Tottenham Eyeing Cresswell
Thursday, 23rd Jan 2014 09:36

Tottenham are the latest Premier League side reported to be eyeing Blues left-back Aaron Cresswell.

The 24-year-old, who recently signed a new contract until the summer of 2017, has regularly been linked with top flight clubs over the last 18 months with West Brom, Fulham and Southampton frequent visitors to Portman Road this season and Aston Villa having made an enquiry in the summer of 2012.

According to the Daily Mail recently appointed Spurs boss Tim Sherwood is keen to build his squad around a core of British players with a new left-back and striker amongst his priorities. Cresswell, Southampton left-back Luke Shaw and Burnley striker Danny Ings are said to be amongst those being watched.

A fortnight ago, TWTD reported that Tottenham were one of a number of Premier League clubs to have sent a scout to Town’s 1-1 FA Cup draw with Preston.

If Cresswell were to be sold, the Liverpudlian’s former club Tranmere Rovers would be entitled to 20% of the profit Town would make on the £420,000 they paid for him in the summer of 2011.

A Football League tribunal set a compensation figure of an initial £240,000 plus milestone clauses with only a £100,000 payment on promotion to the Premier League not triggered.

Bluey123 is another example of a completely blind 'fan' (I use the term fan loosely here) who has no concept of how how ITFC is run, or needs to be run.

I'll try and put it in simple terms. The debt has gone up this £50m you state BECAUSE Mr Evans has funded that debt.

I don't want to get into calling names, but it's hellishly frustrating when you have to keep explaining to people exactly how much of his own cash Mr Evans has pumped into our club, and for bugger all return unfortunately (not his fault).

When you spend so much, for no return, can you blame him for changing tact and adopting a structured approach, budgeting within FFP, and building the academy for the future? His money isn't endless, and he's not as cash rich as some believe.

I'm grateful.

I think he may end up at Man Utd when they don't buy Baines and as a replacement for Evra. If this happens we can hang on for big bucks as depending on which papers you read he has £163million to spend.

blueblood66, are you not aware that a football club has other costs other than transfer fees and wages for players? As Phil said, that money was almost certainly used to help keep the club going. Phil, I apologise on behalf of some of the people you have to respond to. You probably just want to hit your head against a brick wall sometimes.....

Am I the only one who thinks that since the window opened Cressy has been distinctly average? Since 1st Jan he has been poor by his standards. Clever tactics to keep him do you think? Or is he unsettled by speculation (as much as he says he isn't). Anyway, I'd say take the big money now if its on offer and buy the players we need to move upwards.

at the moment it is only paper talk, but one day he will be sold and I value him at the present time at 3.5mil.Mings is ok but needs a lot more time to improve. The big question is ,IF Cresswell goes in the January window WILL the owner invest whatever we get.I'm not sure under the rules that apply to clubs with big debts.!Having said that we need to get the two young lads back from there loans and stick them in the team NOW.That is the only way they will get the experience and MM can assess them. With regard to players coming in what we need is a good wide player with pace and a quality midfielder with vision, other than that I feel what we have is fine .COYB.

Dirtyboy:-In the last 4years just over £13m has been paid out in interest;but in last year(ended 30/6/13)this has reduced to £707000.
A small proportion of this is to pay Loan Note holders (£115000 30/6/13);but I wonder where the rest went?I think most of us could make an good guess!!!
When Mr Sheepshanks(who I see is leading a company which is re-introducing Dunkin Doughnuts to UK)said to shareholders at the time of takeover that Ipswich wont need to be a selling club any longer.Doesn't look like he was right!!!
It would be nice if Mr Evans would actually say that none of our players are for sale as he is building towards the Premiership.

Good.

I say sell him. Another expensive Jewell flop.

The sooner we get rid of all the deadwood left by that man the better.

Wow - if we get anything over £2m I would be delighted and amazed - but football is a strange old business
Any scout at the PNE match watching Cresswell would have seen a pretty ave display , As someone on here said - he has , by his standards been average in last few weeks - But - he does make alot of good runs without being noticed by our 'midfield' generally looking back not fwd .
I think Mings is more than capable
It does show what a great bit of business that was from Jewell though
Go get Max Power from Tranmere - midfielder with a great name

Wasn't it reported in a previous post on this site that Cresswell signing a new contract included that if we now sold we wouldn't have to pay Tranmere now any money??
I'm sure I read it here, like we bought out Tranmere from the contract?
Or was that another player??

"The debt has gone up this £50m you state BECAUSE Mr Evans has funded that debt."
Because he can offset these losses against Marcus Evans other companies and pay no tax in UK. They are exaggerated like everything in football.

I think it's very generous of Mr Evans to buy the clubs debt for six million as he will only get 30 million back when he leaves the club...........sorry I forgot plus all the other money he has LOANED us.
I think I must have this wrong but if he is adding the interest to the debt rather than making us pay it now , that sounds exceptionally generous.........can't get fairer than that !

Seasider.

I could dissect your figures further if required, but let's not overcomplicate matters. It's bad enough people look at the debt figure and don't see who is funding it.

I do this for a living, and the apparent structure (I say apparent, because i'm not cognisant of all tax systems in place within the group) is set up to optimise the various tax jurisdictions in which it operates. Charging interest to a particular entity from another in a differing tax regime will save a particular rate, in this case, the underlying corporation tax in the UK, whereas the interest bearing company, may not be charged tax on that income at all, or at least at a lower rate.

Given the number of experienced and clever people the MEG have contacts with, the suggestion that the whole group is not set up in a very tax efficient manner is laughable.

ITFC, whilst Evens remains interested, is being run very well indeed for the good of all of his interests.

Cresswell is great championship player.

But Spurs would 100% go for Shaw first. Think this is a long way off.

£5m they can have him. Bearing in mind 25% goes to tranmere. Mick can add players to the squad with the rest.

I think it's becoming fairly obvious he'll be leaving us this year whether it's in this transfer window or over the summer. To me he hasn't been that outstanding this season and the bigger the club that puts in an offer hopefully the more money we'll get.

Personally I think if we do get good money for him, talking £3M plus then it will only do good in the long term for strengthening the right back position and getting in a creative midfielder, but as we know nothing is for certain that if ME receives will he spend out the amount on transfers?

I know I'm wasting my time here but...
If you think you know all this about the finances you must also know that he effectively owes the money to himself and is never getting it back until we are in the prem, if then. What are his motives? Surely he wants us in the prem to sell us if he's this evil vilain using us for financial gain. Simply doesn't add up, but then you probably know that already, just like moaning without wanting to know facts.

I wouldn't take anything less then 5 mil for him. We could bring in 2/3 decent players with this money, depending how much we get from it though....

floridaboy added 16:36 - Jan 23
Cresswell is a decent championship player but is not good enough for the premiership. Luke Shaw is different class and a future England left back. Cresswell is nowhere near as good.

If they offer 3/4 million MM should offer to drive him to the club prepared to pay stupid money!

Another slow news day I see!

If there's nothing much to report on let's do a story based on mere speculation.
