Humphreys: It Means the World to Me
Wednesday, 26th Oct 2022 14:27

Blues youngster Cameron Humphreys says his goalscoring full league debut for the club at Port Vale last night meant the world to him having joined the academy as an U8.

The 18-year-old netted a stunning strike to give Town a 2-0 lead in a game they ultimately won 3-2.

“It was a really good night, we got the three points and on a personal note, I’m very happy,” he told iFollow Ipswich.

“There’s bits where I can improve. Especially in the build-up, I could’ve been cleaner and better.

“In those times, I could be braver and play even more but there was a lot of bits I was happy with as well.

“I competed well and was good on second balls which is something I’ve tried to develop this year.

“It means the world to me. I’ve been at the club for many years and the reaction of the players and especially the travelling fans; the scenes were really pleasing for me.

“It’s a long way to come on a cold Tuesday night but they came in their numbers and sang all game.”

Regarding the goal, he added: “It was just instinctive. Dom [Ball] has just flicked it away from the defender, I’ve come onto it and have just struck it sweetly. I don’t know if I’ve hit a ball that sweetly before, so what a time to do it!

“It went perfectly through the bodies and in. I’m going to try and claim the assist for the third even though there were a few ricochets, too!

“It was a great pass from Leif [Davis] to put me in and I saw Freddie [Ladapo] at the back post. I don’t know how it got to him but we’ll take it!”

Meanwhile, Vale winger David Worrall felt his team could take pride from their performance against a Blues side he believes is the best in the division.

“We gave it everything, it just wasn’t to be,” he told his club’s website. “We came up against one of the best squads in the league with Championship players and we went toe-to-toe with them and caused them a lot of problems.

“We won the battle, got our game plan spot on, it just wasn’t enough. We are close to winning those games and getting something out of the games against the best teams in the league.

“Our record of coming back in games speaks for itself and that will continue with the changing room we have and the characters we have in the team.

“The staff won’t let that go away and the experienced lads, the leaders in the team carry that through.

“We are at home against the best team in the league, why not go for it? We will worry later in the season about seeing games out for a draw — I think it was there for us to take the three points, we had every right to go for it and we did, but you play against teams like that, they get a chance and they score.

“We have to take huge confidence; we are all hurt but we went toe-to-toe with the best [in the league] and we took them all the way.

“I am immensely proud of every single one of them lads after tonight and it just shows the different side to us; we turned it up a few gears tonight and you saw that on the pitch. It was entertaining for people watching and every single one of us can come away with our head held high.”

So pleased for the lad, finally getting his reward for all his hard work and for showing some loyalty to the club. Let that be a lesson to some of the others who thought the grass would be greener elsewhere (only to be virtually never heard of again!)

I thought on a side note the Vale commentators were excellent ,honest truthful and without "home side tinted glasses on".

This young man could go all the way a very cultured passing game and took his kicks without disappearing out of the game. We always looked like we had an extra gear if needed.

Good away win. Charlton will be another ball game.
