Murphy and McGoldrick in Irish Squad
Tuesday, 12th May 2015 13:14

Town duo Daryl Murphy and David McGoldrick have been named in a provisional Republic of Ireland squad for June’s friendly against England and Euro 2016 qualifier against Scotland.

Manager Martin O’Neill, who was at Portman Road for Saturday’s play-off semi-final first leg against Norwich, has named a 33-man party which will be reduced before the squad assembles on June 1st.

Murphy, 32, will be looking to add to his 14 caps and to score his first international goal, while McGoldrick, 27, has previously been capped once and will also be looking to open his goals account.

Ireland face England at the Aviva Stadium on Sunday 7th June and Scotland at the same venue on Saturday 13th June.

O’Neill said: “We have some very big games coming up, which the players will savour to be a part of.

"I have named a provisional squad today, which I will shorten before we meet up on June 1st. I am looking forward to meeting up, and setting to work with the players.”

Former Blue Jon Walters, now with Stoke, is also in the squad, as is one-time academy schoolboy Richard Keogh, currently with Derby.

Republic of Ireland: Forde, Given, Westwood, Randolph, R Keogh, Wilson, Coleman, Christie, O’Shea, Pearce, McShane, McCarthy, Hendrick, Ward, Arter, Whelan, McGeady, McClean, Judge, Brady, Pilkington, Quinn, Meyler, Hoolahan, Keane, Long, Murphy, Walters, Doyle, Stokes, McGoldrick, Rooney, Cox.

@ jesney - We know he's fit he was on the bench on Saturday. He's not match fit but that's an entirely different thing and it will keep him out of the final squad I'd guess.

Murphs should be one of the fittest players due to playoffs etc.

Lets hope he will score winner against Boro at Wembley and the winner against the Scots!
That would cap an amazing season for him :) and for me!

You're right Seasider. We have to bear in mind the man is 32 and we can't expect him to maintain his amazing physical efforts forever. Fit happy and in form McGoldrick and Sears next season will be vital. Assuming we are still in the Championship of course......

Murphy has been immense for us this season, strong on the ground and in the air and deserves International recognition, if we could get McGoldrick back to his old form and fitness (great for Ireland) and add Freddy Sears to the equation, a formidable attacking Town side?

Difficult to see Murphy get a chance with Robbie Keane, Shane Long and Walters in the squad. It would be ironical if McGoldrick got on the team before Daryl!
