Town Travel to Fortuna in Pre-Season Thursday, 28th May 2015 15:36
Town are to play a pre-season friendly away against Fortuna Dusseldorf on Friday 17th July at the Paul-Janes-Stadion (KO 6.30pm local time, 5.30pm BST).
In recent seasons fans of the German club making their annual pilgrimage to Portman Road to catch the Blues in action - 170 were at the Derby match in January - have become a familiar sight, with a number of Town supporters having made reciprocal visits.
“What fantastic news!” Supporters Club chair Elizabeth Edwards told the club site.
“We have welcomed so many Fortuna fans to Ipswich, and many Town fans have already made a trip over to Germany.
“It has been a dream for a long time to see the clubs in action together - as well as being a great excuse for a trip and a party.
“I was over there last September and the passion for getting a match organised was plain to see.
"The Fortuna Blues branch of the ITFC Supporters Club has worked so hard to get this game to happen and we will be working together to organise fan activities, in town and at the stadium. There will even be an after-match party at a nearby bar and disco.
The Supporters Club has compiled a travel guide with details of the post-match party.
Ulli Münsterberg, the organiser of the Fortuna Blues’ trips, was one of several fans — along with Fortuna legend Egon Köhnen — interviewed on BBC Radio Suffolk’s Life’s a Pitch during 2013/14. You can also find out more on how the link initially came about here.

@ MaySixth - They got 28,000 as it was the last game for Andreas „Lumpi“ Lambertz after 13 years at Fortuna, played in team that was in the 4th league and kept his place in the team that was in the 1. Bundesliga 2 season ago!
If your flying you'll want to make sure you fly into Dusseldorf International. Dusseldorf Weeze is 40 miles out of Dusseldorf. Ryanair fly to both but the cheapest flights are to Weeze.
However my beemer needs to see its motherland so ill be taking the Autobahn's followed by a quick blast around the Nurburgring
Get over there Town fans and enjoy. I was working there in 78 just after we'd won the FA cup. A real party city that Alestat area. Remember, my work finished and i arrived back through Harwich on the day Town were at Wembley playing Forest in the Charity Shield. Decision time,my first son was born a few days earlier and should i go north and see my boy and then catch a train to London or go south and on to Wembley and see him a few hours later. Chose the first and missed the game !
Thought I would offer my advice as Dusseldorf is an area I know well and the area around the low cost airport Dusseldorf Weeze even better!!..
I know all the travel guides put together by the club are saying to avoid Dusseldorf Weeze but when it is almost £80 cheaper and it offers better flight times perfect for a quick break away then it cannot be ignored...
I have just booked my flights for £19.98 return from Stansted to Dusseldorf Weeze.
Getting into Dusseldorf is simple!..
When you arrive at Weeze, it is a small Ryanair ex army base- So it's small and easy to get through customs etc and won't take you long to get out.
When you walk out the airport turn right and you will see a load of mini buses/coaches, Jump on to one heading to a small town 'Kevelear' this will take you on a short bus drive (10mins-€2euros approx) to Kevelear train station which offers a 1hr direct train service into Dusseldorf HBF (Dusseldorf Central Station) round trip cost of around £12. Trains run every hour some days every 30mins (price may of increased since I was last there 2 years ago) Taxi's are available at the airport but will set you back between €10-15.
Generally the buses from airport run in timing with the trains getting you to station with enough time to purchase tickets etc.
Kevelear itself is a nice town to wander around and has a good sports bar called 'live' about 2 minute walk from station serving beer towers as well as a few other cafés serving beer and typical German food. I would advise on the return to get to Kevelear have a few drinks in case any issues with trains etc giving you piece of mind that your only 10 minutes from the airport.
So if you want the cheaper option snap it up! It's not as daunting as people making it out to be! Any questions I'll be happy to help! COYB!!!
I've just booked Ryanair flights to Cologne/Bonn airport for £39 return. Looks like the train takes 45 minutes to Dusseldorf (35 mins on the ICE) and cost about 15-20 Euros. 17/07 STN 7:55, CGN 10:20 18/07 CGN 22:10, STN 22:40
Weeze looks a good option as well though, I hadn't checked the price before I booked. Just need a hotel for the Friday night now, any recommendations?
ITFC Away Game and I can grab a cab to get there. Pretty ******* nice. Dusseldorf is awesome. Partycity all the way. The only thing that sucks is playing in that homeless shelter of a stadium instead of Esprit Arena.
I'm going to shoot myself in the foot here but a word of advice. . . . .
Dusseldorf Weeze Airport is about 40 miles from Dusseldorf, in the middle of a wood. Its about an hour or more on a bus. Incredibly expensive by taxi. It is actually a bit of a nightmare.
My advice would be to fly into Cologne or Dortmund (similar prices from Stansted) with either Ryanair or German Wings. Both cities are far better connected to Dusseldorf. Cologne is actually a quality city (don't tell Fortuna fans that) and its about 20 - 30 mins to Dusseldorf on the train I believe.
