McCarthy Delighted to Keep Duo
Tuesday, 2nd Sep 2014 12:38

Boss Mick McCarthy is delighted that David McGoldrick and Tyrone Mings were still Town players as the transfer window closed last night, having been targeted by Premier League Leicester City and Crystal Palace.

“The transfer window passed with a whimper didn't it, after it looked like it could be a busy day,” McCarthy said in a longer interview with Ipswich Player.

The Town boss admitted that he thought it was likely that McGoldrick would move on with the Foxes having had what is understood to have been a £6.5 million offer turned down last week and then a subsequent bid believed to have been £7 million rebuffed yesterday.

Although not commenting on specific figures, the Blues have confirmed that the offer, if it had been accepted, would have been second biggest incoming fee in the club's history.

Connor Wickham was sold to Sunderland for an initial £8.1 million in the summer of 2011, while Kieron Dyer joined Newcastle for a fee which eventually rose to £6.5 million in the summer of 1999. Reports that the Blues were asking £11 million for McGoldrick yesterday are understood to be wide of the mark.

“I thought Didz might be on his way to Leicester,” he added. “I said that on Saturday but [owner] Marcus [Evans] didn’t ever want it to happen. He turned down a substantial amount of money and the deal fell through.

“Obviously I’m delighted that Didz is staying. I’ve got a player that I thought I might be without so it’s a good ‘signing’ for us in the window!”

Crystal Palace, who were also linked with a move for McGoldrick, made a £2.5 million offer for 21-year-old left-back Tyrone Mings, which was also rejected.

“I spoke to Neil Warnock,“ McCarthy continued. “He asked about Tyrone and I told him what a good player he is and that I didn’t want to lose him.

“That didn’t deter their interest. It often doesn’t in football and they made a substantial bid for him.

“Marcus deals with the finances and he didn’t want to lose him either so he’s still with us and I’m delighted with that because he’s a good player.”

It’s understood that the possibility of Jonny Williams returning to the Blues on loan was mooted as potentially being part of a proposed offer for Mings. The Wales international may well be close to the top of McCarthy’s loan wish-list when Football League clubs are able to sign players on ‘emergency’ loans from September 9th.

Meanwhile, Town’s U21s, who drew 1-1 with Sheffield Wednesday last night, will play a behind closed doors friendly at West Ham on Thursday afternoon.

Full credit to ME for turning down a substantial amount of money for McGoldrick. As for Mings, well, wow ... 2.5 M is a staggering amount of money for him, so not sure if it is wise to turn that down!

Still disappointed that we didn't sign anyone on a half season loan. Just my opinion though. Player could have been here, training and getting used to the squad and available until January. Now, we have a situation where a player either won't join until October or muss critical Christmas games. Shame.

2 Sky Sports games - 2 reasonable performances and all of a sudden you worth £2.5M!! - the crazy crazy world of football and the Premier League. Who would have thought that last season.

Pleased that both players are staying put as they are two players of genuine quality. Those wanting rid of Mings and describing him as average obviously didn't see Cresswell when he arrived. For me Mings will far exceed Cresswell in ability and value after a season in the Championship.

Whilst I'm glad mcgoldrick and mings stayed, I'm
Thinking if we can turn bids that high down
How comes we can't invest some money to
Add a proven striker and attacking midfielder?
We do have a really small squad so it would
Have been a massive blow to lose two more
Of our players, especially mcgoldrick. I know
Mick has said we are looking at the loan market
To add to the squad, but surely permanent
Signings are better? Just seems odd that we
Have a massive debt as a club, we haven't been
Spending any money on actual transfer fees for
Players but turn down silly money offers like this?
Anyway glad they stayed so should stop moaning
I guess! Lol coyb

............ much conjecture on what was actually offered, refused, declined or whatever - some, all, or more likely none of it correct.

Good that both players are still here - shame we didn't actually add to the squad at this point.

I am glad this is all over . When I heard about mcgoldrick being wanted by Leicester here we go another player gone I am glad he has stayed and I can't believe that mings is worth 2.5 million pounds. I would wonder what the squad of 81 or 2000 would be worth

blue86. the reason we cant afford to invest in a proven striker and midfielder is because we rejected these bids. its as simple as that. if we are going to pay out for players that will cost a substantial transfer fee, we will have to sell 1st. why. well, some on here wont like me saying it, but its because, regardless of whether the fans think we should be or not, we are adhering to the ffp. as are most, tho not all teams in this division.

Blues1, fair point about adhering to FFP.
Be interesting to see what sanctions are
Put on the teams that don't listen to the
Rules? Only time will tell I guess.

Delighted both are staying but equally disappointed that after off loading some 1 st team squad players and thinning our squad thread bare and along with the Aaron Cresswell money that was supposed to be being made available we didn't strengthen at all, standing still wont get us promoted and further in the cups

People who do not see mings potential amuse me. This boy has scope beyond any Ipswich player, cresswell included, I have seen for years. He covers ground pkeca gazelle and is so powerful. Without these, you need skill like messi. With these, you can become a top player anyhow.

I think MM is showing great faith in the likes of young Teddy Bishop by not rushing to plug gaps in the squad. If pre-season has shown us anything it is that we have some very useful players coming through. However, I've seen some of the moaners suggesting these raw young lads should be put straight in to the starting 11 (purely as a stick to beat MM with) and I disagree with that. Timing is crucial to allow these players develop naturally without the pressure of expectation in big league games.

Wouldn't say the "moaners" as you call them are using it as a stick to beat MM with bohslegend, they just have a different opinion to yours. MM is doing a great job with what he has available, that is without question. If players like Bishop, Henshall and Bru played well against derby and improved what clearly is a workman like, but very pedestrian midfield, which you cant deny, even with the most rose tinted specs on, then theybdeserve their chance in the team. Remember the adage if you're good enough, you're old enough!!

After the Derby result, I honestly think we are looking ok for the rest of the season. A top 6 place is still not beyond us.

Mings, Chambers, Berra, Smith, Bishop, Henshall, MCgoldrick, Murphy, Anderson are all playing well.

We have a few other potential youngsters coming through and Ambrose was superb for the U21's the other night.

Even Bru had a good full debut.

Could do with 2 signings in the loan window (at least one being a midfielder) and we should be fine.

3-0 against Millwall and onwards and upwards. Just hope we don't go back to hoof ball again...it's not working.
