Squad Return to Playford Road
Monday, 27th Jun 2016 11:20

The Town squad returned to Playford Road this morning to begin their preparations for their 2016/17 Championship campaign.

All the senior players were in for testing this morning with the exceptions of Daryl Murphy, whose 2015/16 season only came to a close yesterday when the Republic of Ireland were knocked out of the European Championships after losing 2-1 to hosts France, and Kevin Bru, who was away with Mauritius earlier in the month. The pair have been given additional time off.

Pre-season proper starts on Tuesday when the players will out on the training ground for the first time and manager Mick McCarthy will speak to the media.

The squad will head to the Carton House Hotel in Co Kildare, Ireland for the now annual training camp next week with their first pre-season friendly against Dublin side Shelbourne at their Tolka Park ground on Saturday 9th July (KO 3pm). Details of Town’s other pre-season fixtures can be found here.

The Championship season begins on Saturday 6th August when the Blues take on McCarthy's hometown club Barnsley, where he started his playing career, at Portman Road.

Some fresh faces would be quite nice earlier rather than later so we don't have the 'they've had no pre-season' excuse again.

Yeah, good to see us signing young players like Webster..2 or 3 more from leagues 1 & 2 (with a few seasons experience behind them) and i'll be very happy.

Good we have one new addition in; but with Tabb, Toure, Clarke, Frazer, Pringle, Yorwerth and Feeney all moving on, we are certainly shorter in terms of numbers. Certainly need to see around 4-5 new additions with midfield clearly the primary requirement.

Don't mean to be a pedant but Ireland didn't lose 1-0 to France, it was 2-1.

I've been really impressed with Jonny Williams for Wales at the Euros. Still has something to prove. Would love to see him join us this summer.

BringmeaKuqi ... on reflection I have also been impressed with Williams. I DID ask a question about how effective he was against England and stand corrected about his performance and I NEVER doubted his ability - just wonder what move will work for him so that he can REALLY kick start his career.

He would still be a GREAT signing for a championship club - and if he isn't going to be planing in the PL for Palace (why on earth isn't he ??) then why not at Town?

When we talk about the players who've left we should point out that we will hopefully have a better time with regard to injuries. A full season from Bishop and McGoldrick plus Dozzell might take the preassure off us and give us more forward looking options.

Agree that we have lost a lot of players this season as usual Jas;but don't feel we need as many replacements as you say, because thought squad was a bit too big last season.

Like you however would like to see a couple of replacements, and these should be marquee signings not players that other clubs don't want.

The rest of the squad should be promising youngsters from the youth team ie Emmanuel and Kenlock, who also wouldn't cost so much in wages.

With big clubs like Villa and Newcastle and their top managers think it will be harder than ever this season.

I think Williams is more suited to a continental style of football that he would have experienced at the Euros. Saw him play for MK Dons at Fulham at the end of last season and he didn't get a kick and was substituted half way through the 2nd half.

No Foley at training and Digby back at Barnsley training (looks like we are not in for him anymore)

(Old link but gives details)
Sounds like we may well get in that former trialist from Hitchin Town but that may be our deals done. We do have a number of youngsters eager and hungry for first team football and a fully fit and resurgent Giles Coke who will feel like a new signing. Think the Schindler rumours on the forum are turning out to be incorrect as he is on the point of joining Huddersfield.
Looking forward to the new season, but it will be really tough this year. A lot of class players now in this divisio.

We have a decent squad -But at the moment it's quite weak compared to half the league. I'm underwhelmed by the transfer activity and urgency in signing quality players in comparison to others. Someone please cheer me up and give me hope!

Don't get too excited - the squad is taking shape nicely .... !!!!

Or am I just dreaming - of what we should be doing by now.... ??

Keep coughing up mugs - nothing will change - and many of you know it.

So excited can't wait for new season and our mid table finish.
Spot on blue boy.

Webster aside; there should have been more transfer movement by now. I do feel we may have missed out on a few signings- Feeney, Payne etc and may already be moving to secondary targets. Kane Smith falls into that category as if we had been really interested we would have done something in February before his trials at Bradford and co. We were lucky they didn't offer him a deal.

Spot on blueboy and pip50. We can all pretend to be optimistic but the squad looks wafer thin. Couple of injuries and we will be in deep trouble.

Jas0999 another good post. We are low on numbers compared to many other squads. We do have Cameron Stewart back but our wings seem particularly weak. Douglas, Skuse, Hyam very similar players. Benyu, Patterson, Coke, Dozzell may get a lot of football this season.

We need another wonder-season from Bialkowski and Murphy to be back to his 2014-2015 form. We need Bishop, Sears and McGoldrick injury free. We need Pittman to catch fire and Knudsen to play like Mings or Cresswell. It's asking a great deal.

I worry that we'll bring in a couple of frees just before the start of the season yet again to fill up numbers (released players from Blackpool or something), and then expect these players to be superb when we play them.

Right now? 10th at best. 3 quality signings and we can make a play for top 6.

Elto ......... exactly - and the clocks ticking down................ to zero fast.

Needed to be more activity - and enthusiasm by now.

You know full well that some of you will accept anything, and make excuses for everything.

Nothing changes their either.
