Town Set For Gillingham Trip
Wednesday, 7th May 2014 12:45

Town are set to play Gillingham in a friendly at the Priestfield Stadium during pre-season. The game is expected to be played on Saturday 26th July but is yet to be confirmed.

Gills boss Peter Taylor, who has signed a two-year contract with the League One club, told the Kent Messenger: “I imagine Elliott Hewitt [who has been on loan at Gillingham] will be playing and I think Ipswich is a really good friendly. I know they played them last year but to play Ipswich, it’s a good game.”

Last summer goals from David McGoldrick and David October saw the Blues to a 2-1 victory with ex-Canary Cody McDonald netting for the home side.

Town start their pre-season fixtures with a game against Shelbourne at Tolka Park, Dublin on Saturday 12th July, while they travel to Colchester United on Wednesday 23rd July.

Any chance of playing west ham ? Will get the players spirits high for start of the season when we thrash them??

No disrespect to the teams we've already got pre season games against but they hardly get the blood rushing do they? If next year is our year and fingers crossed it is then surely we could do with some more testing teams. Win against either col up and gillingham and people will be saying we should beat those teams but lord only knows what the posts would be if we were to lose!! Yes rambohambo west ham would be a good test along with the likes of Southampton/west brom and the like.

So that's Gillingham, Colchester and Shelbourne...

Hmm. Well that can't be the full pre-season programme yet. It hasn't got Southend, Bury Town and Needham Market in it. Or the Spurs U18s...

Are we just going for the same pre-season as last year?

Doesn't show that Ipswich and particularly MM is very bothered about pre-season friendlies. This confirms what Mick has said himself in the past.
Said recently that only thing he is really looking forward to now is his holidays(quite right)and all the other stuff ie transfers can wait until he gets back as doesn't want the club to be paying wages unnecessaryily for the next 3 months. His words not mine

Well, not as much fun as Holland, but Mick seems to prefer more local venues, so I 'll just have to put up with it.

I presume Notts County away and West Ham, as well as Chippenham will be there soon! Seriously though, I think that a good mix of League One and Prem teams will be good for Town. Main thing is that they get into shape though

Good friendly, Gillingham are a decent side, like Colchester. It will be a good test but nobody should read too much into pre season games. It's good the Gillingham game is on a Saturday though, think last week it was a week night so this year more should be able to go.
