Blues Make Seven Changes at Doncaster
Tuesday, 25th Aug 2015 18:58

Town boss Mick McCarthy has named the expected much-changed side for this evening’s Capital One Cup second round tie at Doncaster Rovers.

From the team which started at Preston on Saturday, only keeper Dean Gerken, centre-half Tommy Smith, who captains, and strikers David McGoldrick and Brett Pitman are in the XI at the Keepmoat Stadium.

Josh Emmanuel is at right-back, Myles Kenlock on the left and Josh Yorwerth is alongside Smith at the centre of the defence.

In midfield, Adam McDonnell, 18, is handed his Town debut alongside Giles Coke in the centre with Jay Tabb on the left and Larsen Touré on the right.

Amongst the subs is striker James Alabi, who joined the Blues after a successful trial earlier in the week.

Former Town loanees Richard Chaplow and Richie Wellens start in the Doncaster midfield.

Tonight's match will go to extra-time if the game is a draw after 90 minutes and penalties if the scores are still level after the additional half an hour.

The draw for the third round will be made after tonight's matches with the Premier League sides in Europe entering the competition. If they win this evening, the Blues will be ball number 12. Full numbers here. Third round ties will be played in the week commencing September 21st.

Doncaster: Stuckmann, Taylor-Sinclair, Butler, Jones, McCullough, Evina, Wellens, Main, Coppinger, Chaplow, Williams. Subs: Marosi, Lund, Middleton, Carberry, Mandeville, P McKay, Whitehouse.

Town: Gerken, Emmanuel, Kenlock, Yorwerth, Smith (c), Coke, McDonnell, Tabb, Touré, McGoldrick, Pitman. Subs: Crowe, Chambers, Maitland-Niles, Alabi, Fraser, Benyu, Sears. Referee: Scott Duncan (Northumberland).

Not a bad team. Emmanuel has some, albeit very limited, championship experience, whilst Gerken and Smith have been regulars. The midfield perhaps looks the weakest area, but there are three very experienced players surrounding the debutant. Up front looks very strong, as does the bench, which is impressive! All in all, a team capable of beating Doncaster.

Great opportunity for the youngsters and also good to see Tommy Smith given the chance to prove himself further and hopefully silence some of his critics. Good luck lads!

More or less what I thought, except for Smith playing in place of Berra, who I expected to start.

Come on you Blue Boys. I want to see us in that third round draw.
