Hewitt and Marriott Released, No Deals Yet for Anderson, Ambrose, Chaplow and Hunt Brothers
Monday, 18th May 2015 17:56

Town boss Mick McCarthy has released right-back Elliott Hewitt and striker Jack Marriott, while he says no deals are currently on offer to Paul Anderson, Darren Ambrose, Stephen and Noel Hunt and loanee Richard Chaplow but that they could still stay with the club.

“I have spoken to all the players in the squad today,” McCarthy told Ipswich Player.

“Of the ones out of contract, we have released Elliott Hewitt and I’ve told Ando, Darren Ambrose, Chappers, Stephen Hunt and Noel that we won’t be offering them anything at the moment.

“I’m going away on holiday, they are going away and I’ve told them I want to see what is around. They will be doing the same as well.

“There is an element of freshening things up. We need to go again and you need fresh faces to do that so we will see what happens with those lads.

“I have not closed the door on those players. They are great lads. We might be good for them. They might be good for us but there is nothing happening with them at the moment.”

Fulham are understood to be interested in Anderson, the Blues having failed to take up an option in the former Bristol City man's contract.

Wales U21 international Hewitt, who joined Town from Macclesfield for an initial £150,000, in the summer of 2012, has spent much of the season on loan at Colchester and could well join the U's on a permanent basis. The 20-year-old made only 10 starts and six sub appearances for the Blues.

Town have confirmed that Marriott has been released, while Anthony Wordsworth, Paul Taylor, technically still a Blues player despite having his contract settled in January, and short-term signing Paddy Kenny will also definitely be moving on, along with loanee Zeki Fryers, who goes back to Crystal Palace.

Fellow loanees Chaplow and Luke Varney, who has been offered the chance to undergo his rehab with the Blues, have been released by their parent clubs Millwall and Blackburn. McCarthy has said he'll look at offering terms to Varney once he is over the ruptured achilles injury which is set to keep him out of action for more than six months.

LIke Hewitt, Marriott spent the latter part of 2014/15 on loan at Colchester. Having come through the Town academy, the 20-year-old, who is understood to be interesting Luton, made his one start for the Blues in the Capital One Cup and came off the bench twice in the Championship.

Midfielder Jay Tabb is also out of contract but we understand that the 31-year-old is expected to stay with the club with his existing deal including an option for an extension.

Agree with all of your comments Stow tractor, was about to post the same points. The Marriott comment is comical as he couldnt get in a Colchester team that couldnt score. I saw Hewitt at Colchester twice and he looked limited especially with distribution where he constantly gave the ball away, he also struggled to get in there team whilst on loan. As for the others, none have been world beaters and apart from paying for a ceiling and scoring last week, you were all calling for Anderson to be left out all season. Stewart has been disappointing but was injured up until Xmas so with a preseason and a bit of luck he could be as good as a new signing. COYB

As a frequent user of TWTD I thought it was about time to sign up.. Firstly I would like to say what a fantastic job MM has done with a very limited budget.. Just goes to show you haven't got to throw millions at it to be successful.. And that is what I believe the season was.. A success! The defeat to Norwich is still very raw (still getting over it) but with 3/4 additions I feel we can give it a right go next season.. As so many state chambo is not a full back.. Does a job but as soon as he comes up against pace my hands go over my eyes! A fantastic captain but needs to be in the centre along with Berra or smith! I say Berra or smith because I'll be amazed if we don't receive a bid for Berra in the summer.. In my opinion the best centre halve in the division! A superb bit of business from MM and TC to get him on a free! I think the squad only needs a few tweaks for us to better what we ave just achieved.. A must is a goal scoring midfielder player.. I say goal scoring midfield player because I don't necessarily think it has to be a winger.. The 4-3-3 system has been a great success when used.. Don't get me wrong I love to see a winger in full flight and they are generally the players who would get more bums on seats at PR.. Oh how I loved Bobby Petta when he was on his game! We look to have some promising youngsters coming through and this has to be another positive.. So a right back... A goal scoring midfield player... A winger and a centre forward.. 2016.. The promotion train.. Who's coming??
COYB!!

Letting Hewitt go is a strange one. Thought he did a good job when called upon ( at least as good as Fryers for a lot less money ). Hopefully the reason for keeping Tabb over Anderson is that we will use two out and out wingers next season.

Gutted for Ando, but hopefully he'll do a Tabb (last season) and stick around of his own volition.

The youngsters - well, I had hoped for good things, especially from Jack M (wanted them chants from the stands: "We love Jack Marriott ... !"), but ...

I also think the Hunt sisters should stick around, too - especially Noel.

But good luck to them all.

Bit surprised about Hewitt because I thought and hoped that he would make it with us.
Still hopeful that Ando will be able to stay-he clearly wants to.
As has been said,if Marriott could only get a few minutes at a time in a relegation fighting Colchester(if in the 18 at all)he is very unlikely to make it at Championship level.
MM obviously waiting to see who else is available before final decisions made about Ambrose and Hunt snr and jnr.

None of them are good enough, so let's hope they're all gone before next season.

I think Kyle Hammond will be pushing for the right back position next season. Has apparently impressed with his commitment and work ethic during his spell our injured.
Would like to see Ando offered another year. Feel a little sorry for him as he has never had the opportunity to be an attacking winger as always had to cover Chambers who as we all know is out of position at right back.

Dream on, Anderson is utter dross who goes missing all too often during games. how many times have you wondered if he is even on the pitch due to the minimal contribution he makes.

Shame about Hewitt and Marriott, Hewitt looked good when he played, thought we'd keep him around but i suppose with Parr now also ahead of him in RB maybe it was partly his own choice to move on, Marriott had alot of promise but at the end of the day if he was good enough he'd be in the squad as Bishop is proof but we have too many good Attacking options atm, Anderson i feel is a good squad player and good to have on the bench, love his attitude and the tweet shows his passion, as for the rest I'd let them go and sign in a few new faces to freshen it up a little.

I don't think Anderson beats his man enough and gets the ball in the box and to be honest he does frustrate me a lot. That being said he's grown on me a significant amount in the past 2 weeks especially with that goal and twitter post about scoring against the scum. I can't see any reason why we can't retain him as a squad player for next season, as others have said he certainly offers a lot more than tabb!!!

Sorry if Ando ends up going - I'd have loved him to stay, as he's our best dead-ball deliverer, and a worthy successor to the Darren Currie school of Slow Wingers (Headmaster, D Beckham). Great that Tabby is staying. As for rest - I suspect Mick wants to up the ante a bit, like last year when I was surprised we didn't sign Paul Green.

hhmmm - just goes to show once you go out on loan more than once then that's it! Hewitt who actually started the season well I think has been a little harshly done by!

As for the others who haven't had their contract renewed well I wouldn't. Seems like Anderson really put a shift in against Norwich but have to say shame about the rest of the season. Skuse, Bru, Bishop and Hyam (skin of the teeth) are the midfielders and we need genuine quality out wide and an attacking midfielder.

It is disappointing, but not surprising, to see the departures of Hewitt and Marriott.

I am amazed that Anderson is not getting a deal.

We really need to sign a right-back.

Nor really surprised with any of these although part of me hopes Ambrose & N.Hunt end up getting contracts. Anderson was good in last 2 matches but is all to inconsistent whilst we know Mick loves Tabby who can play centrally or wide.
The wording Mick uses does make me think the club may go for it a bit more next season hopefully playing with pace which is one thing we lack. We also lack creativity but I think a fit Didsy can give us that.
Good luck to those released

Why all of a sudden pro-Ando, because he scored in the first leg and offered to pay for damage on a broken ceiling? Yes, he gives all he can, but is that enough? Progression is needed, surely there is better at Championship level! McCarthy has used such players to firstly establish a work ethic at club, and in doing so, set the bar for incoming players. Secondly, these players have stabilised our club at this level.
McCarthy knows, inadvertedly, this has now raised the stakes upon himself. Play offs this season, what is expected next season?
Therefore to continue progression, a higher calibre of player will be required. Totally agree with players not being offered renewed contracts.... Time to move on. By the way, I do appreciate what these players, such as Anderson, Hunt, etc has given our club, and us supporters ...OUR PRIDE BACK.

Sign up Anderson and N. Hunt. Not worried about the rest. Wish them the best of luck in their careers

Suspect some of those mentioned will still be offered deals, but Mick is surely making space for academy players to come through as well as those transfers already negotiated

It was a pretty good feeling for me as well

......... this squad didn't need too much adjustment, a couple of quality additions, and a couple of instances of dead wood removal was / is all that's necessary.

This squad was better than what we actually achieved - tactics / substitutions were the problem in more than one instance this past season. We should, and could, have had this sown up long before the end of the season play-offs. January being the critical point.

We looked so much more potent going forward and attacking the opposition - which we did on occasions, more by default than design unfortunately.

It looks as if it will be very much a 'back to the drawing board' close season - whilst MM's see's what's around, hopefully not with to many 'Tabby's' in mind - or too many last minute left overs.

Otherwise, we know where we will be for yet another 'few' seasons, or more ....... !!

.......... and can we hope for ALL square pegs in square holes next season ?? ..... now that would be a good start, and make an enormous difference.

Although maybe that would be expecting too much.

Sorry to hear about Hewitt and Anderson but otherwise makes sense, we need to improve the squad from a footballing point of view, closing down and route one has taken us as far as we can expect, to push on we need to be able to play some passing football as well.

If we are going to return to the premiership we need better players than Anderson. Tabb is useful as a squad player. Unfortunately Ambrose sits in the stand more than in the dug out. Hopefully we will see new signings & importantly a creative midfielder to compliment Bishop.

Not disappointed by any of these decisions. More skillful quicker players needed to take us forward. No good winning possession if you can't pass the ball a few times and hang on to it. Too many times when we won the ball this season after 2 - 3 passes sometimes less we gave the ball away cheaply. Great core of players but desperately need right back with pace and wide men with pace but maintain the superhuman work rate. A keeper who commands the area would also be a nice luxury. I was very happy with where we finished the season and it gives us a great confidence boost with a few stronger additions to start next season. Really looking forward to next season hopefully hanging on to those we wish to keep, or if they do go, making some serious money on transfers received to help mould a stronger squad.
