Blues Weighing Up Lee Contract
Friday, 26th Jul 2013 20:22

TWTD understands that boss Mick McCarthy is giving serious consideration to offering former striker Alan Lee a contract for the season ahead. Lee, 34, returned to the club earlier in the summer to begin coaching in the academy, but as reported this morning has been training with the first team this week.

Former Ireland international Lee was released by Championship Huddersfield Town at the end of last season after three years with the Terriers.

The Blues still have four frontline strikers despite having off-loaded Michael Chopra this week — David McGoldrick, Daryl Murphy, Frank Nouble and Paul Taylor — and we understand Lee is viewed as an additional option as cover or as an impact substitute.

The 6ft 2in tall frontman started his career with Aston Villa and spent time on loan with Torquay and Port Vale while with the Villans.

Galway-born Lee subsequently moved on to Burnley, Rotherham and Cardiff before joining the Blues for a fee £100,000 in January 2006. The striker, who is based at Dedham, went on to make 96 starts and 13 sub appearances, scoring 34 goals, prior to moving on to Crystal Palace in August 2008.

While with the Eagles he spent a short spell on loan at Norwich City towards the end of the 2008/09 relegation season.

Meanwhile, former Blues loanee Bilel Mohsni has signed a two-year deal with Rangers, having left Southend at the end of last season.

Interesting! Always gave 100% but probably now past his best. However, if he is here coaching anyway, why not offer him a 1 year deal purely as an emergency backup?

Why not, nothing to lose, plus gives an extra option.

No pleasing some of you idiots on here. The same people moaning last year that our squad is full of old has beens now want Alan Lee to sign for us!! This would be a massive step back for us. Can only imagine how much the scum are laughing at this down the road.

A few years ago i would have said yes ,but his age is a bit high and looking at our squad now he proberly will struggle with it. i think look else where and a age of 26-29ish

It really doesn't make a difference. We sign him and he plays if and only when required. No lose situation.

From that photo it looks as they there might be something else that needs weighing up

No way, look at his fat face....! Was a diving lay about last time... surely not another session after embracing the sick side of yellow town..!

Still a total legend. His goals single handedly kept us up in the last season under Royle. Would love to see him in a Town shirt again, even if only for a few mins here and there.

He realised what a great club this was (well, hopefully still is!) during the Naylor testimonial game. He saw how the fans treated Stewart in that game and I that seemed to change his whole attitude. Be great to have an old face, we've missed that since Wilnis left.

Well if anything he would get some singing going in that old library that once used to be known as Portman Rd.

AND if Burley signed Lee Chapman for his aerial threat then even if Lee has no legs left then Mick will have signed him for the same qualities - and no worse at that!! Sign him up I need a good giggle.

I give a f@ck if he's played for Norwich or what ever he has said in the future. If he was going to return to us, I would support him 100%. But like many others - I don't see the point of this and would rather see us sign a fox in the box.

Love, love Alan Lee. One of my favourite players of our recent dark years, and a fine Joe Royle signing.

Yes please.

Mick must have seen something in training....like now if we have a decent winger or two who can get actually put a decent cross into the box then perhaps Al might just be a bit more capable in the air than Nouble or Murphy in attacking a ball in the box. I don't think the fans are divided over him playing for Norwich most people have hit the nail on the head whilst a small minority just won't grow up - their problem I am afraid, just like every village has its idiot.

Never forget his goal at Elland Road that relegated Leeds and sparked a riot ! Any club coach under 40 that is match fit should be registered as a player just for emergencies anyway, nothing to lose with this at all and hopefully one more time.... Alan Lee Goal !

Would be relatively cheap cover, four strikers not enough get one injury and your light up front, where else will we get a man who knows where the goal is and always tries his best. Good at getting in the face of defenders and can do a job off the bench if needed. Mick not stupid have faith boys have faith

Jimmy86. Four posts all plaastered with minuses, there doesn't appear to be any division within the fan base as you suggest. Where is your mind man? Try putting yourself in his shoes when he ran out for Norwich against us and think of all the booing from hypocrates such as you. If he can still offer us something then let uds all welcome him home.

Perhaps we could also sign Cooper, Burley, Mills, Osman, Butcher, Wark, Muhren, Thyssen, Brazil, Gates & Mariner and start a title challenge ? We could have Mick, Terry and Alan Lee on the bench as cover.

This makes no sense, we have 4 strikers that are clearly better than him. We have a promising young striker in Jack Marriot who can't get a look in and then were talking about signing a 34 year old that was never even that good in his prime. Can't actually believe people think this would be a good addition. Shall we sign Pablo and Kuqi back while were at it?

There's been some downright funny posts on here over the summer but this thread takes the prize for the most silly comments. Why on earth can anyone object to a match-fit coach filling in player-registration forms? Why all this nonsense about "Ooh! As long as he's on a small wage!" "Ooh! He used to play for Norwich". What possible harm can Lee registering as a player do? An infinitely better option in the role than the recently departed Chopra, who I think was to have fulfilled the same covering role this season - and significantly cheaper.

everyone on here complaing he's too old, kevin phillips, aged 40/41 playing and scoring goals, this is the ideal signing for backup and the younger guys can watch him and learn from him not just through him coaching them, the minority of town fans that are slating this are just pathetic and the kind of fans the club doesnt need... grow up and be optimistic about the season ahead

He would definately be an menace AND come in handy against those lower league defences in our cup runs. He may be a journey man, He may be a ex loan scummer but honestly, as stated on here already he will always give 100% in every game and I'm confident that is what us Fans want to see from the players that wear the shirt...

Warwickblue, spot on, and exactly the point I was trying to make. You have to wonder about our fans sometimes....
