Bajner "Undergoing Medical"
Wednesday, 30th Jul 2014 17:52

On-trial striker Balint Bajner is undergoing a medical at Town this evening with his signing set to be announced tomorrow, according to Hungarian reports.

The 23-year-old former Borussia Dortmund B team regular has been with the Blues for more than a week and, according to Nemzetisport, has been successful in his attempt to win a contract at Portman Road.

The 6ft 5in tall frontman, who scored in last night’s 2-1 friendly victory at Southend, is said to be set for a medical and is discussing personal terms, believed to be a two-year deal.

Szombathely-born Bajner played youth football with hometown club Haladás and then FC Sopron in Austria, where he first broke through into senior football.

He joined Romanian club Liberty Oradea in 2007, moving to West Ham on loan for the 2008/09 season, where he featured for their U18s and reserves. However, the Hammers opted not to take up an option to sign him on a permanent basis the following summer.

Bajner, who has been capped by Hungary at U19 level, joined Honved back in Hungary in 2009, then moved on to Italian lower division side ASD Sulmona Calcio in 2011. After a short spell at Hungarian club Bodajk FC Siófok he joined Dortmund in the summer of 2012.

His one substitute appearance for their first team came last season with the rest of his football having been played with their B team in the third tier of German football. While with Dortmund B he scored nine goals and recorded five assists in 52 games.

Bajner came on as a sub in Town's friendly at Colchester and started the game at Gillingham on Saturday before coming off the bench to net in last night’s match at Roots Hall.

Afterwards manager Mick McCarthy said he had been impressed with the striker both against the Shrimpers and throughout his time at the club: “I thought he did well. He’s done well in every game, I feel.

“I’m really pleased with him. He’s only 23 and I think he’s got improvement in him. We’ll see, he’s done OK. We’ll continue to monitor him, definitely.”

Town also have French-Mauritian midfielder Kevin Bru on trial, who has also caught McCarthy’s eye: “Kevin’s done fine, I’ve been delighted with him.

"He’s a really good player, I think. The game the other day was only his second game in the last three or four months, so he was feeling a bit shattered.

“I wanted to get Teddy Bishop on, that’s why I took him off. Kevin’s done really well, I’m very pleased with him.”

Don't mean to sound too negative, but 9 goals in 52 games in the German 3rd division doesn't sound like much to get excited about.

Delighted. Seems to be a quality player. All of you saying "he must be good because he was at Dortmund.." well, Veseli was at both United and City, Lee Martin was at Man utd, etc etc...

Wow a player not good enough to get in the Hungary side above Priskin, will suit our style of play though , front three of him , Murphy and Noble, guess the tactic. MM said the same words about Nouble when he signed over a year later I am waiting to see what Mick sees?

Hes a big target man there to fkick on crosses, set pieces and yes the inevitable long balls, but I do agree we certainty look like we have more atracking intent and certainly more width. Likely to push Nouble down the order perhaps?

My 1st fit eleven

Bartman
Chambo berra smith parr
Stewart Hyam Skuse Henshall
MCG Murph

subs gerkin, mings, Hewitt, Anderson, Banjit, Taylor, Marriot

not actually sure how many subs you can name

but that leaves WW, Nouble, Hunt, a d Tabb fighting to make the matchday squad let alone a start. Plus I would expect 2 loans and we have Lawrence, Bishoo, Mqueen and Wyatt all on the fringes and hopefully progressing, its not that shabby is it? Big Frank and Marriot could be big impact players this year. Thats could......

I've missed something, obviously. Bajner was simply awful at Gillingham, 6 ft 5 ins of striker who couldn't win a header against lower half League 2 defenders. I agree with runaround, another Sam Parkin, I'd rather have Jon Stead back.
As for attacking & goalscoring midfielders, why isn't MM looking at Darren Ambrose? Out of contract at Brum, bags of Prem experience, he'd have a point to prove with us.

Yes brilliant signing!! 6 good strikers to choose from now or does that mean Taylor is on his way if an offer comes in.

With respect he may turn out to be a good player. But how far we have fallen as a club.

Looks a reasonable centre forward & will no doubt get a few goals for us, but I don't really see the need for this type of striker. Mick likes both Murphy & Nouble so we'll have 3 big uns in a match day squad, with little variety available when chasing a game. Marriott & Taylor might offer a different, quicker & trickier option alongside McGoldrick, but neither are likely to get much match time; or any match time at all in Taylor's case possibly. I was hoping we'd add a 'finisher' type striker instead.
As I say, he looks like he is a decent player, & good luck to him, but bringing on the (another) big man is going to be the story of our season.
On the plus side, they should receive some quality balls in from our new attacking wingers.

Can't see for the life of me how this is a good signing. I have not seen the lad play, but his credentials from Germany league3 are hardly awe inspiring. Once the pre-season euphoria wears off I think some serious questions will be raised about the strengthening of the squad following the departure of Cresswell.

........... here we go again - supporters again all too ready to claim that because WE have signed someone from The German 3rd Division (9 Goals / 52 Games) - they miraculously become WORLD CLASS.

Cannot believe how orgasmic some become when we sign a player - whoever it may be, and regardless of record / history.

I dont see how anyone can form a judgement like muccletonjoe when he hasn't seen him play;but a least he is onest enough to say so.

.......... but the essential requisite is : He's a FREEBIE - far more important than having the credentials to show he is up to the task.

Seasider ............. I sincerely hope he proves to be the 'signing of the Championship season' - however he has to step up several levels very quickly to be able to do the job in hand for us.

Not exactly coming here with much of a record - which cannot be overlooked.

At some point we have to import some pedigree from somewhere - and SPEND SOME MONEY - otherwise it doesn't bode well for the future however optimistic people want to be.

Well he's obviously held his own in training against the best defence in the world, mm has obviously seen something in him, so good luck to the lad, he's on a free probably on low wages, if he turns out to be a Nikolai Zigic then you say hey ho he was a free at the end of the day or he could turn out to be an Edin Dzeko. We shall wait and see, that's if he gets a game.

So,

Goalkeeper - we have signed a Polish never been - while Brighton, a far poorer team then us sign Stockdate, and English keeper from the Premiership.

Midfield - we are probably going to sign Iron Bru, who is a Mauritian International. I dont even know where Mauritius is, and bet most fans couldnt point it out on a map. While a team in the same division as us has a World Cup Semi finalist in their midfield.

And now, a striker, who couldnt cut it in the German 3rd division.

And you sheep are happy, because Mick says so.

This club has become a joke.

Sorry for bad spelling on the above post. A pint too many tonight perhaps.
Mark my words though, if this poor player is to replace Taylor, then the first home game will be Micks last, Fans have had enough.

"Always rely on a team, not individuals," (Forbes.com, 08/05/2010). Further, "When considering moving a star performer onto your team, bear in mind that star performance doesn't easily transfer." There are more perceptive observations on the importance of teamwork vs individual effort in the article, if you are interested. MM is obviously of the opinion that overall team harmony is far more important than individual brilliance, and when you see that PL teams coming down don't always cut it in the Championship, you have to agree he has a point. Ideally though, shouldn't we be looking for individual brilliance combined with team ethic? Despite being pretty happy with MM's team building so far, I am still missing that extra spark of individuality to pull a result out of the bag when games are stagnating. But then I forgot - that probably costs money... Maybe a loan, then? Oh well, whatever. COYB!
