McGoldrick Drops Out as McCarthy Makes Three Changes
Wednesday, 1st Jan 2014 14:05

Town boss Mick McCarthy has made three changes to his side for this afternoon’s home game with Charlton. Top scorer David McGoldrick, Frank Nouble and Luke Hyam drop to the bench with Paul Taylor, Paul Anderson and Jay Tabb returning to the XI.

Taylor is making his first Blues league start since September 2012 and only his fourth since signing from Peterborough for an initial £1.5 million a month earlier.

McCarthy, who had fielded the same side in the previous five games, looks set to switch back to 4-4-2 with the Addicks set to employ a similar system.

Town: Gerken, Chambers (c), Berra, Smith, Cresswell, Anderson, Skuse, Tunnicliffe, Tabb, Murphy, Taylor. Subs: Loach, Mings, Edwards, Hyam, Wordsworth, Nouble, McGoldrick.

Charlton: Alnwick; Wiggins, Solly, Wood, Morrison (c), Wilson, Stewart, Cousins, Stephens, Sordell, Kermorgant. Subs: Hamer, Evina, Dervite, Jackson, Church, Pritchard, Cook.

Anyone know why McGoldrick has been dropped? Possibly giving Taylor a much needed run out I'm guessing.

Interesting. I thought, if they are playing 4-4-2, our 4-4-3 would dominate the midfield, but whatever Mick thinks. COYB

McGoldrick is obviously feeling tired! He has been working his socks off remember! We are still good enough to win it without him.

Charlton have played their cards well, dropping Jackson and Church to the bench and playing Cousins and Stephens in the centre. They have undone the selection errors they made against Sheffield Wednesday on Sunday.

They will be a tougher prospect for this, but we still should have too much for them.

We do struggle defending against pacey wide players. Charlton have pacey full backs so I think it's to contain those to!

Deserves a rest, might mean SEB and McGoldrick start together on sturday which would be good to see! Be good to see how Taylor does as well, hopefully see a bit of Wordsworth as well.

Jammo - I don't think we'd be allowed to play with 12 players on the pitch!
