Leaders Leicester Lose at Plymouth
Friday, 12th Apr 2024 22:02

Town will definitely return to the top of the Championship if they beat Middlesbrough at Portman Road on Saturday after leaders Leicester City were beaten 1-0 by Plymouth Argyle at Home Park this evening.

Mustapha Bundu netted the only goal of the game in the 21st minute for the Pilgrims, who saw the three points out in relative comfort in the second half.

The result leaves the Blues second behind the Foxes on goal difference alone with all of the top three now having played 42 matches.

Leeds, a point behind Town and Leicester, are in action at home to Blackburn Rovers at Elland Road at 12.30pm tomorrow before the Blues face Boro at 3pm.

While a win would definitely put the Blues top, a draw might be enough depending on the Whites’ scoreline against Rovers.

It’s over to us now, 2nd chance in a week to go top. We must win this match tomorrow, Leeds will probably win their game too.

Well you would have got good odds on Leicester losing to both Millwall and Plymouth in the last week.Just goes to show there are no easy games in the championship,as we found out against Rotherham.
We still need to find some form ourselves though, otherwise tonight's result will be meaningless.

In a weird twist of fate and silly rules, Leicester never again return to the premier league to face their points deduction.

Would be great if Leicester do end up bottling it,they don't deserve to go up,after their 215 million overspend.

I'm at the stage where I wouldn't put 50p on any of the top three winning another game this season. Southampton now have a terrific chance. Whoever does miss out are going to rue many missed opportunities.
The most profound and accurate statement in the football world is....you turn the table upside down for the last 6-8 games of the season. Teams facing relegation certainly pick up more points than those chasing promotion. No one wants it !

No surprise whatsoever! Every team is scrapping in their right for various reasons. Leicester, Leeds and ourselves have very tough remaining fixtures, and as I’ve been often saying, there’s plenty more twists and turns to come before end of campaign! How outstanding an achievement it is to see our club fighting for automatic promotion!

michaeldownunder No, Sheffield Wednesday managed to turn around a huge deficit to beat Peterborough. Leicester don't seem to have the mental fortitude to win the playoffs.

Leicester have now lost two of the more favourable looking fixtures and now have to deal with two very tough home games against West Brom and then Southampton followed by an away match against Preston who could still be in the hunt for the playoffs, then Blackburn could mount a surprise on the last day of the season if they need the points to survive.
All of that is irrelevant to us, we just need to win tomorrow!

Let's not be like the player who goes mad celebrating the first goal after 12 minutes when there is so much more of the game to play, and is then left with egg on his face at the end. All we need to concentrate on is winning our own games. As others have said, there will be more twists and turns to come. He who laughs last, laughs best. But I can't deny I'm pleased with the way Leicester are playing at the moment.

Given the recent nervy performances & points dropped of the top 3, the playoffs are looking particularly treacherous now for whoever misses out on automatic promotion. Southampton must be really kicking themselves over the loss to us, as with their 2 games in hand, they'd be right in the mix had they held on to win that game.
The fact that Southampton are still in with a chance is good news for us though, as they have to play both Leicester & Leeds still, knowing if they win both, automatic promotion is still a real possibility for them. Leicester have to play West Brom too.
Our run in is not easy; Hull & Coventry away would be tough games at any point in the season, so a win at home to Middlesbrough today could be crucial.
Do we hope Norwich have 2 or 3 wins before we play Hull & thus effectively end Hull's playoff chances (season) by then? Maybe.
We will be cheering on Coventry to beat Man Utd in the cup semi, to leave them distracted & possibly avoiding heavy tackles before the final.
All of these 'small margin' factors can come into play now, which could influence the end of the season, what league we play in next season & perhaps the next 5 seasons ahead.
The other scenario, which is out of our hands, is the beneficial prospect of Leicester going up, as well as us. The Premier League is unbelievably tough & will be even tougher next season than it is this one. Having a rival that is under a transfer ban & likely to start the season with a 6 point+ deduction could be the difference in staying up or going down in our first season back. Ideally, from a strategically selfish perspective, they would get the other promotion slot & leave Leeds do battle with Southampton, West Brom & Norwich in the playoffs.
Yeah I know I'm thinking way too far ahead, but I can't help it; I'm thinking fixtures, tactics & league permutations nearly every waking moment these days; my work is suffering, my family time neglected & my sleeping time has reduced significantly too! COYB
