Burns Left Out of Wales Squad
Wednesday, 9th Nov 2022 19:08

Town wideman Wes Burns has missed out on a place in the Wales squad for the World Cup in Qatar.

The 26-man squad was announced this evening with Burns among those not making the cut.

Former Town striker Kieffer Moore, ex-loanee Jonny Williams and Brennan Johnson, the son of former Blues frontman David, are all included.

Wales are in Group B along with England, Iran and the USA, who they play in their first match on Monday 21st November.

Burns, 27, broke into his national team in the summer when he won his first three full caps.

The winger was subsequently called up to the party for the September internationals but didn’t play a minute of those games, although he felt the experience was worthwhile.

Speaking after Monday's 3-0 win at Bracknell, Burns said he had no clue whether he'd be named or otherwise but if he wasn't he knew he'd have work to do at Portman Road.

“I’d love to go, honestly I would, I’d love to go,” Burns said. “If I get the call, brilliant. If I don’t, I know I’ve got a big season here at Ipswich.

“I think we’ve said it many times, the aim at the end of the season is for Ipswich to be in the Championship, be playing Championship football next year, so it’s a win for me either way. If I go, brilliant, if I don’t, then I know I’ve got a job to do here.”

I am gutted for Wes but certainly a booster for us. Wes will no doubt show them what they are missing out on!

Even though I'm an English guy living in Wales they'll still have far too much for the overhyped pitiful England side. It comes as no surprise that Wes isn't included. He'd have enjoyed the experience no doubt, but would have got no game time, and obviously from a selfish point of view it's good for us.

Lol. How much can I have on England at even money then CB if you're so convinced that a squad that Johnny Williams can make will beat England 😂

Really sorry for you Wes but keep that chin up, fight like hell for the Town and carry on playing the best you can and you will be wearing red again before you know it.

Chepstow are you sure you are not a sheep shaggr
England will roll over Wales no problem, half of their squad are not fit, including someone that is overhyped Gareth Bale.
As for leaving Wes out for Allen who has been injured since early season is pretty laughable.
Wales loss our gain!

Tough in Wes but hopefully he'll get another chance when we're flying high in the Championship.

Well I'm a welsh man living in Ipswich and a true blue as my parents moved to Ipswich when I was a junior , so mr Englishman loving in wales , stay there for all I care , I might have loyalties to my country I was born in , but when Allen is picked Johnny williams is picked , sorry I think England will , clearly beat us , and if they do then I'll support england , I guess next you will move to Norwich and slate Ipswich , get lost

Burns has been ground out this season and is z marked man by opposition his game for Wales against Holland also showed he is not international pedigree At the moment would prefer Edwards in that position or even KVY instead of him being put on left Donacian does so much of Burns work

Gotta feel a bit sorry for Wes, at this stage in his career he must offer more than Jonny Williams or Matthew Smith...maybe it's a case of experience or strength in that position that has counted. Our gain is Wales loss!

Really can't believe some of comments on here.

Fingers crossed Town go up this year. As I can see Burns leaving for the Championship to give himself a better chance of playing for Wales.

Burns is an important player for Town him and Davis are our top Assits so how anyone can say we are better off without him amazes me

Gutted for him. I'd have loved to see him go. I hope there isn't a disappointment hangover. We have more than enough to have coped whilst he was away. Is there a standby list?

It's all my about “ who you know” . I've seen it so many times in sport. If you have played at a certain level or for a certain club you're seen as “ better”, even if you're not.

I'm sure Wes is down atm but hopefully promotion with us will put a smile on his face.

Sad for Wes, but to even be considered when playing in League 1 says much about Wes and ITFC in 2022. However, reality is he/we need to be performing in the Championship so it is time for heads down and full focus on promotion THIS season. COYB

Page has picked the players he knows best even though Burns is better and fitter than some of them. No doubt Southgate will do something similar when the England squad is announced tomorrow.
