Webster: Frustrating Result
Monday, 5th Dec 2016 06:00

Frustration was the overriding feeling for Blues defender Adam Webster following Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at Bristol City, a game in which he believed there was little between the sides.

Lee Tomlin netted a 31st minute penalty and Luke Freeman sealed the three points for the Robins with a superb volley 18 minutes from time. David McGoldrick came closest to scoring for the Blues when Robins keeper Frank Fielding tipped his shot on to the post 10 minutes after half-time.

“It was frustrating, we’re all frustrated at the result,” Webster said. “There wasn’t too much in the game.

“The ref’s given them a penalty which was a bit soft and then obviously there was the wonder strike which killed our momentum a bit. But there are positives to be taken and we’ll take them into next week’s game.”

As is so often the case in the Championship a close game was turned on a couple of incidents.

“Whoever can get that extra step or that bit of luck can come out on top, and that’s what happened today,” Webster continued. “As I say, it’s frustrating."

The result saw the Blues, who are still to win back-to-back games this season, drop to 16th, five points ahead of third-bottom Cardiff, who visit Portman Road next Saturday, but also only seven from the top six, which Webster says illustrates the tightness of the Championship.

“Everyone beats everyone in this league, it’s not just us,” he said. “Teams up and down the league will be feeling exactly the same as we are at the minute. Fine margins in games can help you win games.”

He added: “It’s very up and down, there’s so much quality in the league. There’s a difficult fixture every week, we know that. We’ll be doing everything we can this week in preparation for next Saturday.

“Next week’s a massive game for us, so we need [the fans] behind us and hopefully we can get three points.”

Despite the disappointment of results such as Saturday’s, Webster says he’s settled into life in the Championship having moved up from League Two when he joined the Blues from Portsmouth in the summer.

“I’m loving every minute of it, obviously it’s a big step up but I’m really enjoying it and I just want to kick on from here,” he said.

The former England U18 and U19 international missed the Nottingham Forest game last month with a hamstring strain, one of a couple of minor injuries he has suffered this season, but says he’s now fully over the problem.

“It’s all good now, touch wood. It’s been a bit frustrating, a couple of little niggles, but hopefully that’s behind me now and I can really kick on.”

Meanwhile, Town’s U23s are in Premier League Cup action against Huddersfield at Portman Road this evening (KO 7pm). Striker Brett Pitman is expected to be involved as he continues his comeback from his ankle injury.

The Blues’ U18s, who face Nottingham Forest in the FA Youth Cup at the City Ground on Tuesday evening, were beaten 1-0 at Watford on Saturday morning.

Elsewhere, former Blues midfielder Andy Drury, 33, has rejoined his former club Ebbsfleet after having his Eastleigh contract terminated by mutual consent.

Ex-Blues striker Ronan Murray has signed for Galway United back in his native Republic of Ireland having left Notts County in the summer.

The 25-year-old is reunited with his former Blues academy team-mate David Cawley, who joined the Tribesmen from St Patrick's Athletic earlier in the week.

Former Town midfielder Geraint Williams has left his role coaching the Wales U21, U19 and U17 squads with his contract, which ended last Wednesday, not having been renewed. Williams, 54, had been in the position since 2012.

Well its Websters turn this week one off three players who can hold their heads up after Saturdays Dismal performance caused mainly by poor selection and tactics yet again by McCarthy, i am not to confident of getting anything v Cardiff with present personal and tactics employed by a manager who seems void of any modern football brain.

Wheel out one of the best players to justify the unjustifiable and don't mention our horrendous manager.
Isn't TWTD becoming a bit complicient in this nonsense?

McCarthy OUT

I like Webster, think he's been a breath of fresh air in a very stagnant season, my understanding was that he was one of only 2 or 3 players to come out of Saturdays game with some credit, however, this smacks of the PR spin machine being at work, put forward a young lad, who's been playing well, the fans like him, to defend the indefensible.

However, I believe you make your own luck/chances by being positive, (like Bristol did) whilst McCarthy insists on playing Skuse & "Dougie" we are sitting ducks to an attack minded team, playing these two together means we have 7 players of our 11 in a defensive role, hence why we struggle to create very much, unless we are playing a similarly defensive unit that fail to create much (like QPR), it's no wonder we've only scored 17 goals this season, poor Ward, McGoldrick, Sears, Lawrence, etc.... are ending up attacking with little or no support, our 4 attacking players are effectively having to break down 6 or 7 opposing players to create anything.

If only McCarthy could be persuaded to loosen the defensive shackles & "Go for the win" game in game out we would see an immediate improvement, but I won't hold my breath!!

A good signing by town shows what a small fee can get you from the lower leagues the Varneys/Bests etc are a waste of money, we need a central midfielder in the lee Tomlin mould and a striker with something to prove to change present circumstances.

Makes a change for someone who puts in a decent shift to come on here even though it's the same old story, I notice all Micks under performing buddies are keeping quiet!! Skuse must have worn his pen out last week

Don't worry Adam, you'll be long gone from this shambles come the end of the season. Playing football under a manager who will encourage a passing game.

As Webster's stated here, the next game is massive. We are in a relegation battle and the sooner we realise that the better. Every fan needs to be behind the team on a Saturday, as it's a monumental game.

Arrghh! This week the 'Bad Luck of the Draw' fell on the good Mr. Webster I see ..... Poor bloke! .... Sincerely hope the dreaded *Sortition Process* of this here ultra PATHETIC "Mick McCarthy & Ian Milne's Weekly Public Relation Stunt" (among the hapless players at ITFC) at least is a little more hmmm 'subtle' than the ones Monty Python tries out here in their immaculate "YPRES 1914: THE SHORT STRAW" sketch:

:-) lol

Websters turn to tell us whatever Mick has written on the bit of paper in front of him. He has been one of our better players this season, would be much better under a different manager.

Mick out!

What was really frustrating is I watched MOTD 2 last night and a player Evans could have chucked two or three million at, Ryan Fraser, was undoubtedly the game changer for Bournemouth.

Whatever we think about Mick, his tactics, his favourites' comments after the match, his inflammatory statements before the match, his tactics, his style of football - the real worry here is his relationship with Evans and the lack of interest in our football club.

We're slowly stagnating and I fear what state ITFC will be in before something eventually changes.

Now very time I log on here I hope to read that MM has resigned or been sacked, but instead read some PR stunt of an article like this orchestrated by I don't know who!

battyblue: "MM is devoid of a modern football brain". Did the managers of the Premier League and FA Cup winners last season have modern football brains (both aged 65), or the manager of the Euro winners (age 62), or the manager who started Spain's dominance of world football (Arragones aged 67) or his successor Del Bosque (age 65). I sense a lot of ageism in some of the comments on this site. The stats will tell you that young managers are far less successful that experienced ones.

One thing all top managers have in common, they find a way to make best use of their resources as MM has done and if he departs, he will find other championship clubs very happy to take him. If he leaves, dont bet on him not returning to Portman Road and winning.

The manner in which Mings/Webster have developed under him has suggested that MM will allow them play and if he had the resources to match his competitors, I have no doubt the quality of play would improve. In the meantime, would supporters be happy to play nice football in League 1 or 2?

Trying to stick to the subject Webster has indeed been a positive and along with the continued good performances from Bart in goal, the only positives so far this season.
I just hope we actually hang on to Webster unlike other past promising talents such as Mings and dare I say it Rhodes.

Off subject I share Count Arthur's thoughts around the relationship between manager and owner.
McCarthy has said on numerous times his relationship with the owner is good. But between the pair of them where is there any ambition?
From the outside it looks to me as though our owner now thinks he cannot compete with the big guns which could be true given the gulf between the premier and the rest and we have a manager who is at the tail end of his career just plodding along with no invention. All of which makes for little excitement.

Good point count arthur. I was the Liverpool game yesterday and Ryan Fraser was brilliant in an around 30ish min cameo. Showed exactly what we are missing.

Webster is our best defender by far and has been a great acquisition so well done MM, but this does not let you off the hook.
Your team selection, tactics, and substitutions have been unbelievable at times. You have played players out of position on a regular basis, and also stayed loyal to some in the team who have been to put it politely horrendous.
The midfield is never set up to attack but defend only, thus leaving the strikers isolated and left to chase back to get the ball.
I was at the Bristol game and believe you me we were awful with not a clue what to do and some players seem void of any idea and lacked confidence.
You say in your post match interview"we must give credit to Bristol" Well what does that say about us.!
This team has no consistency whatsoever.Good players look drained of confidence and lost.
To me MM you have now gone as far as you can and just seem to struggle on from week to week making stupid statements after every match.
Time to go now now PLEASE.

Us fans do get behind the team Webster but it's real hard with the way we play.
It will be no more than a mid table finish this season if we keep MM in charge.
Draw at the most on sat

please mick I'm begging you just get out of our club. You are literally dragging us further and further backwards. Ow and it has to stop you have to go.
You are arrogant beyond belief and the football you serve up is dire.

I appreciate you have done some good things and for those I thank you. But your time is up and I think you know it. Dragging out the inevitable will only take the club further backwards and damage your reputation further. I'm sure you could walk into another championship job right now. Please do the right thing and leave!!

I was at the match last Saturday and it takes a fair bit to get me angry, but after a long drive down there with my two grandsons both looking forward to watch there Team play well and possibly win.
Well the eneviable happened,we were outplayed but a team not much better than us.Even my grandsons could not believe how negative we were.
A wasted journey,a great expensive and nothing whatsoever to be even the slightest bit pleased about.
After about nearly 50 years of supporting my club I have now become totally disalusioned with the way the club is run and the direction we are heading under MM.
I really do feel now that it is time for change.

Count arthur, 2-3million wouldn't have got Ryan Fraser even at the start of last season.
He was highly rated by Howe, young and destined for the first team.
They would have laughed at you almost as much as I am.
