McCarthy Confirms Cresswell Interest
Tuesday, 1st Jul 2014 06:00

Boss Mick McCarthy has confirmed that there has been interest in left-back Aaron Cresswell but remained tight-lipped on whether the Blues have received any firm bids. Southampton, West Brom and a host of other Premier League sides kept tabs on the 24-year-old last season and have continued to be linked during the summer.

“There’s interest,” McCarthy admitted. “If there had been any bids I wouldn’t tell you. But I can’t deny there’s interest in him and there’s always going to be interest because he’s a good player.

“I said all last season that there may come a time when we can’t do anything about it because he may feel he’s done his time here and he wants to move on and better himself.

“If that’s the case and the deal is right, then it becomes an irresistible force. Well, you can stop it because he’s under contract but if you’ve got a bid for a player that everyone seems to think is fair and he wants to move on it’s a difficult one to stop. But if there ever is a bid it’ll have to be the right one.”

He added: “I said last season, and my stance hasn’t changed, Cressy got all the plaudits for being the best left-back in the league and if at some stage somebody comes in and the deal’s right, it becomes untenable because [in those circumstances] the player wants to go. It’s not that we want to sell him but I might be able to reinvest if that’s the case.

“I don’t want to sell him but he himself is really ambitious and if the right deal comes along, who knows, it may have to happen.

“And if it does, I’ll shake his hand, thank him for all that he’s done and I’ll crack on and get somebody else. That’s the way it happens.”

If Cresswell, who is contracted to Town until the summer of 2017, were to move on this summer his former club Tranmere Rovers would be entitled to 20 per cent of the profit the Blues would make on the £420,000 they paid for him following his summer 2011 switch to Portman Road.

A Football League tribunal set a compensation figure of an initial £240,000 plus milestone clauses, with only a £100,000 payment on promotion to the Premier League not triggered.

Looks like he'll leave. A shame that Ridgewell signed for Portland Timbers as he would have been a perfect replacement, but its definitely a chance that Mings will make the lb-position his. We'll see

I think it is a shame we are going to sell but an essential if we are to even have a chance of competing with the parachute payments, which should only be for wages not transfer fees. We have Wyatt and Mings at LB so should be sorted there. Probably need 1 keeper, 1 defender, 2 wingers, 1 central midfielder and 1 forward.
If it is Saints who buy, we could try for £4 million as they have a lot in the bank after the sale of Shaw. If its WBA then maybe 3.
Its looking likely he will leave and I think he will be a success in the PL although maybe we could have a loan deal? Unlikely but worth a punt to try on Left wing?

It's a shame because he is the best left back in the league but mings seems good enough even though he may have a mistake in him from inexperience. If shaw is worth £30 million then Cressy must be worth at least £7 million? Which would be a good amount to reinvest in the team.

This is becoming boring.

I'm getting really fed up with Ipswich's hard sell and advertising of Cresswell, it stinks of desperation and will certainly not increase his value, it could have an adverse result. Why not come out and say he's the type of player we want to build the team around to progress to where we want to get.
If Cresswell was a car and was for sale and you knew the seller had to sell, you would get a bargain.

Good vg player shame if he does go but fink we need the money to invest in other areas, plus think mings could do good job. Wish if he does go it's done asap so so we can do what we can do for season ahead. If he does go I hope to Southampton

I agree with Mick. Cresswell has served us well and if there is a chance of joining a premier league club, and the deal is right for us, we shouldn't stand in his way. If he leaves, I too would wish him well.

Even with Mings we would have to sign a leftback as cover. I don't think it's a question of if he leaves but one of what happens to the money we get for him?

If you believe the vibes that come out of the training environment and the Stowmarket fraternity in the know Creswell is more than happy to stay here hence a transfer may not be as simple as it would appear. On the other hand a step up is hard to turn down with all the financial rewards that go with it. Cressy will probably go eventually I just hope we get the right price and Mick can use the treasure chest for new players only.

I'm not fussed if we sell him I just hope we make some decent money for him!

If he were to leave I can't imagine he would want to join West Brom. They must be the favourites for relegation next season. Poor manager, very average squad and lucky to survive last year. I imagine Cresswell would want to join a bigger team or stay and fight for promotion here. Nevertheless hope we get a decent fee if he does leave and invest in a decent attacking midfielder

Southampton are awash with money and can afford to pay a silly price for him. We should push them for every penny if he is to go there.

McCarthy can't wait to get him out the door and get some sort of kitty towards other players (maybe). The sooner he's gone the better as it's getting a bit tedious.
