McCarthy Glad Arsenal Are Watching Mings
Friday, 5th Dec 2014 14:51

Town boss Mick McCarthy says he’s glad that the likes of Arsenal are keeping tabs on left-back Tyrone Mings. Earlier today, Gunners boss Arsene Wenger confirmed that the 21-year-old is one of a number of young players he has been watching this season.

Asked whether the Blues had received any offers or enquiries for Mings, McCarthy said: “If I had I wouldn’t tell you! I’d say no, so whether you believe me or not makes no odds.

“I’m glad that they’re looking at him, that’s great. I hope Chelsea are looking at Christophe and Man United are looking at Didzy and considering them because if that’s the case it means we’ve got good players.

“It’s what makes the world go round. We get players and if they’re really good players, somebody comes to look at them and big clubs buy them. It’s just the process for me. But they’re all under contract, so there’s nobody going anywhere.”

In addition to Arsenal, Chelsea, Newcastle, Sunderland, Everton, Manchester United and Burnley are amongst those keeping tabs on Mings, who is contracted until the summer of 2017, while Crystal Palace had an offer of more than £3 million rebuffed in the summer.

The Blues boss wouldn’t be drawn on what figure might tempt Town to sell: “36-24-36 was almost my favourite figure when Miss World used to be on. That was always the optimum, I thought, and that’s stuck with me all this time.”

Meanwhile, McCarthy confirmed that Luke Hyam will miss the Leeds game with the achilles injury which forced him out of the Charlton victory last week. The midfielder is likely to be back in action next week.

Kevin Bru and Teddy Bishop are both back from injuries and Christophe Berra from suspension.

If we sell Mings/McGoldrick then we can kiss promotion goodbye!

With Mick on this one. As long as clubs are looking at our players, we must be doing well. I would prefer Tyrone to stay here for the rest of the season, but if the price is right, then January is fine by me. I think any sell would see him loaned back to us for the rest of the season anyway, so nothing would change. We have been a selling club for many years now, so no big surprise if they sell the lad. Just get the right price, and move on.

It's the nature of the beast for teams that are doing well, other clubs are bound to be looking at our players, we will get more international call ups and greater risks of injuries that way etc. Having sold Cresswell this season I would hope we can hold on to Mings as our player for a little longer, as Derby have done with Will Hughes to give one example.

Agree with most here, when you're doing well your best players get noticed. I'd prefer to be in this situation than the exact opposite. It's a bit like when Didzy got the call for Ireland. A few here were moaning that he'd get injured etc. but if we want to be successful and get in the Premier league we'll have to get used to it.
Now, back to looking forward to the game tomorrow, COYB!!!

Pleased to see Mick said they are all under contract and nobody is going anywhere.
Good as you dont get anywhere by selling your best players.Look how well we have done since ME turned down those offers in the summer

Would far rather we pick players up for £10k and sell for £10m than sign them for millions and see the walk away for nothing! Obviously would love us to keep hold of him but we can't realistically turn down anywhere approaching £10m, would surely put us in a great position to strengthen overall.

Well said Tractorchef. The millions we wasted on players who were not up to it and those we allowed to leave on a free still rankles.

Finally the Club seems to have sorted itself out which is all due to Mick, TC and the team of scouts, Mick now has working on our behalf.

How much will he be worth to us if we stay in the top two and then end up in the PL? Way more than $10. Jonny Parr isn't going to keep us in the PL as our #1 left back and we can't bet on MM consistently finding this level of raw talent, for next to nothing. It's just not in the gene pool. So how much does Tyrone represent in terms of investment for this club? We simply cannot afford to sell him unless it's for much more than he's currently worth - we should think longer term. If he continues to play and to develop at this rate (and to rise in value at this rate) there's no way we can sell him for 10M or even 15M. We should everything we can to keep him, McGoldrick, and Bishop. We clearly have a championship winning team but that means nothing in the PL. Keeping our best players is vital to growth and prosperity. Staying in the PL is what we should be planning for, and this means considering the funds we will get from years of TV payouts, advertising, etc. So, how much is Tyrone Mings worth again?

McCarthy is no mug. He knows the vitality of keeping Mings and I think he will. The lad is going nowhere in the foreseeable future.

Burnley only got £4million for Charlie Austin last season! He must be worth near £20 m now!!

The Daily Telegraph today on page S7 has a headline, "Arsenal in move for Mings". Apparently, he "could become the subject of an £8 million bid by Arsenal next month."

You choose whether to believe it or not, but I would rather that we didn't sell our best players.

Take the money circa £20m neither of them are that good. The money would defiantly get us up next season. No full back is worth double m figures.
