Hyam Set to Sign New Deal
Tuesday, 10th May 2016 13:40

TWTD understands that midfielder Luke Hyam will put pen to paper on his new contract within the next 24 hours. The 24-year-old has agreed a new two-year deal running until 2018 with an option for a further season.

As previously reported, the club and Hyam initially failed to agree new terms but the player accepted a revised offer towards the end of last month, as manager Mick McCarthy confirmed, the Blues having already activated an option for another season in his previous contract.

Hyam came through Town academy and having made his debut at Middlesbrough on the opening day of the 2010/11 campaign has now made 114 starts and 17 sub appearances, scoring three goals.

The former Northgate High School pupil missed the early part of 2014/15 having undergone knee surgery but, having spent a month on loan at Rotherham, returned to the side just after Christmas and went on to make 11 starts and six sub appearances.

With creative midfielders around him he would be in my team every week - but what do I know only been watching Town for over 40 years

Blueboy1981 - don't worry about correcting your mistakes - by the time I had got to your third entry I, and I dare say many others, had lost interest.

He seems too similar to other players round him. Skuse, Douglas, Hyam all seem to be fighting to fulfil that "holding defensive midfielder" role. Play all 3 and they don't know where to play. I hope Hyam has a better season.

I thought MM was making a bit of progress this end of year, getting rid of some players. Should of let Hyam go, he would do better for a lower club of the league or league 1. For a midfielder he is not that great. Had high hopes for him when he first came through but as you will see in the stats below (not including sub appearances) not that great:

Hyam
114 appearances for Ipswich with 3 goals (1 goal per every 38 games)
119 appearances in total with 3 goals (1 goal per every 39.67 games)

Skuse
107 appearances for Ipswich with 1 goal (1 goal per every 107 games)
386 appearances in total with 10 goals (1 goal per every 38.6 games)

Coke
9 appearances for Ipswich with 0 goals
313 appearances in total with 31 goals (1 goal per every 10.1 games)

Douglas
23 appearances for Ipswich with 3 goals (1 goal per every 7.67 games)
473 appearances in total with 36 goals (1 goal per every 13.14 games)

These guys all play similar sort of roles (I think Coke is a bit more attack minded). Skuse has a worse ratio but at least he puts in solid performances. If we were to keep 2 for backup only, keep Skuse and Coke. Also at least when Douglas tries to end someone its an accident and he apolgises

trevski
good job on the stats. Bit deceiving though. Most of Coke's goals were fro Mansfield and Kingstonian and he hasn't got a goal or assist since 2011 when he scored a tap in for Bury so though I'd love to see him do well next season not that attack minded. The other stats are better as they represent time in the Championship and not in League 2/non-league football.

Thanks for doing the break down though. It's important to see this sometimes.

Well I like Hyam and if he could only calm down a bit and not keep getting booked I think he could be an asset.

On a separate note, Mick McCarthy has got a horse running at York today in the 2.40 by the looks of it! :-)

He has been injured a year, so he will come back strong and fit next season. Would be a mistake to let him go. Every team need a player like Hyam in the Championship. Exelent news :-)

Average / Poor player, bad attitude.

Cares more about social media, not the worst back up option though.

I really hope we introduce some new players in the transfer window, something to get us excited for the new season. I think Marcus Evans can trust Mick with the money, he pumped so much into the terrible Roy Keane era he's trying to gauge some of that money back.

I remember when Premier League teams were being linked with Hyam many seasons ago, whatever happened to him! Not my cup of tea, think we can do better. There is worse cover out there so if we can retain him on a cost-effective salary (that's easier said than done with modern football wages though!) might not be terrible thing but personally, I wouldn't have been sorry to see him go. We've arguably got enough side passers already! But if he's there just to provide back up, then I'm not going to lose any sleep over it. But if he was starting away at Carrot Road and got sent off in the first half, I would be losing some sleep!

but he really does need to shave the hair off
And please remind me, what school did he go to again lol? ;-)
& did he get a GCSE merit in side passing?

Pleased with this, but with a new improved contract, we should now rightly expect improved performances. I can't fault Hyam's dedication - he works hard in the gym and certainly runs around a lot, but he does now need to start investing a bit more time in the technical side of his game. I'd like nothing more than to see a team comprising of academy graduates, and I'm sure Hyam can be a part of that.

Didn't sign first contract as he got offered a part in Peaky Blinders.

why criticise a player for wanting to earn a good wage - we all try to maximise our salaries...
Ted Philips originally turned down Sir Alf as he was earning more as a gardener...and he turned out allright..

Give the lad a chance..

rickw - spot on! We have been saying the same for a couple of years now. He cannot do the job a Bishop/Bru can do but is perfectly good enough to be the ball winning midfielder to protect the back four.

Mick needs to play to their strengths and stop playing players out of position / in roles that don't suit them.

Kirbmeister ....... maybe you need a reminder - entitled to my opinion, just as you are yours.

Don't read my posts - your choice, I won't be losing sleep. Maybe I find yours as interested as a bee sting in the proverbial - I may just have a bit more decorum than some....... no names mentioned, or need to.
