Patterson Nets First International Goal
Wednesday, 12th Oct 2016 09:13

Town youngster Monty Patterson scored his first international goal as New Zealand ended their USA tour with a 1-1 draw with the hosts in Washington DC overnight.

The 19-year-old, who played the full 90 minutes partnering ex-Blues loanee Chris Wood up front as he won his seventh full cap, netted in the 72nd minute, Julian Green having put the USA in front on 27.

Patterson, who can also operate in midfield, was delighted to open his senior international goals account.

“It was just an unreal feeling scoring my first goal for the All Whites, just really happy,” he said.

“I think we worked really hard and we had few chances in the first half. Obviously they scored but we always knew there were going to be chances there for us as long as we took one, which we did, which was good.”

Patterson, who joined the Town academy as a scholar in the summer of 2014 and signed a one-year professional deal in the close season, said he enjoyed playing alongside Wood.

“I loved it because Woodsy’s a great player and I just feel honoured every time I represent my country,” he added.

Patterson, who was booked in the 84th minute, previously came on as a sub in Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to Mexico in Nashville.

The Auckland-born youngster, who won his first senior caps in the summer when he helped New Zealand to win the Oceania Nations Cup in Papua New Guinea, missed much of last season after suffering a serious ankle injury.

Speaking last week, manager Mick McCarthy said he is pleased with Patterson's current progress but that he’s not yet in his thoughts for the senior side.

“He’s doing all right at U23s level, he’s doing fine, but he’s not pushing to get a position in front of the other lads at the moment,” he said.

Another former Town loanee, Rory Fallon, these days playing with Truro City in the Vanarama National League South, was an unused sub for the All Whites.

Meanwhile, Christophe Berra was an unused sub as Scotland were beaten 3-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Slovakia last night.

Surely this lad should be on the bench and getting a few minutes on the pitch, but we know with this manager young players or flair players are stifled.

Some fans have to put a negative spin on a positive story.
Yes, Mick deserves some criticism, but now some fans are nitpicking on every topic. Sears, Pitman, Best and I would even say Morris and probably McLoughlin are ahead of Patterson.
Great finish by Monty and I hope to see him in and around the first team during the season.

I do think he should be getting game time ahead of Varney at least. I like Varney he really does work hard but we need to give youth a go.

He's behind other youngsters at the moment so isn't anywhere near ready for the first team yet. Delighted for him to open up his NZ account and I do hope he kicks on and in the next few years we see him scoring in a town shirt

True Blueswede but it is hard not to knock Mick these days when he says thinks like midfield has been playing well,or something simlar. Did we play Dozzel last year just to get him to sign a new contract? Not seen him this season. If we had used him at least some of the games this season would we be in a worse position? I doubt it.

Mick McCarthy said he is pleased with Patterson's current progress but that he's not yet in his thoughts for the senior side - well he damn well should be. He has to better than Scuse Douglas and one or two others. Either he is the future or he's not. If not move him on.

First team goal drought, midfield useless;but our esteemed Manager considers he is just ok for the under 23's.

Wonder if scoring against the USA will change his mind.Answer NO

Interesting that given an opportunity Monty Patterson makes his mark, playing 20 mins against minno's Mexico! and a full game against little old USA! only 22nd in the world, yet not good enough for even a bench spot for his club. Tells you a lot about who is running the club and his inability to play talented players over tired second rate freebees etc, just in case he might lose a couple of games. He will be gone soon in my opinion and he can take his outdated tactics and stupid 'Bonkers' comments with him!

Never seen Monty play or young Morris for that matter but I do think we could give the young players a chance.
We need balance I agree but youth has no fear. I don't advocate half a dozen at the same time but until they get a chance how will we know.
Let's get some game time for Patterson,Dozell,Bish,Emmanuel,McDonnell, Morris etc.

Come on Mick give them a go. Can they do any worse?

I agree with Akaroablue well said that manager of ours is a disgrace noticed there is a lot of Chapionship games on sky in December not showing the Town no one wants to see a boring football team Patterson can play for his Country and not his club .Very very sad indeed please MM `do the decent thing and resign
