Mings Signs New Deal
Saturday, 20th Sep 2014 14:28

Left-back Tyrone Mings has signed a new contract until June 2017. The 21-year-old was offered the new terms after the Blues turned down Crystal Palace's £3 million deadline day offer.

“We’ve been delighted with the progress Ty has made and his contract is reward for getting in the team and doing well,” manager Mick McCarthy told the club site.

“Palace did make a big offer for him but we want him here long term. I want to keep our young, exciting players and Ty is one of them.”

Mings, whose previous contract ran until the summer of 2015 plus an option for a further year, joined the Blues from non-league Chippenham for £10,000 in December 2012 and has now made 13 starts and 13 sub appearances.

Well deserved. Hope those who judged Tyrone too early are enjoying their humble pie. His potential was there for all to see right from that first game at Reading.

Very reassuring. The lad is impressing so far this season and strikes me as a good character, but he needs his feet keeping on the ground. Some more time to develop properly in the Championship is just what the doctor ordered.

No guesses who everyone will want next in the new deal carousel...

The option in his previous contract really gave him no choice. These options are very powerful negotiating tools. It means the player has no security but cannot leave - they are almost forced to re-sign. Brilliant business.

This is great business as far as I am concerned. The lad has looked a different class to where he was at last season and is currently playing very well. It shouldn't be forgotten he was playing non-league football less than 2 years ago and the Championship is a big step up. The fact Palace were prepared to offer a couple of million for him shows he has what it takes.
I am also please to see the club getting contracts sorted out on the important players early and not as Clegg used to do leaving it until it is too late.
I would also like to say it has been pleasing to watch the team playing football on the ground and being patient - I have been MM's biggest critic over the hoof ball tactics but fair play - this is much better to watch and the results have been pleasing too

Has the potential to be the best ever ITFC left back. Could also go on to play for England but needs to continue to put in above average performances week in week out. That's a big ask for someone so young. I have confidence Tyrone can do it and keep his feet on the ground. He only has to look at how some youngsters press the self destruct button when they think everybody worships them. Well done so far and good luck for the future, hopefully a long and successful one.

It is amazing and amusing to think that Mings (left back) crossed the ball over for Parr (right back) to score the first goal against Brighton !!!!!!

Great news that - a real star in the making - would have been even better to have got him on a 5 year one.

He should have a chat with Adam Tanner about going off the rails and wasting a promising career.

re SouperJim - I think you're rewriting history a bit there. He wasn't great from the off, but his improvement has been meteoric. Well done to all involved (himself, Mick and TC, his parents probably).

Seems like a top bloke as well, giving away free tickets, shirts and feeding the homeless at Christmas etc.

Well mentioned Dolly. I wondered if anyone would remember that about him as well as his footy ability. ITFC need to nurture him well. Could be a massive asstet in more way's than one for Town.

After a couple of nervous games he's come good this season. It's still a huge learning curve. I don't remember anyone really calling for Mick to get rid of him just to bring in a more confident player. However sticking with him has been what worked best and he's come good.

Cloddyseedbeed. He will be some player if he becomes the best ever Town LB bearing in mind that Mick Mills and Kevin Beattie occupied that position with aplomb!

Yep good news - deserves it after the start to this season.

Beattie was a central defender?, although no doubt did played at LB now and again, and would be going it to beat Mills - he was a real solid professional!

I watched him a few times at Chippenham(12 miles from me) and you could see the raw potential he had, but he needed a strong hand to guide him to fulfil it and I firmly believe he has that with MM as I have said on here before he reminds me of Kevin Beattie when he first played(started at left back) and with added strength and experience will be immense for us.
