McCarthy: Jonny's Had Such Bad Luck
Thursday, 6th Apr 2017 19:55

Town boss Mick McCarthy says he’d like to see Jonny Williams in action before the end of the season with the Wales international having been limited to just one start and seven sub appearances during his latest loan spell at Portman Road.

The 23-year-old, who has another year left on his contract with parent club Crystal Palace, joined the Blues on a season-long loan in August suffering from an ankle problem with an agreement in place that Town wouldn’t contribute to his wages while he was out injured.

Williams got back to action in October but suffered a shoulder injury when making the first start of his fourth spell with the Blues in the 3-2 win at Wigan in December.

A minor hamstring problem and then illness prevented him from returning to the first-team squad until Tuesday’s game against Wigan when he was an unused sub.

Asked whether Williams is someone who might come into his thoughts for a longer term role at the club, McCarthy said: “I’d like to look at him short term and find out whether he’s going to play and be involved and be durable.

“I thought he did well in his cameo appearance at Wigan, what he did. But he’s had terrible injuries, really bad luck.

“And not only here, by the way, other places. Just because he’s brave on the ball and he gets it people kick him and dump him on his bum or on his shoulder, as the case may be.”

It is such a shame, but we signed Williams when he was injured. I still can't understand that. It was a punt but a poor one. Sadly, Williams is injury prone.

You could have had, 'a look at him', earlier in the season, but you left him out in preference to Dougie, et. al.

Jeez!

Only in his time with us. He managed to play 25 games combined for Forest and MK Dons with no problems, as many as he's played for us in multiple spells over multiple seasons.

Maybe that's a result of getting strength and conditioning coaches on the minimum wage.

I have a feeling that Jonny will end up at town during this summer. Surprised we kept him at the club during his injury so maybe it was done for a reason as MM said. Lovely player, rubbish injury record.

Jonny really needs to start playing somewhere (he won't get much game time at Palace) but with a year left on his contract at £1m a year or so hard to see us affording him, while a permanent signing would be hugely risky given his injury record.

Is he not on play related payments ? Was signed to shut up supporters about the lack of activity in summer window .
Could have been selected earlier in season when he was saying he was fit but we didn't as it would cost

But it is mostly here. Played most of last season at two clubs without an issue. Anyway when he was fit he could not get a game in front of Douglas!!

It is cruelly bad luck but the more knocks the body takes the less resilient it becomes. However his injury record makes it less likely that he will have a future at CP or any other top league club. We on the other hand will always have a place for footballers like JW and we must be in a good place to sign him permanently. In my view it would be a good punt even if we can't expect an injury free season.

Your right Blue041273, we do seem to always have a place for players like Williams. In fact these others have had long injury periods at our club too, is it bad luck or bad regime of training/playing? Webster, Smith, Taylor, Bishop, Hyham, Best, Coke. Now Knudsen has injured his shoulder. Have I missed anyone? I don't think you can put it all down to bad luck. Some players we signed on the back of poor injury records but were still keen to bring them in because they were no doubt cheap. Training and playing at ITFC needs to be looked into, too many strains and pulls!! You get what you pay for as the saying goes. Over to you ME, cheap skate! Unfortunately when we buy from ME we don't get what we pay for. Something needs to change for next season.
