McCarthy: Deal in Progress But No Signing Before Barnsley
Thursday, 6th Feb 2014 14:41

Town boss Mick McCarthy says he’s unlikely to add to his squad before Saturday’s game at Oakwell, but revealed that a potential move is currently ongoing.

McCarthy doesn’t expect to have made a new addition ahead of his return to his hometown club: “Unlikely and even if we got somebody they can’t do anything until Friday. To bring them in and to be playing is unlikely.

“We’ve got one that’s spinning,” he added. “Let’s hope it stays there and doesn’t fall on my head.”

McCarthy, who was typically tight-lipped regarding his target's identity, says he’d like to add another player to his midfield options but isn’t in any panic with the likes of Jay Tabb, Stephen Hunt and Anthony Wordsworth impressing him during last week’s 1-0 victory against Bolton.

“Bearing in mind that we’ve got so many injuries there it would be handy to have somebody, that’s for sure,” he said.

“I hope to get one in, but I’m not unduly worried whether I do or I don’t, to be quite honest, because Tabby and Hunty [were outstanding], and Woody came in and had a good 60 minutes.

“I thought Frazer Richardson was excellent as well. I know he was only on for 10 minutes, he’s capable, so we’re all right. If I get somebody, great, if I don’t, the lads are fine.”

Meanwhile, Leeds manager Brian McDermott says midfielder Paul Green - the player it's believed McCarthy pulled out of signing prior to the closure of the transfer window - could soon be set for a loan move.

From Saturday, Football League clubs are able to sign players on emergency loans of up to 93 days.

EADT reporting the injuries have ruled the signing of Garvan out. But if there is a deal in progress i wonder who it's for..

Imagine if it was a defender! MM would surely be lynched.

With the play off final being on 26 May, i wonder if Mick will leave signing a palyer in on loan until the w/e of 22/23 Feb (otherwise a player will have to go back to his parent compaany before the play offs)

As Owen Garvan had to go off after an hour in the U21 Development game he and TC saw, would be surprised if it was him especially as he hasn't a very good record with injuries.Believe its the knees.
Know the feeling but I am 71!!!

Quit the dithering and bring Garvan home.

Some people will still moan, but I think with Ebanks-Blake, Richardson and a midfield player (whether it's Garvan or not) coming into picture we are getting quite a solid depth in our squad. Whether we make play-offs or not this year, I can see us being even better next season and that's something we should all embrace. COYB!

Hopefully Garvan won't have too many problems with his knees while he is here (if we get him) and I for one will look forward to seeing somebody in our midfield being creative, he hasn't got much to beat in that department.

Why is everyone so anti Green? The chances are the people who are moaning haven't seen much of him at all. People were pretty anti Hunt when he was linked because he wasn't a glamorous signing and people said he was past it. He's now a fan's favourite.

Green is better than Garvan

We know what Hunt could do...effective runner and a player who would take on players, I think it was just his age which a few on here grumbled about.

Then again, Cresswell could excel, attacking from left midfield with Mings as defensive left back cover.

I thought Garvan was carrying an injury? Good if we can get him, he's fit as exactly he type of player we need.

Reports are that Garvan himself says that it was a possibility a few weeks ago, but that he's not coming to Town

Why O Why does every time we are linked to a player does he carry an injury or if green is a target does it stall because their manager was sacked gets his job back.Very frustrating our deals carry so much baggage when other clubs seem to get them done,or is it just me that thinks this.Come on MM get someone who is fit and ready to play and has no injuries, mental problems,or court cases hanging over them.

NoelTheDub - ...that's a fair point - we do seem to attract more than our fair share of 'baggage' type players - worse still, we more often than not accomodate it !!

It cannot possibly be Garvan , let's be realistic.

Just to summarise Mick, please can you bring in a fit player who brings a bit of class to our midfield, has an eye for a pass, has a bit of pace, is not over 30, not injury prone, is not just coming back from injury, is not always ill or has an attitude problem. Are all these possible in a loan? In Mick we trust ;)

keanokeano added 19:45 - Feb 6
Please not Garvan, too much of a liability with his dodgy knees, has no pace and going back to a previous club very rarely works, I would prefer to see Jon Williams from Palace tbh someone with pace would be a plus.

Apparently Garvan has said he won't be joining us.
