Yeovil Pair Linked
Wednesday, 30th Apr 2014 10:37

Town are reported to be showing interest in out-of-contract Yeovil pair Byron Webster and Luke Ayling.

The Glovers, whose relegation back to League One was confirmed last week, are keen to keep hold of the central defender and right-back and manager Gary Johnson has already held talks with the duo and his other out of contract players, but is not yet sure of his budget for 2014/15.

According to the Western Gazette the Blues and Leeds are eyeing 27-year-old Webster, while newly-promoted Brentford and Town have kept tabs on 22-year-old Ayling.

Yorkshireman Webster (pictured above) was with Leeds as a youngster before moving on to York, where he broke into the first team during 2004/05 when the Minstermen were in the Conference.

The 6ft 3in tall defender subsequently spent time playing with Harrogate, Whitby, Czech side FK SIAD Most, Doncaster, Hereford and Northampton before joining Yeovil, where he is currently vice-captain, in 2012. He has now made 94 starts and three sub appearances for the Somerset club, scoring nine goals.

Londoner Ayling was an academy player with Arsenal and joined the Glovers on loan in March 2010 before signing a permanent deal during the following close season. He has made 172 starts and 12 sub appearances for the Glovers, scoring three goals.

As well as being able to operate across the defence, Ayling, who would be subject to a compensation payment should he move on this summer, can play in midfield.

I was saying just yesterday the only player i'd take from Yeovil would be Luke Ayling, he's a natural right back with a good delivery who's also solid defensively. Would slot into our back 4 perfectly.

Agree with Bown that Marek Stech is worth a look too. Improvement on what we current have in goal.

Ayling looks good, don't whether webster is an improvement on what we have got unless mick knows we will struggle to hold onto smith or berra.

I also agree about looking at stech.

Yes on Stech and Ayling. Stech was injured for a while the season and the best defensive performances occurred when he was playing

Oh great, here we go .....3 months of players being 'linked' with Town only never to appear. Phil I beg you go on holiday for 3 months and only log in and tell us when we've actually sold/signed a player. Cheers!
(I am being a little tongue in cheek here, before you all start on me)

Was only thinking the other day that the links would start soon with players from relegated sides. It makes sense though. O 'Grady and Steele at Barnsley might be worth a look as well.

He sounds just the sort of player wer're looking for!
Play him wide on the right along side Hyam Skuse & Cresswell. then Chambers can keep his place, Mings can slot in behind Cresswell, then we'll have a nice solid midfield & a nice tall back four should we get a corner! stick with Nouble & Murphy up front as they can put pressure on the keeper as well at set plays.
I'd like to see a team in the Championship that would be harder to beat than that!!!!!!!!!

All 3 of them would boost our defence.
hope we hang on to Berra. He is signed until End of next season and Smith is under contract until 2016.
There is no need for MM to move them on. Cresswell is almost an inevitable loss and the money gained from that transfer should prove sufficient for any spending for next season.
Hunt is also likely to move on. Nouble is improving but I'd love to see him move on as I can't see what MM sees in him.
Need to invest a fair amount in a creative midfielder. Been needed for sometime now. Skuse and Hyam lack imagination. The difference that lad from Palace made was highly noticeable.
MCgoldrick, Murphy, Ebanks Blake and Marriott might be enough up front for us.
But we undoubtedly need a bigger squad that can rotate more often.
We don't leave the opposition wondering too much about the team they will be facing.
Play-offs should be our aim, and to do that we need to be able to compete with the likes of Reading, Brighton, Cardiff, Blackburn, Notts Forest, Norwich etc next season.
Let's invest and see that top 6 place next year.
Ipswich vs Norwich in the play-off final would be interesting.....

Just a thought, we always seem to raid the relegated clubs for new players. I wonder if Burnley or Leicester are trimming their squads ready for the Premier league?

If Mick's going shopping for out-of-contract players at the relegated Championship clubs (didn't do too badly raiding Bristol City last year), guessing it's only a matter of time before we're linked with Frimpong from Barnsley...

Few other players we should go for , Randolph and burke if brimingham go down and Jennings from Bristol all them players would be happy enough to come to us but will ME cough up

RamboHambo Dale Jennings? He's at Barnsley

Agreed with most on here. Stech and Ayling are both the sorts of players we need. Im hoping the Brum go down as well, as i don't like them. Their squad will be ripe for cherry-picking. Andrew Shinnie would be excellent.

Am I the only person who's happy to keep gerken in goal? Think he's had a decent season!

we have no need for another centre back I wouldn't have thought. A natural right back would be nice, but hoped Hewitt may come back and push Chambers for the spot. If Creswell goes we will definitely be in need of another left back

If we're after a keeper, I wonder whether we might look at someone like Sam Johnstone - 21-yr-old ManU keeper who is currently on loan at Donny Rovers and has been a revelation since coming into the first team, according to my spies. As back up, of course, in the event that Loach goes - and possibly stepping up to put pressure on Gerken.

Luke Ayling would be really good for us. If we're looking for a goalkeeper why not Nick Pope from Charlton, currently on loan at York City, who has kept 15 clean sheets in 21 games in League 2.

If it was any player id go for from Yeovil it would be Joe Edwards, great little box to box midfielder with an eye for a pass

Luke Ayling would be a better alternative to signing Frazer Richardson permanently so that one doesnt sound bad but although I really rate Webster, I dont see the point in him coming in as a fourth choice centre back

Defence wouldn't be where I was trying to strengthen if given limited funds ? Especially as we have two untried young right backs and Chambers who has played there all season .
We need width , pace and creativity in midfield .
Bet MM will go for Zigic from Birmingham would suit the hoof ball ideally
