Hyam Undergoes Surgery
Saturday, 11th Jul 2015 08:29

Midfielder Luke Hyam is facing up to another four months on the sidelines having undergone surgery on the knee injury which has kept him out of action since January.

“Sadly we’ve lost Luke Hyam to injury,” manager Mick McCarthy told the club site from the squad’s training camp at the Carton House Hotel in Co Kildare in Ireland.

“He’s suffered a setback and could be looking at three and a half to four months out.

“He’s rehabbed twice now and he’s had surgery this morning [Friday]. Hopefully that will get him right but it’s a big loss for us and my heart breaks for him.

“You’d be disappointed for anyone to get an injury like that but for it to happen to such a good, hardworking pro is really sad. He will be a big miss for us and he was really upset when he had to leave the training camp.

“We wish him a speedy recovery and hopefully he can be back sooner rather than later, we want him back fit playing for us.”

The 23-year-old initially suffered the injury in the FA Cup replay against Southampton.

The Blues seem certain to look for another central midfielder given Hyam's continued absence.

Town start their pre-season friendly programme this afternoon with a game against Shelbourne at Tolka Park, Dublin (KO 3pm). Meanwhile, the U21s are in action at Leiston (KO 3pm).

There will always be idiots, but taximan is premier league! Whatever you thing of Hyam as a player, he is a young lad who never gives less than 100%! This injury is devastating for him and he deserves everybodies full support. Why doesn't taximan support Chelsea one season and Man City the next? We don't need you!

Will defenitely miss Hyam as an alternative to Skuse.

@Slambo, I saw that 7 figure midfielder bid link too, desperate to know who it is. With Cabaye joining Palace Willliams is never going to get a game. I worry about his injury record but a fully fit Joniesta firing on all cylinders could make a huge difference to our midfield.

I liked the Donaldson link too the other day. He got 16 last year in a struggling side and has real pace and power, and can play wide in a front 3 also. Found this article from a year ago which seems to sum up his style of play: http://www.birminghammail.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/birmingham-city-cla

Big loss.
What he lacks in skill he makes up for in effort.
Hope he's back by Christmas.

Now let's not waste money on over the hill strikers and bring in a decent central midfielder.

Perhaps not the most talented player in the squad but we missed him last season and always does a job. He was excellent in the home win vs Watford. Was beginning to get further forward as well. Get well soon Luke - you will be missed.

It's all about opinions but I think we massively missed Luke last season largely as we lost him doing Skuses running and tackling for him. Personally I'd have Luke deep lying and let Bish, Bru, Williams(?) and co push on. However whatever your views on players on the pitch some of the comments on here about Luke beggar belief. Swift recovery Luke 👍

Oh and I'd take Barton on all day long.

Sad news for Luke and I wish him a speedy recovery, but ultimately considering his role is a tough tackling central midfielder, you have to ask whether he will be able to fulfil that role again. Our already small squad, made up of many inexperienced youth players is now even smaller/weaker. Time to spend the Mings money and strengthen the squad. We already have two loans, so permanent reinforcements required.

Best wishes to Luke.

Worcesterblie. I agree about Barton. I'd take him he day. But it wont be him, we couldn't afford his wages. As for missing Hyam. I don't get it. Most on here were saying he should be dropped as he was playing badly before he got injured. Now all of a sudden, we missed him. You say we missed him doing Skuses running for him. The fact is you cannot play both of them in the same team. Its one or the other. I've never had a prob with Hyam playing when Skuse is out. But I would never play them together. And if u plu them both u can't also have bru or bishop playing. Unless ur gonna play 1up front,5 in midfield, which we dont

Has. Ur comment a mute. We've ready bid for a player to replace him. And actually we have a better squad now already than we had last season. May not be huge but then mm has stated he wants a squad of 22 1sr team players, doesn't want 29 as those not involved can, as he put it, be a pain in the arse. You have to remember that the chances are that connolly, McDonnell, henshall, benyu and one or two others could break through this year too.

I wish Hyam every best wish for his recovery and hope that he is back in the squad fit and well by Christmas.

I think that he's a good player, it's just that having both him and Skuse in central midfield is a bit too much of a good thing.

I agree that Williams, if fit, would be a wonderful signing.

I cannot understand why we got rid of Anderson. Perhaps not the most richly talented player, but very hard working and must be capable of adapting to another role.

What some crazy, nasty comments on here. Luke Hyam has given his all for us, loves playing for Town and Mick McCarthy rates him.

I hope he recovers soon and we can have him back in the team. We certainly missed him when he was injured this year although we had a good replacement in Bru.

Just remember some of you. Players actually read this forum and it won't be nice for Hyam reading some of your comments!

The way to win the league with our current squad is to play 2 holding central midfield players ,so 4 2 1 3 system. One attacking central midfield player and 3 strikers. The full backs need to play as wingers in order to supply the width. The system offers defensive strength and an attacking threat. I suspect this is what MM had in mind , so the loss of hyam is a real shame. If you look at our pre and post christmas form , the pre christmas form was excellent ,after christmas it was mid table form. The loss of hyam was a huge factor last season as was McG ,but sears made up for McG. Nobody covered the loss of Hyam. Players were tried ,Hunt ,Tabb etc but weakened us considerably. So expect a signing that is a dynamic ball winning type in centre mid. One last point ,as is often the case ,the postponing of an operation never works. If Hyam was operated on 4 months ago he would be better positioned now than he actually is.

Joey Barton..?! PLEASE! Great footballer and I actually quite enjoy his quasi philosophical musings, but the bloke's a liability. Not a Mick McCarthy kind of player. Not many managers' kind of player...

I'm also not so sure about Jonny Williams. Love him, brilliant player, but we might be letting our emotions get in the way a little bit. He seems really injury prone. But then, so's McGoldrick. Dunno what to think anymore...

One thing's for sure, the 'Hyaaaaaam the one and only' chant I had lined up is going to have to go on ice a bit longer. Shame, that...

Siambo - sympathetic as I may be I know from bitter experience a knee injury of this type can end a career at any level let alone the rigor of Championship I hope I'm wrong for the lads sake.
Barton - you clearly don't watch much footy if you think he would (baggage excluded) not be a fantastic acquisition. Mick won't go for it he doesn't like someone telling him he is wrong!

Unbelievable how some on here can say the boy is negative & be happy with Skuse in the team. You don't want to play with both in the side but if you are going to play with either of them then Hyam should be first choice as although he might put the occasional pass astray at least he does pass the ball forward ! Making do with a holding midfielder who will only pass the ball backwards is what contributed to our poor form & Murphys goals drying up from January to the end of the season,
Close Scuse down & the ball goes back to Chambers close him down & he hoofs the ball clear down the wing sending Murphy out wide on a 50/50 chase, removing our main goal threat!
If we can't afford a better player than the both of them then I hope Hyam gets fit quickly as the alternative may stop us getting relegated but is not positive enough to get us promoted.

Blues1 - I respect your opinion, but ultimately disagree. I personally don't think we have a strong enough squad depth wise. Decent players but insufficient options. Too many inexperienced youngsters for me, but as I say respect your opinion. We need to press on and hit the ground running. One of those youngsters you mention may break through, indeed in hope they do, but no guarantees with that I'm afraid.

Some unbelievably unsympathetic comments (not all) re- Luke. The lad has just spent months trying to get fit after a bad injury and then this happens. Even an amateur jogger knows how frustrating it can be when you are otherwise "fit" but can't perform because of an injury. It must be 100 times worse if it concerns your career. Hyam needs everyone's support, not negative posts about his perceived lack of ability.

All these fans who say that his career is finished can you enlighten me?

I have read the news article twice now and cannot find any description of his injury, its seriousness and the long term prognosis.

So can some one please explain exactly what is wrong with his knee and put it in layman's terms (for a simpleton like me) why he will never recover from it. Thanks

and hey Presto!!- after the article the other day about Mick welcoming Luke back I actually commented 'don't hold your breath Mick'.

I wish Luke a steady recovery but he seems to have injury after injury and take an age to get over them...personally feel he could be afflicted with injuries for the rest of his career due to his style of play.

Replace him and do it now. We never did this successfully last year.
We have the resources.

That FA Cup Replay cost us dearly, what with MacG also getting injured.

Get well soon Luke, really enjoyed watching your bite in the mid.

For goodness sake. Why the hell didn't they get this op done at the end of last season?? They must have had a pretty good idea of the extent of damage. It beggers belief they are doing It now. He'll be out fitness wise half the season now.
