McCarthy Wants More Than Goals From Marriott
Tuesday, 19th Aug 2014 06:00

Town boss Mick McCarthy says he wants striker Jack Marriott to be more than just an out and out goalscorer. Yesterday, the 19-year-old joined League Two Carlisle on loan for a month,

“Jack wants to play,” McCarthy said. “He loved his time out at Woking last year, just playing. Whether there’s 500 fans, 5,000 or 50,000 there, if they’re all singing your name because you’re the goalscorer, it’s a nice feeling. Well, I think it is, I never had it!”

Marriott scored 13 goals in 23 starts during two spells in the Conference with the Cards last season with a short stint at League One Gillingham, in which he appeared only once as a brief sub, sandwiched in between.

McCarthy believes the striker is up making the step up to League Two football: “He’s capable of playing at that level and if he gets chances, he’ll score.

“We tell him that you can’t just be a goalscorer. I’ll explain that. David McGoldrick didn’t score for 11 games last year but I never considered leaving him out because he did all the other stuff.

“He held it up, he ran in channels, he came back and defended, it stuck when it went up to him and he set things up for other players.

“He was an all-round player and it wasn’t just goals that he got. And he got back to scoring goals and he was terrific.

“So, that’s what we’re saying to Jack, be the goalscorer but look at Luis Suarez, he scored all the goals but didn’t he work and do everything else?

“There are other sides to it and he’s getting there, I think he’s done well. He didn’t play at Gillingham just because of circumstances with the team, but hopefully he’ll get games at Carlisle and he’ll score some goals.”

Could the initial spell be extended? “If he does well Kav [Carlisle boss Graham Kavanagh] will want to keep him.

"If he does well and we’re not doing well and we haven’t scored goals, I’ll probably want to bring him back. But let’s see what the month brings. There’s no agenda, no plan on that at all.”

I'm afraid already this season, mick seems to have an attitude of defend, defend, defend, with perhaps the odd attack thrown in. Looks like attackers now need to play as defenders, whilst I'm not sure I have seen a more negative, defensive midfield since I have been supporting Town (30 years).

Every manager falls of his sword eventually and I would love Mick to achieve something before he does. However, his attitude shown towards players that may actually provide a bit of entertainment to the long suffering fans may just be the beginning of the end.

boring boring mick mcarthy
why not just go 10-0-0 formation and be done with it. i suppose next he will make marriot shadow tabby in training.
if he scores 20-30 a season that a strikers duty fulfilled.
proves micks commitment to the long ball game in unwaivering when the qualitys required are to run the channels and hold the ball up

Hi, Woking fan here. Jack was excellent last season for us - apart from the goals he scored, he also created opportunities for others and worked hard, closing down defenders and tracking back. So in that sense, I'm not sure what your manager is on about. However, I would say that Jack punished the weaker teams in our league, when he was invariably given time and space. Against the stronger, full-time Conference clubs, he didn't show up at all and struggled to get into the game. And of course, he also didn't do enough to get even a place in the starting line-up when on a month's loan at Gillingham. It will be interesting to see how he gets on at Carlisle, but at the moment, I would say he's a long, long way from being a Championship level striker. League Two/Conference is probably the right level for him at present. Anyway, I hope he does well, he's a smashing lad, and he was a credit to his club and his parents when he was with us.

when Marriott went to woking last season , I said that you play to the level you are in , if he had been put into our side he would be a lot further forward now , the question is can we afford to play an inexperienced striker, if he had been given the same opportunities as nouble I think it would have made a difference.

in mm we trust but funny old time to realise that we don't need nouble or marriot. seems we've basically got about 11 first team players and we're going to loan our way through the season. hope MM can pull it off COYB

Marriott will never get anywhere at Ipswich while MM relives his Barnsley days
