McCarthy Among Managers Linked With Villa But Bruce Strong Favourite
Monday, 3rd Oct 2016 11:50

Town boss Mick McCarthy is among the managers being linked with the Aston Villa job following Roberto Di Matteo’s sacking earlier today, however, Steve Bruce, who left Hull City in the summer, is currently an odds-on favourite with some bookies.

McCarthy is around seventh or eighth favourite at around the 16/1 mark at the time of writing.

Di Matteo was dismissed by Villa after just 124 days, having won only once in his 11 Championship games in charge.

The Town boss was previously mentioned in connection with then-Premier League Villa in April when he admitted that the link was “flattering” and was coy when asked to rule himself out of the running.

McCarthy and his assistant Terry Connor signed new contracts with the Blues in January which run until the summer of 2018 with options for two further seasons.

The Town boss's deal also includes a buy-out clause, which he outlined in December last year.

“It’s a clause to buy me out and it’s pretty restrictive enough that nobody’s even going to bother [asking owner Marcus Evans],” he said.

He didnt save us.
It was new manager syndrome, and players realizing what was in store if they didnt get their fingers out. Stop bigging him up as somebody he's never been or never will be.

Maybe the club should contact villa and let them know we are willing to let McCarthy go with out having to pay compensation, plus they can have chambers club captain too thrown in!

Surely Villa can't be that stupid can they? Mind you they did sack an excellent manager in Tin Sherwood who would be an excellent fit at Portman Road

Brilliant post prebs007. I would have given you at least 3 pluses if the website had allowed it. Well done.

If MM goes how about a managerial team of Butcher and Osman? Ex players who know the Town way.

tractorkent, my heart says yes but my head says no. Terry is great true blue who has been one of our very best players ever, however so far his managerial record has not been as impressive.
I think we need someone younger but with links to our club, how about Matt Holland?

Small anecdote for you all..

I was at a charity golf day a couple of weeks ago and got chatting to Tony Cottee. He said the Sky Sports reporters hate getting sent to cover our games as they know the football on offer will be so poor.

Not a great surprise but still a sad indictment of our standards recently. I did point out at least he was being paid to watch the games!!

I would like to have seen Mick being given a similar amount of money to Keane, Jewell and some of the other managers in this league. With what he has had we have seen 'budget football' and the only surprise to me is how well we have done the past two seasons. My major regret is that MM was not given money in January transfer windows for a final push. In January 2015 a decent spend could have seen us finish in the top two. This january it could have seen us in the top six. As MM does not control the purse strings I think he is doing the best with what he has and playing a style that suits his 'budget' squad. Lets look forward to Williams, McGoldrick and Bishop returning and see where we are at Xmas.......

Football Buffs particularly into everything managerial, should check out the fairly informative site "The Sack Race". Here you find a variety of cooool things like Power Ranking, various betting odds , insider rumors, managerial profiles and of course a listing of all league club managers in England who already have gotten 'The Boot' -- i.e. dramatically called "Casualties" here -- DURING this still early 2016-2017 season (currently the tally is 7 I gather excl. Bruce + Allardyce who of course decided to quit their respective league-clubs themselves during the preseason)
.... Also found there and of potential specific interest to die-hard ITFC fans is the fact that our under fire Mick 'The Dinosaur' McCarthy actually is the manager who has been with a team CURRENTLY playing in The Championship for the longest period of time, with his 3 years 11 months 1 day .... thus beating out Simon Grayson who has been with Preston for 3 years 7 months 15 days. Hmmmm I wonder whether this really tells anything useful about the current 'State of Affairs' at ITFC ???.... as in whether it tells MORE about the complacency of ITFCs football-clueless & tax-benefit fixated current owner than it tells about The Dinosaur's aptitude / inaptitude as a Championship manager IN THIS DAY AND AGE (thus excluding all his aweZzzzome former merits from days past!!!)???

Brownie ! mentioned Tony Cottee, in his forum,, well he was at the game on Saturday, and he could not understand why MM still keeps choosing Douglas and Skuse in midfield, and he was speaking to a journalist friend of mine !!!
I would like to see the fans choose the next team ??? but that will never happen while MM. is at the Helm

Brittiniaman I agree with fans input but my own view is ME sack

The real problem is that the club's definition of ambition is 'getting into the play-offs' which, to me, reflects the gradual decline in status of ITFC since ME took over. It seems that the owner is content to sit in The Championship hoping that we will one day get lucky. All the while, the quality and spending power of clubs around us increases year by year.

You can complain about MM (who has the best win rate since Joe Royle), but any other manager would be bound by the same constraints. We simply need more investment.

@brittaniaman quite possibly the most ridiculous comment ever. No matter who is the manager in charge they wouldn't let the fans choose the team. We all have our preferred line ups but if the managers actually started choosing a team purely based on fans opinions I would be very worried indeed!

What is the massive injury list people keep making excuses about? Didz and Williams will always be injured. Mick's decision to sign Williams. Pitman - big deal. Rest are defenders so no great impact on our problem areas. We have Bishop, Grant, Ward and Lawrence. Just give them all a game and drop the boring favourites.

I know that was a stupid comment miles but it was only said in jest !!!!!!!!!!
Purely just annoyed that MM will just keep picking his Favourites whatever form they are in and it is doing the club no favours ????

Surely even MM can see that his tacticszzzzzzz and selection is not working. So why keep trying and failing. If you fall and it doesn't hurt you don't keep doing it till it does. I'm not a wannabe Championship manager but used to coach and would never have considered picking the same team week in week out if it wasn't getting us anywhere.

I don't understand why he thinks that the midfield he opts for every week is working. It's the rest why we're not scoring goals. No winger getting the ball. No through balls 🏀 to Freddie Sears. No balls forward from midfield. Best and Ward are winning every header but no one there to pick it up and they're most likely to be subbed at 70 minute. Why can't we sub the midfield and be more creative. Put Webster Digby on instead they can't be any worse than the current irreplaceable options. You never know we might score goals and win a match.

Damn just woke up from my dream.

Like most wish McCarthy would go to Villa,or anywhere else for that matter.

When Evans gave them this long contract Town were in the play off places.I wonder if he is regretting this now, because since then performances have declined, and of course the league position which is now similar to the Keane/Jewell position.ITFC have only been in the top 6 once since, and that was after the first game against Barnsley.

Even now the arrogant dinosaur still talks about his CV and thinks other people have a high opinion of him,and having a release clause in his contract shows me that he doesn't really gives a toss about this club, and especially our fans who he privately thinks are a lot of carrot crunchers.

I hope that even if he doesn't go to Villa(unlikely),that some other club who are in trouble would try and get him;as fear this is the only way we are likely to get rid.

Dear Pencil Pete. Mr McCarthy by now I am certain has realised how much lack of adventure he has in his game. Definitely a lower tier manager for the grit and grind he plays. Don't be under the suspicion of him not getting support. Always been there. The weekly payroll is just below the top teams in the league.

The other major problem is Mr Evans being on the same thinking. Not bold. Just tinkering doesn't get it done.

These 'Mick Out' and 'I'll drive him there!' comments are ridiculous! The only man to blame is the fraudster with the padlock on his wallet.

You invalids will only realise this once Big Mick goes to a club who are willing to invest and he will work wonders with any club
