McCarthy Among Managers Linked With Villa But Bruce Strong Favourite
Monday, 3rd Oct 2016 11:50

Town boss Mick McCarthy is among the managers being linked with the Aston Villa job following Roberto Di Matteo’s sacking earlier today, however, Steve Bruce, who left Hull City in the summer, is currently an odds-on favourite with some bookies.

McCarthy is around seventh or eighth favourite at around the 16/1 mark at the time of writing.

Di Matteo was dismissed by Villa after just 124 days, having won only once in his 11 Championship games in charge.

The Town boss was previously mentioned in connection with then-Premier League Villa in April when he admitted that the link was “flattering” and was coy when asked to rule himself out of the running.

McCarthy and his assistant Terry Connor signed new contracts with the Blues in January which run until the summer of 2018 with options for two further seasons.

The Town boss's deal also includes a buy-out clause, which he outlined in December last year.

“It’s a clause to buy me out and it’s pretty restrictive enough that nobody’s even going to bother [asking owner Marcus Evans],” he said.

Why Is it that us football fans who are a fraction what MM owes can see where Town are going wrong, I supposes that's what u get when you have s manager stuck in a time wrarp in the seventies and a owner who knows zero about the game

Having read the views of others I was surprised how varied they were. I used to be a fan of MM and even now I can still acknowledge that he has done a good job on very limited resources. My reasoning for wanting to see change is down to the mentality he has been coaching for the last twelve months. Players are been taught to avoid defeat at all costs. Certain players appear to be above criticism. Players are selected irrespective of their natural positions. Fringe players are only allowed game time if regulars are injured.
I genuinely believe that we have a number of young, talented and creative players at this club (many bought by Mick himself) that are having that ability coached out of them by negative methods.
Giving MM money is not the answer. You could buy Messi, Ronaldo and Bale, it would make little difference if they role in the team was to stop the opposition from scoring.
It's not necessarily a change of manager that's needed, but a less negative approach to the way the team is set up and coached.

Under the present managership and ownership the club is dyeing on its feet------just look at the crowds and listen to the conversation as you leave the game.

If people can not see the problems they are fooling themselves, but it is really happenning and has to be addressed soon.

40 million to mm would not get us promoted

Logically, why would Villa go for a manager who they would have to pay a very hefty compensation for when they could get another "free" manager for the price of his new contract only.

Isn't gonna happen is it with regard to Mick.

MM's Sunderland team and Wolves teams who won promotion did not play boring this hoof ball style.

I can't believe Mick tells them to do that, the same as when we get a free kick in the opposition half in a good position to get in the box and Skuse grabs the ball and takes a quick one backwards .... Mick goes mad on the touchline.

Trust me a lot of the blame has to go on the players here

They must be doing as he asks otherwise he'd drop them, surely? There are plenty of alternatives in our huge, but low quality, squad, even with the injuries we have.

Sick of hearing 'if he had money he would get us promoted' He is negative thinking and will never change. We have the personnel but he doesn't pick them...
If the players are not carrying out HIS orders on the pitch they would be dropped.

Dino out now.

Interesting reading the comments on when Mick and TC signed a new deal 10 months ago. Massive contrast to now and not a massive amount has changed except he's brought in a few new faces and we've lost Murphy

Not in a million years would they take him or he give up his job at ITFC Evans loves him he says the right things and doesn't give a t--s about the fans .
I can't think of a more arrogant manager he gets a fortune for boring us fans to death week in week out.

Pencilpete .... blame has to go on the players ? What the players MM has brought to the club , coached and play to his tactics every week over 4 seasons ? Bart not selected for many games last season costing points galore . Chambo played out of position , Smith played on the wrong side , Sears as a covering midfielder , Bishop played on the right when he can get a game , lining up with two or three defensive midfielders for home games who cannot create or score limiting our forward game and making us easy to defend against .
Wingers being told to tuck in and be defensive first . Players not improving but getting worse under MMs coaching ?
Being so stubborn in selection with the likes of Nouble , Tabb, Douglas playing badly repeatedly and constantly selected .
Letting in the same goals from corners over and over again
These things are the players fault ?
I personally think MM has cost us promotion by being so negative over last few seasons when the league was there for the taking and we had a striker having the season of his life , lack of foresight with such a small squad and insisting we could not get better etc and a few injuries and the wheels fell off
As I have said before we wont go up with this squad and I personally don't think we will go down so play the youngsters , build a team around a playmaker with a game plan and play some passing football rather than just stopping the opposition and offering absolutely nothing going forward

In light of your previous posts Pencil i'm not sure where you stand but IF the players on the pitch aren't following orders then why on earth is he continuing to pick them? I get it that he's experienced and has had success as well as getting us up the league BUT his post match comments don't then tally with his touchline gestures.
Time and time again he's gone with defensive formations, players out of position and poor subs. So I don't get it while fans are voting with their feet and it can't go on.
The test will come when all injuries are cleared up and we'll see what his teamsheet looks like. I'm not holding my breath, just hoping we got it wrong!

What he has done in the past to save us is not in question. The fact we have been in or around the Play Offs isnt in question. The problem is his inflexibility and stubborness when it comes to certain players "Dougie" !! There is a team of talented young footballers in that squad who cannot make an impact because that lumbering bearded carthorse ...and until that changes we havent a hope in hell!!!
Ps the ability to kick the ball into your own face as per saturday isnt what we need as an "attacking threat" Thanks Dougie !!!

If Villa are worried about relegation they might take Mick.
If Villa want promotion they won't.

Mick must be the most predictable manager in the league. He plays the same team every week, same formaition, same tactics( spoil the opposition) even in general the same substitutions in the same minutes is bringing off Bru/Best etc.
If we can see this obviously the opposition can !
I have defended Mick in the past, but can't take any more of his terrible style of play.
Time for change NOW.(Before we find ourselves playing Rochdale next season )

This is getting like that very old joke about the kid in Jockland who every Saturday would listen to Saturdays results on the radio. He grew up thinking his local team was called Patrick Thistle Nil

grumpyoldman added 18:29 - Oct 3
Pencil Pete, what you forgot to mention is MM continued use of players out of position and out of form, it's ok saying he is not happy when Scuse keeps taking quick free kicks, but who continues to pick Scuse? If a player was not doing what he is told the ultimate sanction is with the manager, he has options but refuses to change.
