McCarthy Proud of His “Horrible Bunch”
Monday, 20th Apr 2015 06:00

Boss Mick McCarthy expressed his pride in his Town squad after they picked up another hard-fought away point from their 1-1 away draw against his old club Wolves on Saturday.

“The first thing I just said to them in the dressing room afterwards was ‘What a belligerent, stubborn, hard-working, tough, horrible bunch of sods you’ve turned out to be, and I love you!’.

“‘And I’m proud of you because I think you need all those qualities to be a good team’. And we can play but we’ve certainly got all that and it’s lovely to have.”

McCarthy made no apologies for the no frills approach which has seen the sixth-placed Blues - who are three points plus a superior goal difference ahead of Brentford and Wolves in seventh and eighth with just two games to play - to the cusp of confirming a place in the play-offs for the first time in a decade.

“I would have thought our fans are going home pretty happy that we’ve come and added a point to the two home wins, and with some good performances,” he said.

“I think it takes a lot to get ourselves into the position that we’re in and a lot of those qualities that I talked about are probably the reason why we are where we are.

“It takes a lot of things to be up at the top. There will be teams below us who are all fanning out and playing sexy football and there are some of them that peer down their noses at it.

“We’re winning games, we’re in the top six, we’ve still got a chance of getting promoted, so anybody who cocks a snook at the way we do it, I laugh at them.

“I think it’s comical because I think what we do we do it well and isn’t that what having a job is all about? I’m sure you’d like to think your boss think that you do your job well.”

Elsewhere, West Ham are reported to be ready to make a £5 million move for Blues left-back Tyrone Mings if his predecessor at Portman Road Aaron Cresswell is sold over the summer.

The former Town full-back has been linked with the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City after an impressive first season with the Hammers.

It would be little surprise if West Ham have joined most of the rest of the Premier League in keeping tabs on Mings this season, although the Blues are likely to want a fee significantly in advance of £5 million for the former Chippenham defender.

Meanwhile, Town’s U21s are in action against Bristol City at Playford Road this morning (KO 11am).

Last Monday, goals from Jack Marriott, Alex Henshall and trialist Josh Yorwerth saw Mark Kennedy’s side to a 3-0 victory over the Robins at their Failand training ground.

Its been a rollercoaster. For fans who slag off Mick, at least realise with him its all about the bigger picture. With some managers we did have the attractive entertainkng football that was attempted every game. But Mick is a tactician and he changes his game plan to the opposition. That way you can achieve, however at the cost of entertainment in some, but not all games.

For those with the rose tinted glasses on who keep referring to our glory day (and Yes, they were glory days for sure) take a look through some of the goals we scored to get through the play offs last time. "Hoof Ball" anyone? Doesn't matter - we were promoted. And even during SBR's days, we had some good days for certain, we also had a few dodgy ones, but in the soft lens of nostalgia we choose to remember only the good for the sake of bashing our current over-performing manager and team. Honestly cannot believe some of the negative anti-Mick comments going on.

There are a lot of black or white opinions here!
We have a great deal to thank Mick for which has all been stated. However, surely the choices are not football or hoofball. Some of each would suit me.
Bring on Forest!

......... whatever our opinions are - it's doubtful, but IF we were to get promoted this season ( and I repeat, doubtful) we would have to have a dramatic turn around in style of play in the Premiership.

Otherwise, we may just be faced, and dealing with, the most embarrassing defeats the Club has EVER been exposed to.

If you think we could copy Chelsea, and get away with it - DREAM ON PEOPLE.

Blueboy - as you said in a previous post 'we need to get out of the championship before we take root' well we are on course for the first time in years - As u are not happy with current set up I can only only presume you seek a change in owner , manager , system - which would take afw more years to bear fruit - Danger we may take root? lets get behind Mick and the team the last few games
Agreed ? we can have differeing opinions but ultimately we want the same thing .
I think we can adapt - if we went up -with some additions
Talking to Wolves fans on Saturday they were happy with Mick in the earlier years - the difference between us and wOLVES under MM they said was their wingers - !!
MM has signed and looked to add that extra dimension but they have just not come thru
Connolly will

blueherts - as you rightly quote, it's all about opinions.

You obviously believe that IF we were to eventually leave the Championship behind (been there long enough to take root already!!) MM would be able to change his approach to the game with 'some additions', and adapt to the Premiership.

MM's much quoted CV mainly relates to the Championship - and doesn't fill me with confidence for the Premiership - But Who Knows ??

Our current style of play would fail miserably - with no width, and (obvious all season) no Plan B -we would be slaughtered, week in week out, in my opinion.

Therefore SOMETHING would need to change - hence my point.

Yes, we do all want the same (success) for our Club - just that some seem to think 'it will happen as things are' .......... and conveniently overlook the obvious.

COYB - either way.

Let's get bloody promoted first, that would be a start!
IF McCarthy did get us up, then he, would come under close scrutiny in reference to his ability to manage in top flight.
As I've stated before, none of us know what the future holds.... we could be in the Premiership by August, Mick could be sacked by Christmas, and Sam Allydice might become the next Ipswich manager! How does that sound people!!!!!!!

As I see it there are three stages of what could be termed success for a club like ours at the moment.
The first is making the playoffs-which MM and this squad are close to doing.
The second is getting promotion-which if MM and this squad make the playoffs we MIGHT achieve this season.
The third is staying in the premier league-which this squad would almost certainly NOT do(with or without MM)but as warktheline correctly says, lets get there first.
