Police Praise Fans
Saturday, 9th May 2015 20:36

Police praised Town and Norwich fans following today’s play-off derby at Portman Road with only five arrests made before, during and after the 1-1 draw.

Ipswich policing commander, Superintendent Louisa Pepper, said: "I am very pleased to say that overall, the atmosphere at today’s match was lively but good-natured, with minimal need for police intervention.

"Extensive planning went into the policing operation, which was firm in places, with a significant presence of officers.

“This was necessary to ensure supporters enjoyed the game and to cause the minimum impact possible on other members of the public in the area.

“I am very pleased to say that the operation was carried out exactly as planned with supporters enjoying a fantastic atmosphere.

"A very small number of people behaved unacceptably and were dealt with accordingly. This behaviour is not tolerated and swift action was taken to lessen the impact on individuals and families attending the game.

"Road closures were in place for a large part of the day to ensure the safety of those attending before and after the match and I would like to thank motorists for their co-operation during this time."

A 28-year-old man from Norwich was arrested on suspicion of a football offence, throwing a missile onto the pitch, a 54-year-old man from Ipswich was arrested in connection with a Section 5 Public Order Act offence, a 17-year-old boy from Cromer was arrested on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence, a 23-year-old man from Ipswich was arrested on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence and a 29-year-old man from Ipswich was arrested in connection with a Section 5 Public Order Act offence. They are all being questioned at Martlesham Police Investigation Centre.

Just re-read your post. You stated that you didn't know one person who sees Norwich as just another team apart from me. If that doesn't place me in a minority group, at least in your eyes, I don't know what does. You also made an instant judgement of me from a post on her from which you suggested that I ate sandwiches and told people to sit down and shut up without even knowing me as a person or a fellow supporter. That, my friend, is stereotyping.

We all love banter; most of us can tolerate swearing. What is not acceptable is the spewing out of the hatred bile which some seem to think is ok in the presence of women and children and is behaviour which can be routinely condoned at a football match.

I don't care if you agree or disagree but there is no room for hatred in football or any sport.

Ridiculous, just ridiculous. I think there must be one or two vicars sitting in the Cobbold these days. Probably the type of people that think we should be breathalysed on the way in the ground. Tally Ho chaps.Lets give our country cousins a good old game. Dear God!! (Sorry for the blaspheming vicar man )

No further comment is necessary or required. If you require an explanation I would suggest it is not me who is clutching at straws.

Unfortunately you can't choose your fellow supporters. For every twenty sensible ones there's a 'superkevwilson' with an IQ that barely reaches room temperature.

Thanks Superkev. Unfortunately I am one of the many who can't get a ticket. But I will be there in spirit and wishing for the right result. Enjoy the game and maybe I will be able to take you up on your offer at Wembley.

Just like to point out i got slated for calling our "country cousins" scum. The same country cousins that are going out of their way to spoil our fans matchday experience by not giving us a pub for the 2nd time this season even. Really nice people arent they? Scum!

Yes, I think that any small business that refuses to let opposing fans into their establishment (probably out of fear of attracting trouble) certainly justifies calling all people from Norwich "scum". Well done thebeat. You've got me on that one. Utter scum. All of them.
