Strikers in Ireland Squad
Wednesday, 29th Oct 2014 15:35

Blues frontmen Daryl Murphy and Conor Sammon have been named in a provisional 36-man Republic of Ireland squad for next month’s Euro 2016 qualifier in Scotland and the home friendly with the USA.

Scotland host Ireland at Celtic Park on Friday 14th November, with the USA at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin four days later.

Ireland are currently second in Group D on seven points from three games behind leaders Poland on goal difference, with Scotland fourth on four behind third-placed Germany with everyone having played three games.

Murphy will be hoping to add to his 13 full caps and Sammon to his nine. The duo are both looking for their first international goals. Ex-Blues Damien Delaney and Jon Walters and former loanee Paul Green are also in the squad.

There is no place for Blues striker David McGoldrick, who is still waiting for the paperwork regarding his qualification to go through, although we understand it is now very close to completion.

Republic of Ireland: David Forde (Millwall), Keiren Westwood, (Sheffield Wednesday), Darren Randolph (Birmingham), Rob Elliot (Newcastle), Richard Keogh (Derby), Marc Wilson (Stoke), Seamus Coleman (Everton), John O'Shea (Sunderland), Alex Pearce (Reading), Stephen Kelly (Reading), Paul McShane (Hull), Damien Delaney (Crystal Palace), Shane Duffy (Everton), James McCarthy (Everton), Jeff Hendrick (Derby), Ciaran Clark (Aston Villa), Stephen Ward (Burnley), Glenn Whelan (Stoke), Darron Gibson (Everton), Andy Reid (Nottingham Forest), Paul Green (Rotherham), Aiden McGeady (Everton), Anthony Pilkington (Cardiff), James McClean (Wigan), Robbie Brady (Hull City), Stephen Quinn (Hull City), David Meyler (Hull City), Wes Hoolahan (Norwich), Robbie Keane (Los Angeles Galaxy), Shane Long (Southampton), Daryl Murphy (Ipswich), Jon Walters (Stoke), Kevin Doyle (Wolves), Anthony Stokes (Celtic), Simon Cox (Reading), Conor Sammon (Ipswich).

Great, more or less a full strength squad.
Worry about a partner for O Shea in central defense, and a Left Back. Would Cresswell have an Irish granny? The rest of the squad is solid enough I think.

Must be frustrating for McGoldrick, will they ever hurry up and clear his paperwork!

Seem to recall we asked Cressy about an Irish gran given his Liverpool background and I'm sorry to say he said he didn't.

I find it bizarre they would pick Sammon over McGoldrick! Murphy deserves his call up, but agree with above post, hope he stays fit! We need him as have few other options.
