Delaney: McCarthy Amongst Potential Contenders
Wednesday, 11th Sep 2013 13:23

FAI chief executive John Delaney has confirmed that Blues boss Mick McCarthy is amongst those likely to come into his organisation’s thoughts as they search for a replacement for Giovanni Trapattoni, who left his job as manager of Ireland by mutual consent this morning.

Speaking to Irish radio station Newstalk, Delaney said: “What we’ll do is take stock of the decision that has arisen today and over the next week or so we’ll discuss the process for the appointment of the new Irish manager.”

Asked whether McCarthy, who was previously in charge of Ireland between 1996 and 2002, ex-Blues boss Roy Keane and others would be in the running, Delaney added: “I don’t think I’ll comment on any individual, but we will have a job description as to who we want to manage the Irish team over the next number of years.

“I think names like Mick McCarthy, Brian McDermott, Chris Hughton, Roy Keane, Martin O’Neill, all of those names would come into the pot.

“I wouldn’t want to comment on any individual person about chances. I know Mick has done a very good job for Ireland in the past, there’s no doubt about that, and he’s done a very good job in England as well.”

Delaney expects lots of potential candidates will come forward: “I think there’ll be plenty of interest because 24 teams go to the next European Championships, that’s a big change so the chances of qualification are a lot higher.

“I think it’s genuinely accepted that we have a good crop of young players available and the monetary incentive towards the role has been good, particularly over the last number of years, and I think the knowledge of the Irish job throughout Europe, through the appointment of Trapattoni, has created an interest in managing the Irish team.

“I think those three of four factors make it an attractive job and it will be interesting over the period to see who puts their best foot forward.”

wouldnt suprise me if he went, done a great job with us last season and received no cash to strengthen the squad from our tight owner, if marcus evans is offered £3 - 4 million compensation to release mick from his contract do you really think he will turn that down??? He wont splash anymore cash on this club and now its all about getting as much of his money back as he can, he wont say no to that amount of money!!! Crowds will be down to 14000 next season.

MM has pretty much indicated in the past that he wants to return to International Management with Ireland - hence why there was a release clause in his contract. If offered he will go and who can blame him? Mick has been excellent for us, but I doubt he would have taken the job if he had have known that he would only have £20k to spend in the Summer. In fact Clegg at the time indicated that he would be backed by ME.

If we lose Mick - all hope has gone. Great manager doing well with an average side.

Why are people seriously thinking Mick would go?
Ireland - average side - no money to spend, bit like Town at the moment,
at least at Ipswich there is more potential for the future.

I always feared this would happen but not so early. Whatever happens we have much to be grateful for, as Mick perfomed a minor miracle in keeping us in the Championship last season. Not many could have asmassed the points he and his players did and if he goes there will be no sour grapes from me, just huge disappointment. We now need a statement from MM or Mr Evans to clarify the position sooner rather than later. If it is to be later, then I fear the worst.

Not just saying this because I want MM to stay at Town but surely Martin O'neill is perfect for this role. He's currently available and has proven in the past that he can create sides that play above their stations. He's made some curious career decisions in the past but I don't think you become a bad manager overnight. If anything his experiences at Sunderland will have made him a better manager, he's the sort of guy intelligent enough to learn from mistakes.

If MM does go, I would take O'Neill here. Him or Burley.

MM could have gone for nothing a month or so ago but I think he is now tied in with the contract and therefore large compensation will need to be paid to the club which is never going to happen. Ray Houghton mentioned Martin O'Neill last Sunday so I think the deal is done bar the formalities

Why would hd go?? You coach your country for pride... Something he has already done...
Lets be honest, he is never realisticly gonna win anything with ireland... St least with town theres a chance...

Please, please, please, FAI make MM an offer he can't refuse so ITFC can become a football team again. Eire can become a hard to beat no hopers, exactly as they were when he was in charge before. My mates in Cork will not be happy how ever, they think he's a prat but they do love RK. Takes all sorts!!

We need some stability not another managerial change with the inevitable change in the players and coaching staff.
Seen some rubbish played at Ipswich in the last few years at least we get some effort now with MM.
face up to the truth itfc can never be the itfc of the RR years best we can hope to be is mid table premier league and you don't get that by swapping managers every week.

After watching that brain-numbing stuff that England laughingly tried to brand as international football the other night in Ukraine I reckon MM is in with more of a shout for the England job...

If MM does go, which I hope doesn't, I would hope Evans would go for some like Karl Robinson from the MK Dons..

Some absolute planks on here hoping Mick will go. Be careful what you wish for, bet half of you haven't been to most of the games so far this season. Some of the comments on here are just bizarre. Also surely Ireland would have known about the clause in Mick's contract and therefore would have approached him beforehand as Trapattoni was always going to go. Just awful reading some of the comments on here after Mick performed a miracle last season.

Unfortunatly i feel Mick may well go, not sure he has the backing he was promised from Mr Evans, fact is to get us into the play offs we need more quality players and you dont get them for peanuts or free transfers.
If he is offered the job and takes it good luck to him and thanks for keeping us up last season top bloke !!!!

I would love Mick to stay, he makes us more stable. Just need to work on being attacking minded as well as defensive. I don't think Ireland would struggle to pay the compensation and Mick has stated that he would return at some point. Who is to say that point is now and again personally i think it suits Martin O'Neil more and all these plastic fans wishing for Mick to go, you probably haven't even been to a game this season or probably since he took over. Mick is the right man for us and if they do come calling and he takes the job, i won't hate him. Im sure he will be thinking about it right now after seeing his name is in consideration but will be focusing on Saturday & Tuesday.

Nothing against the Irish but I hope Roy Keane gets it. The FAI will have to put a clause in his contract to prevent him selling their most promising striker at a knock-down price.

Plus the added bonus of no more of his ITV punditry.
Keane in!

Wow, that's quite a combination of people thinking he'll take the job, which is quite doubtful and people thinking he's do a bad job here which is nonsense. MM has limited resources, which is a result of the club having limited resources not some profit making or penny pinching scheme by ME, and is slowly producing a team which works hard and plays some decent football. We have no money to spend and if we did it would be a bit of an insult to those made redundant in other parts of the club. MM isn't going to Ireland (and by the way Poyet isn't ever coming to Ipswich!).
