Waghorn Still Expected to Be at Town Open Day
Wednesday, 25th Jul 2018 11:50

Town striker Martyn Waghorn is still expected to be at the Blues’ Open Day on Thursday despite Derby County being in talks regarding a move for the 28-year-old frontman, who was an unused sub in last night’s 1-0 friendly win at the MK Dons.

Last night, the Rams were reported to be in advanced discussions regarding an £8 million approach for Waghorn. TWTD first revealed the Rams' interest in Waghorn a fortnight ago.

Contrary to reports last night we understand Waghorn hasn't asked the Blues for a transfer in the wake of the East Midlanders' interest.

We understand the deal is still some way from being done with negotiations ongoing and Waghorn currently set to join the rest of the squad at the Open Day and for the annual photo call earlier tomorrow morning.

According to the Derby Telegraph, the £8 million fee is likely to involve a number of clauses - later reports elsewhere cite the initial figure as £5 million - while the Rams would have to move other players on in order to do the deal, Matej Vydra having been linked with an £11 million switch to Leeds.

Town owner Marcus Evans, who like manager Paul Hurst would like Waghorn to stay at Portman Road, is understood to want a fee which would include a significant initial payment in order to allow Hurst to rebuild his squad rather than a deal weighted towards clauses and further cash later along down the line.

Sheffield United have ruled themselves out of the running for the striker, who scored 16 goals and recorded 11 assists last season having joined the Blues from Rangers for a bargain £250,000, while Middlesbrough are also keen. Birmingham City have also been keeping tabs and Nottingham Forest have also been linked.

Waghorn is effectively contracted to the Blues for two years with his deal up next summer as it stands but with the club having an option for another season.

In a separate move not thought to impact upon their approach for Waghorn, Derby are close to signing ex-Town striker Jack Marriott from Peterborough.

@finidi my sister knows Waghorn's wife and according to her the whole family are well settled here and very happy.

a few extra quid always nice I suppose. We won't offer it, so it's a goodbye from me

What does "effectively" signed to town mean? I have been fortunate enough to have met and spoke to Wagy fairly recently, he is a good guy, speaks genuinely about the club and his family in the area...i did doubt the report he asked for a transfer...that is not the type of guy i have met.

If Waggy does go for £8mil would love to see a bid of £5mil to bring Marriott back home!

Feels like Waggy & his family are happy here.

Even if we accept a bid of 8ml he might not want to leave anyway

Who knows what will happen but we will get replacement in before he is allowed to go

Effectively means there is us a clause fornthe years extension so how contracts runs out next summer but if town activate it he is automatically signed to what would then be a yr long contract

SkySports are saying that Derby have had a bid accepted for Marriott. I understand he scored a fair amount of goals last season but I don't think he has the overall quality to succeed at a club like that.
They are also saying that the initial fee for Waghorn is 4m, rising to 8m if they get promoted. Although they have been wrong on a few Ipswich stories this summer...

I've just this read elsewhere.

"£4m for Waghorn and a further £4m if they [Derby] can claim promotion".

I sure hope we haven't turned down £5mil from Sheff Utd only to accept a likely 4m elsewhere. That would be a joke.

WAGHORN DEAL WAITS ON VYDRA
And a bit more Derby news as we understand their pursuit of Ipswich striker Martyn Waghorn is progressing.
However, it may only proceed if Derby can complete the sale of Matej Vydra to Leeds United.
Waghorn would cost Derby an initial £4m fee, with that figure doubling if the striker helps Derby win promotion to the Premier League.
Derby are wary of Financial Fair Play restrictions, and so are reluctant to complete the deal for Waghorn until they have offloaded Vydra.
There is the broad agreement between Derby and Leeds, though Vydra's personal terms are still being discussed.

This has got to be a joke surely "Waghorn would cost Derby an initial £4m fee, with that figure doubling if the striker helps Derby win promotion to the Premier League" why don't we tell them to stick it and keep him so we can get promoted instead, cheeky sods

Derby already have seven strikers in their first team squad, soon to be eight if Marriott signs! Just greedy lol!

so Derby pay us an extra 4 million if WE help THEM get promoted, mmmmmmmmmm, Remind me how long we have been stranded in the Championship .

Okay. But if he does eventually move on, it needs to happen sooner rather than later. We don't want another Murphy situation. We need time to spend any fee received.

It's been said he's asked for transfer so sorry why do we keep a player that wants out?

on sky sports it says Derby have had a bid accepted for our old gem Marriott from Peterborough for 3 million raising to 5 . Perhaps this will stop the persue of Waggy .

how about Derby give us £8 million and we give them £4 million back if we get promoted ;)

Ironic that we play West Ham Saturday in the same week that Derby look to sign Jack Marriott when it was against West Ham we saw Jack Marriott for one of the first times when he looked quality and tore James Collins apart. How many times do we give decent players away and then also sell decent players for good money and never see decent money spent! We need more numbers and more quality players who have experience at doing well in our league. Few exciting signing so far, more to come please.

So Jack Marriott is set to sign for Derby in a deal worth 5 million. And the latest news on sky is that the Waghorn deal is worth 4 million plus 4 million if derby get promoted. Unlikely they will go up so 4 million then. All sounds a little less appealing if you ask me.

I think it's about time this club stopped other clubs taking the pee. We want your striker so we can get promoted whilst you stay where you are and if we don't you don't get the extra 4m. Are they for real come on Marcus grow a pair and tell them where to go. So have they also approached the player without town's consent as well? Whole thing is an absolute joke. About time we held our own and be big again.

How can Derby spend and spend with apparently no FFP whatsoever?

If they don't pay up and quickly so we can buy ourselves they can sod off.

About time we said no although I bet we cave in, ME likes counting money but not spending it.

I don't think this will happen, sounds like ME is standing his ground which is good, we are still a player or 3 short but I'm happy to start the season with what we have got if necessary.Derby might spend big but they are still in the same league ....it isn't just about money!!!
