Clarke Helps Pompey to Cup Shock
Wednesday, 12th Aug 2015 21:51

On-loan Town centre-half Matt Clarke played the full 90 minutes as League Two Portsmouth beat Championship Derby County 2-1 in the Capital One Cup first round at Fratton Park.

Clarke, 18, impressed throughout against a Rams frontline which featured ex-Blue Darren Bent as Pompey secured their place in the second round alongside the Blues.

Adam McGurk and Conor Chaplin scored the Portsmouth goals either side of Jason Shackell’s equaliser for Derby.

Academy product Clarke is with Pompey on a youth loan until January 3rd with Town able to recall him at 24 hours’ notice after the first 28 days of the spell.

The draw for the second round of the Capital One Cup takes place on Sky Sports following the Doncaster-Leeds tie on Thursday evening.

The winning teams from round one will be joined in the draw by the Premier League sides not competing in Europe. The 12 Premier League teams will be seeded alongside the top 12 round one winners.

Imagine this as a future back line- Kenlock, Clarke, Yorwerth, Emmanuel. An entire homegrown (mostly) back four. Love it!

he was a beast won nearly everything, dominated the defence.

As a club, we are for sure in much better shape since McCarthy's arrival. On a different note, I see Brentford have cancelled their next home game against Brum, due to unacceptable playing surface!!!

No doubt we have some great prospects coming through, especially in the back line...managed in the right way we could either have an awesome side or make a shed load!

Derby were reduced to ONE shot on target! The Ipswich conveyor belt of talent just keeps on a-rollin'..!

There's absolutely no doubt about it, this kid is going to be something special, I can feel it. He looked like he'd been playing professional football for years tonight, an incredible performance. He reminds me a bit of a young, and more composed Phil Jones. Such exciting times ahead! Keep them rolling off the conveyebelt and we'll be just fine.

I'm very pleased that he is looking the part for Pompey.

However I am very disappointed that Pompey turning over Derby shagged my acca tonight.

Good player already. I seem to remember he did a good job in a friendly against Wet Spam. (Was that last season?). Hope we make it clear we want him back and he is still one of ours.

He was generally very good, and we certainly have a rich vein of talent coming through. Just one question: For the equaliser should he have been covering the right side instead of letting two smaller players get out jumped? His position in that Derby move was in the centre of the box.

Just a question - if he's this good why has he not been kept in our squad which is short on defenders & been fairly "shaky" both in pre-season & last Saturday when we knew Berra would be out ??? Seem's odd .....

Warktheline, if it is unplayable now for the Brum game, then maybe we should appeal our result and get Brentford to forfeit the game or ask for the game to be played again!!

Agree too phillo, seems little ridcolous!

What happens if we draw Pompey in the next round, probably no clause that he can't play as they aren't in the same division.

Punchnohopers, totally agree in regards to Brentford and pitch. At Championship level completely unacceptable .

I pretty sure if the parent club has no objections then (in the event we draw Pompey) Clarke can play against us. If this were to happen it will be good to see how he plays against our strikers.

I was at the game last night and it was so easy to forget this kid is 18! Had Darren Bent in his pocket all game looks strong in the air and composed with the ball at his feet, based on what I saw he could replace Smith next season

How come so many Town fans were at the Pompey match? Impressive scouting guys!

Re Brentford pitch - terrible as it was, it was good enough for Oxford United to win 4-0 on. Puts our result into perspective....

Looks a real star in the making. Its good to see youngsters coming through again. I can remember seeing the academy playoff final between Town and Newcastle in 2000 and seeing a young Darren Bent score a scorcher for us and commenting on he was one to watch.

On a side note does anyone know what the punishment for Brentford will be over the pitch seems unfair we had to play on it but now they cancel home games if its not fit for purpose they should be stripped of the draw.

Brentford will have no punishment, Birmingham and the league have agreed, as long as its relaid in the two weeks in between.

topguy added 11:35 - Aug 13
and to be fair, comparing our game with oxford was ridiculous as its was a completely different Brentford with 11 changes, and plus oxford are prob more used to playing on poor surfaces, I think it was Brentford knowing the pitch was bad to try and gain home advantage, but its backfired and its just an excuse to cover 2 poor performances, what needs to be asked is if they had beat us and oxford, would they ask to relay the pitch I think not.

Well played Matt and the rest of the Pompey team. Can anyone confirm whether we will be a seeded side in the round two draw - if so, I assume we are almost certain to face lower league opposition again. Hopefully another chance for some of our younger players to impress.
