it was annoying we were only on once last season. Their answer? They are contractually obliged to show any Championship team only once at home all season, so we got the Cardiff game. However it's hard not to believe there's not some hidden agenda somewhere. How can they justify showing Leicester City ELEVEN times last season, and us only once? Doesn't the extra money given to LCFC constitute an additional unfair advantage?

"Thanks to all my fans" I'm sure they'll both be very pleased!

His four hour medical scan took so long as it was searching for a conscience! CHEERIO, CHERRIO, CHEERIO!!!

How could we let a great striker go like Michael Chopra? the man is sound, honest, and never put a foot wrong with his stay at Ipswich, he was loved by all the fans. He will certainly be missed or am I looking for another word here.

Agreed he could have been so good here, no doubt he'll score against us he always seems to against former clubs but what will he do in the other 30 odd games after that ??
could have been the best striker here since David Johnson shame but not sad to see him go what a waste

Goodbye Chopra,Cant say its been a pleasure!!

Still feel this may come back to bite us on the bum though. Mr Greedy will milk every last penny he can out of Town which may be the difference between a average striker & a good one signing as the final piece of micks jigsaw !

A rotten apple basicly..Wouldn't bet on him making it in Blackpool either. They took him because they could end with threadbare squad. As for Ebanks-Blake,he's not the striker many seem to think and a broken fibula in April leaves a further question mark on him.. We can get better forwards IF we need now.
