McCarthy Would Take Williams Back at the Drop of a Hat
Wednesday, 7th May 2014 06:00

Manager Mick McCarthy says he has no idea whether on-loan Crystal Palace man Jonny Williams will return to Portman Road next season, but would take him back “at the drop of a hat”.

Williams, 20, scored once in 11 starts and two sub appearances during a highly successful loan spell with the Blues having joined late in February.

The Wales international recently signed a contract until 2018 at Selhurst Park so a permanent move isn’t on the cards and McCarthy says he doesn’t know whether another loan might be a possibility next summer.

“No idea, I haven’t got a clue,” he said. “I don’t have that discussion. I’ve certainly had that discussion with Jonny, we all love him, we’d all love him back but there would be others who would love to have him as well. That’s just the way it is.

“There might be Premier League clubs that want to take him. Tony Pulis might want to bring him back and put him in his team. Who knows? He’s done himself no harm with everybody, he’s been fabulous.

“So let’s make it public, we’d take him back at the drop of a hat. We’d love to have him back, of course, but that’s not my decision.”

There has been a lot of discussion on here about the type of player Mick likes & wants in his team, most of it centering around Taylor; well lets dispell the notion that Mick hates creativity once & for all now. Jonny Williams has more creativity about him that Paul Taylor has and Mick clearly wants that type of player in his team. Taylor may be more direct, but he is less of a team player, less of a hard worker & it has been suggested that he is less of a positive influence around the club. Those are the elements that Mick doesn't fancy, although the easy or lazy thing to do would be to focus on Taylor's undoubted ability as an attack minded player & suggest that that is what Mick wants rid of.
Jonny Williams is a smashing footballer & it would be great to have him back, in any capacity, for next season. His class & intelligence would be a tremendous weapon for us & I can only imagine how well he could link up with David McGoldrick. We can but hope for the time being.

Len Brennan :- Well said, agree wholeheartedly.

Len, that notion was already b***s*** as he had O'Hara, Jarvis, and Kightly in his squad at Wolves. He likes creative players, but they need steely ones too, and Mick has brought that.

Only slight problem with that, Len, is that Taylor is our player. Williams isn't. Maybe we should work on our own player rather than hope we can borrow someone else's.

Williams is a class act who would have the capacity to win games for us if brought him. I do think he's better attacking from deeper though, saw the Bournemouth match and he looked most dangerous running at players, not onto balls in behind. Williams + Mcgoldrick would be something exciting though :D

Another note, at least the third time McCarthy had spoken so openly about transfer business after Cresswell and Green message, surprising but couldn't care less because in Mick we Trust!

Len, of course, basically every word you have said is right but this is a case of the grass being greener! As somebody else has pointed out Taylor is our player while Williams isn't. During his short time here Williams has been given continuous opportunity to shine and been raved about on every appearance while the exact opposite has been true with Taylor so how do you think Taylor, as a person, feels? When Taylor has put an outstanding performance in he has been immediately dropped and I can remember him being sent home, by train, through, purportably, having toothache. In that case, in all probability, he had spoken to his Manager about being dropped in favour of Nouble (again) and we all know McCarthy's reaction when somebody disagrees with him! Sorry friend, but in my opinion this is very bad man management at work, the cherishing of the few which is why (the favoured) are so bonded and is the reason that a growing number of Town fans want to see the back of him, this in spite of the excellent job he did in keeping us up last year and still not being given a transfer pot which most Managers would expect but football is a team game and in the modern game for team read squad and that is why all people should be treated fairly and equally.

Bill blue. You posted intelligent thoughts there and I genuinely respect your view here. I would argue though that your last few lines could also be interpreted as good man management by many. The Taylor situation was strange. Mm maintains Taylor was simply not his type of player but that they never fell out. The actions as you point out don't entirely support mm's version however. But we don't know what really goes on. There is a faint implication Taylor was a disruptive type. If so after Bullard copra et al he could be the last of the bad apples jewel collected. In which case again maybe this is good man management.

Billblue I think you will find a growing number of town fans want to see him given a new contract. What a load of nonsense that was.

At what point due the deluded Town fans stop singing Taylor's praises and get real?

BillBlue added 10:22 - May 7
Yes Jimmy to a point I agree with you too and can understand why you could point to the latter part of my post as relating to good man management which, in the eyes of the favoured ones (the few) it would be. However, I think you will agree that management encompasses all people under your control and the point you quote, re McCarthy's opinion of Taylor, surely supports my preposition? From the very start Taylor was badly treated but IMO if he had been given an honest opportunity to show himself he would have responded and that would have been a big feather in Mick's cap. Every single one of us is different and we all respond to different approaches but, again IMO, Mick wants all people to be the same and that is not possible, sorry!

Popeye - Two things: Please point out anyone who has been "singing Taylor's praises" and, without checking a dictionary give me a definition of "real". Thanks.

Ive said for a long while I could see CResswell going to Palace and Williams coming here as aprt of the deal. I see nothing to change this personal view yet either. However at the least I would not be surpised to see Willaims here on a seaosn long loan.

The problem for me is there are very few Joniestas about who are willing to play at this level and that we could get. I understand Mick wants steel in all 11 positions and the likes of Taylor and JET don't give us that. However, for many other sides at this level it is about balance and having a good blend. We will struggle to get steel and creativity in one package, so why can't we have 9 steel players and 2 creative ones?

I accept that a platform has been built by favouring hard work, however, surely we could accommodate the likes of Taylor without compromising our approach too severely. I would expect a manager of Mick's experience to be able to iron out any short-comings a "luxury" player or two would bring through effective coaching.

I love that he is taking action, getting rid of loach and Taylor, not just signing the loan players who I don't think have done badly, but they aren't going to win you promotion. I know what people are saying about Taylor but however skilful a player is, you can tell his attitude is terrible and that is not what you want in a team. I think he is now going to look for the attack minded players with a blend of hard working players. Would love to see Williams back, I think he will make early signings, get them organised and go for it next season, and with the team we had this season and came so close, next season could be a really good one!

'I'd take Williams back at the drop of a hat' - but it's not going to happen so move on.
Re: Taylor - treated fairly? as regards to a run of games, No, but as mentioned we really don't know what goes on behind the scenes or on the training field.

I think mm and tc have done a great job so far and am really hoping to see some good signings b4 start of season some creative mids would be nice, next season I hope can be ours with good additions from money we get from the sale of taylor and sadly Cresswell, although I'd love it if cressie stayed but football as sadly is a business and sometimes players have or need to be sold to bring new ones. Come on mr evans sort out mick a new contract please. COYB

Len the biggest point I think you are missing is not that fans are saying MM hates creative players it is the fact he only seems to be able to accomadate 1 in the team at a time ?
Would Williams have been brought in if Dids was fit , probably not ?
Big target man has to play up top , 2 defensive minded central midfielders , and 2 wingers who have to tuck in and defend as their first option leaving one position behind the target man for some creative flair , your point of how would Dids and Williams have played together wouldn't have happened .
Why couldn't he have played Taylor and Williams ? Oh yeah because Nouble is bigger and better at defending set pieces .
People shouldn't be comparing Taylor and Williams , they should be answering why Nouble got so many starts above Taylor before Williams was even at the club ?
