Murphy Wins Cap as Sub
Saturday, 11th Oct 2014 19:41

Blues striker Daryl Murphy came on as a 63rd minute sub as the Republic of Ireland thrashed Gibraltar 7-0 at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin.

Murphy, who was winning his 13th cap, proved a threat from corners and wasn’t far away from netting his first international goal, twice heading wide and once into the Gibraltarian keeper’s arms.

Earlier, Robbie Keane completed a hat-trick within the first 18 minutes, with James McClean (2), Wes Hoolahan and an own goal completing the scoring.

Elsewhere, Town defender Christophe Berra was left out of the matchday squad as Scotland beat Georgia 1-0 at Ibrox.

Ireland face Germany in Gelsenkirchen in their next qualifier on Tuesday when Scotland take on Poland in Warsaw. Jonny Williams's Wales side are up against Cyprus in Cardiff on Monday.

Domestically, on-loan right-back Elliott Hewitt made his league debut for Colchester as the U's beat Fleetwood 2-1 at the Weston Homes Community Stadium.

Jack Marriott played the first 77 minutes but wasn't on the scoresheet as Woking won 3-0 away against 10-man Altrincham in the Vanarama Conference.

Anthony Wordsworth and Paul Taylor's loan club Rotherham weren't in action, while Frank Nouble, who is currently with Coventry, and Freddie Veseli, who is with Port Vale, are still sidelined with groin and rib injuries respectively.

Scotland obviously haven't been watching much of Berra if they thought leaving him out of the squad was a good idea?

How can Murphy only be a sub for that shower?

What a stupid comment paulblue62.

We have a striker who has scored 65 international goals and still scoring, Murph has only recently been brought back into the fold and I think he can expect more games over time, but your ignorant comment shows little knowledge of international football.

For the record I was there this evening. Gibraltar were far worse than the score line suggests. It was like playing a Sunday league team.. Some of them didn't even look like footballers at all.
Murph came on with plenty of time, but despite a couple of decent touches in an around the box he never looked like scoring himself. I do hope that he can push ahead of Shane Long and Kevin Doyle for first striker sub selection. Germany away on Tuesday. Would be great for murph if he got another 20+ mins on the pitch.

Robbie Keane hattrick and now all time top goal scorer in European qualification.
Murphy also got a special mention after the game from Martin O Neill so he is highly rated and seems to be just behind Keane in the main striker role.

Hoolahan played behind Keane today to great effect. Hoolahan may not be in the game plan for Germany, I can see Murphy getting on, if not starting against Germany.
Long diddnt play today, not sure if he is under wraps for Tuesday or is behind Murphs. Will be intereting to see what happens against the Germans!

I would have thought that they would have played 3 up front against such a bad side. That is why I would have thought he would have started. I know a bit about International football, so to call me ignorant is stupid on your part.

bohslegend, your post started what a stupid comment..... Nice.,
Then reading further on you wrote Gibraltar team looked like a Sunday side, well yep with only two or three that actually earn a living from football, then yes, they are a Sunday side, WHAT A STUPID COMMENT.
As for the game, Murphy did ok when he came on, I suppose, but I'm just glad he left the park unscathed.

Suffolkpunch -touchy?
Paulblue started the thread with murphy not getting a start with "that shower" forgetting that murphy is one of "that shower". I pointed out that this was stupid because he first of all missed that particular point and secondly that that shower have the all-time UEFA leading international scorer in the position murph is trying to get in to. Ignoring either of these points was stupid on paul blues part.
What I said about Gibraltar you've just agreed with, so how's that stupid?

Good for you, Murphs! Start scoring, for them, then use that confidence to keep scoring! Then we'll all be happy! Also, keep working hard and you will become a regular, for sure!
