Hewitt and Marriott Released, No Deals Yet for Anderson, Ambrose, Chaplow and Hunt Brothers
Monday, 18th May 2015 17:56

Town boss Mick McCarthy has released right-back Elliott Hewitt and striker Jack Marriott, while he says no deals are currently on offer to Paul Anderson, Darren Ambrose, Stephen and Noel Hunt and loanee Richard Chaplow but that they could still stay with the club.

“I have spoken to all the players in the squad today,” McCarthy told Ipswich Player.

“Of the ones out of contract, we have released Elliott Hewitt and I’ve told Ando, Darren Ambrose, Chappers, Stephen Hunt and Noel that we won’t be offering them anything at the moment.

“I’m going away on holiday, they are going away and I’ve told them I want to see what is around. They will be doing the same as well.

“There is an element of freshening things up. We need to go again and you need fresh faces to do that so we will see what happens with those lads.

“I have not closed the door on those players. They are great lads. We might be good for them. They might be good for us but there is nothing happening with them at the moment.”

Fulham are understood to be interested in Anderson, the Blues having failed to take up an option in the former Bristol City man's contract.

Wales U21 international Hewitt, who joined Town from Macclesfield for an initial £150,000, in the summer of 2012, has spent much of the season on loan at Colchester and could well join the U's on a permanent basis. The 20-year-old made only 10 starts and six sub appearances for the Blues.

Town have confirmed that Marriott has been released, while Anthony Wordsworth, Paul Taylor, technically still a Blues player despite having his contract settled in January, and short-term signing Paddy Kenny will also definitely be moving on, along with loanee Zeki Fryers, who goes back to Crystal Palace.

Fellow loanees Chaplow and Luke Varney, who has been offered the chance to undergo his rehab with the Blues, have been released by their parent clubs Millwall and Blackburn. McCarthy has said he'll look at offering terms to Varney once he is over the ruptured achilles injury which is set to keep him out of action for more than six months.

LIke Hewitt, Marriott spent the latter part of 2014/15 on loan at Colchester. Having come through the Town academy, the 20-year-old, who is understood to be interesting Luton, made his one start for the Blues in the Capital One Cup and came off the bench twice in the Championship.

Midfielder Jay Tabb is also out of contract but we understand that the 31-year-old is expected to stay with the club with his existing deal including an option for an extension.

One of our key areas to improve on is PACE and WIDTH
We need to add that to the solid core we have. I think back to Brighton away where Ando was poor - after that game he didn't get a look in. Although I still think he has a lot of assists.Maybe keep him on but others think we can find better.

Not surprised that Hewitt has been released, MM obviosly believes we don't need a proper RB, when he played he looked a decent prospect, he made some mistakes (just as Mings is doing) but he is still young, lets face it, it's what five seasons now that the position has been been left to drift. Just a weakness that teams have and will continue to exploit more. All credit to Chambo but we all know that's not his position.

Think Ando is possibly going because Connelly is in the frame for that game time next season? Personally think he would be a decent squad player next season. Not to bothered about the others. Hewitt hasn't fulfilled his promise, nor Marriott. Both still could and hope they do but like Sears maybe a step back to move forward. Everyone else is a squad player. To improve we must get players better than those we have and can only do that by freeing up money from those on the periphery. If MCG is staying then a left winger and a cmf are top of my shopping list, a decent 4th striker too as I think MCG, Sears and Murphy can play up top together so impact striker needed. Don't mind Tabb staying, just want to see him as a central midfielder.

Anderson may well have saved himself with his play off performances. Before those games I would have said we should let him go.

I like Tabb, but I think keeping him on is frankly a poor move and shows a lack of ambition to be honest. If we are serious about promotion, I don't think Jay Tabb is a serious contender for game time. Sorry Tabby.

Can't understand the Hewitt one..young and very promising - best player on the pitch on the opening day of last season now we'll need to look for another player as cover?..bizzarre one Mick.

We need some youth adding to the squad - far too many injury prone journeymen in last season's squad.

Other than the two who've been released, their future is dependent on who Mick manages to get in during the summer and whether they are still needed or are happy to be pushed down the order, as the case may be.

It will be interesting to see who Mick goes for, although on past experience the first we'll know of new signings will be when they're presented at a press conference! I suspect he might look at one or two from the Championship's relegated teams, in particular Wigan.

Well what a clearout from a squad that at one time could hardly fill the bench!
A dozen is quite a lot but half have been told to 'foxtrot oscar'!Whilst the others have not been given new contracts.Smart move Mick
BTW Walk the Wark, think you will find that Tabb instigated his year extension, not the club.
From Micks remarks and the size of squad, think we will see several coming in during the next 3 months, hopefully one or two for a fee, with similar number from youth ranks.
This might also give Stuart and Henshall a chance, who like Hewitt have not really been given the opportunity at first team level.
Good luck Mick and enjoy your holiday.

Personally I would have kept Ando with the thought of converting him into a right back/wingback. I was impressed with what I saw when he went to right back at Carrott Rd. Twice as good as Chambers in that position and has a much better delivery. I think MM will be playing the three guys up front next season so I would have thought wide men would not be required. Alternatively kinda hope that MM considers a 5 man back line next season with wing backs.

Would just like to make the point that MM has shown real class and honesty with the way he's done this, but been really open and honest with the players, and that 'we will see'. Hasn't sugar-coated it, so they can still respect him. Well done Mick!

Let's hope there's some good value quality in lower leagues and on frees, cos we aint gonna be challenging at the top of the league next year if the Hunt bros are our 'threat on the bench'.
