Depression
at 19:51 2 Sep 2021

Sorry to hear you're feeling rubbish at the moment.

I'm a clinical psychologist and work daily with people who are depressed so I thought I'd add my bit too, just in case it helps.

Firstly, there's some great advice here (as always when people are experiencing a difficult time).

The advice about some activity is excellent. It's probably the single best thing you can do. Have a goal but take small steps towards it. Trying to do too much, too soon can lead some to feeling they've fallen short of what they 'should' be doing, which ironically can make you feel worse.

Don't rule out medication. It can be a short term solution to help you feel that you can access other support or just get out a bit more. It works for many.

Don't rule out other support based on previous experience. There's loads that can be done. Counsellors can be great but there's quite a bit of variety in skill within the profession. This is because you don't need any training or qualifications to call yourself a counsellor. It's the same with 'therapist' or 'psychologist'. It's only 'clinical psychologist' that's a legally protected title. You might just need to find the professional that matches your level of need.

Finally, and most importantly, this is just a phase. You won't feel like this forever. You can and will improve and feel better quicker than you might think.

Best wishes

Anyone ever had hypnosis?
at 14:49 13 Jul 2021

You might want to look into EMDR, which is a specific approach used by some psychologists to help people following traumatic incidents such as the one you describe.

I am a clinical psychologist but it's not an approach I'm trained in. It is however one that it is in high demand and one that I know works for many. There is a solid evidence base too. I've deliberately not included any further information so that you can research/make your mind up yourself.

Hope this helps and good luck with whatever you choose to go for.

This is a ticking time bomb that is going to affect quite a few
at 09:22 21 May 2021

It's just shocking. I am a clinical psychologist who until recently worked in a Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS).

As with many others, we were just flooded. We wanted to see young people but half the job became trying to keep people on the waiting lists safe. As with other areas of the NHS, the brilliance of the staff only served to cover up the cracks in the provision up to a point. The criteria for who was accepted into the service shifted so significantly over the years.

I started a private practice seeing young people during the pandemic. I was overwhelmed with referrals within weeks. I get referrals from people who would otherwise have had to wait 4 years for their child to be seen.

The biggest positive is that the support that can (eventually) be found does work. I know that there are exceptions to this but for the huge majority, how they're feeling at the moment does pass. Best wishes to everyone who is either directly or indirectly struggling.

What a sad loss. MND is just so awful. I can see the link to his fundraising site in the other article but perhaps if it were on this thread as well then it would be easier for anyone wishing to donate to do so. It's been encouraging to read of some positive recent progress in MND research so definitely a worthwhile cause.

Leaving home after years of lock down...
at 09:01 15 Apr 2021

I've seen such a huge increase in referrals over this period. It's just been so hard, for so many.

I love seeing positives like this as another reminder of what people can achieve. Thanks for sharing. Having a goal like you have now is such a great thing to put in place, and is something that often needs a lot of work to get to planning.

CALM are great too.

Keep going...

Covid and alcohol
at 18:10 25 Feb 2021

Whilst total referrals to my psychology practice have reduced over the last year, alcohol addiction related referrals have increased.

You've taken the hardest step with what you've done already.

The support you'll be offered works. I see it work all the time.

You've got hard work ahead but it'll be worth it. Completely.

All the very best to you.

Pfizer jab side effects

I hope she's ok. Great that she's been offered the vaccine and thanks to her for the role she's doing too.

As a frontline NHS worker I've had my first dose along with many colleagues. Most of us had sore arms and a few had mild fatigue for a day or two but nothing more than that. My wife had the Oxford one as she works in a different Trust and she had similar effects.

Obviously we're all learning as we go with this to some extent, including GPs. I have proposed some research within our local Trust about some of the psychological processes that might also be associated with having the vaccine. I'm thinking particularly about things like anxiety, relief etc and how these affect us physically alongside things like a good degree of underlying stress that many workers are already experiencing. I think any effects are a combination of physical and psychological.

Lockdown blues
at 22:36 9 Jan 2021

If it's any consolation then you're far from the only one feeling like you do. I've never had more people requesting support (I'm a psychologist and do some private work). Forums like this are a good way to get some validation and advice.

There's a fine line between normal lockdown blues and something more. You describe loss of enjoyment in previously enjoyable activities and struggling to get up and function. Only you know the extent of those but my advice is that they're things to keep a check on, as are appetite and sleep quality.

Otherwise it's just about connections, routine, and maybe structuring in some exercise if you can manage. It might not always seem it but things will get better.

Vaccination rollout bottleneck

You can find it by signing up to the NHS app as well and going through the surprisingly easy process to confirm your identity.

I'm due my vaccine soon as a NHS frontline worker and was asked to have my number to take to the vaccination appointment.

Any psychologists on the board?
at 21:01 2 Sep 2020

Yes actually! The good news is that I can help. But...we'll need to arrange many, many sessions to go into this in great detail. I'm afraid it won't be cheap but the significance of a doodle like THAT just can't be ignored...

As others have said, thoughts are with you. I've seen your posts before and meant to say hello, particularly as I live in Newcastle too (there can't be many of us!). I'm a psychologist and more importantly a new dad myself so what you shared really resonated. I can only imagine how you feel but if there's anything I can do to help then add my name to the list of those who have offered already.

Bags at games
at 15:26 29 Aug 2017

Yep, in principle some form of compromise like that is great. It seems to be quite a lot about the perception that the clubs are doing something more than much else, which is what I think some people want to be reassured about.

More to the point though, I love the idea of the Newcastle fans reactions when the club branded ones are actually just big 'Sports Direct' carriers sold exclusively at their favourite shop...they love Mike Ashley so much already...

Bags aren't actually banned at Newcastle. It's recommended that people consider whether they need to bring them and are asked to be mindful of when they arrive because of the potential for the increased checks having an impact on getting into the ground though.

Routine, structure, purpose are all good but lots of people don't have these and don't have a problem like this so my point is that often (not always, I'm not generalising) there's something more and that this is the problem.

It works like OCD in the sense that there's a need to perform a beahaviour that has become habit. The compulsion is performing it and the reinforcement comes from the positive feeling of pulling the hair just like scratching an itch.

The bit that's most difficult is how the OP tried so hard not to do it. It's a vicious cycle. It's like someone trying really hard to diet and not eat fatty foods or to not smoke. They try really hard for a bit, ultimately 'fail' and then feel guilty. This only makes it more difficult when they try even harder next time and feel worse for not succeeding. But like with anything you can break the cycle but it's obviously hard and that's why I think professional advice would be useful.

I post rarely but I'm a Clinical Psychologist so can probably help a bit here. Firstly, people's suggestions are good but the most important is that you get support. GP is first stop for that.

It's basically a habit that you've developed, usually in response to something like stress or anxiety. These are ultimately what people need the help with in the longer term as it's the underlying issue. The hair pulling works in the same way as OCD really.

If you get to the point of addressing it with a professional as it sounds like you should then it'll most likely be using habit reversal therapy, which works using CBT principles. A fundamental component of that will be keeping a record of your hair pulling as much as you are aware of it as well as associated thoughts at the time etc. It's only through a full understanding of this that you'll change the behaviour.

First step is realising the problem. You've been brave enough to share and have got some supportive feedback. The biggest positive I can provide is that I've worked with lots of people with the same issue and it is very possible to manage and improve. You'll do it. All the best.

Totally agree that the system is wrong. I'm going to the game and will pay full price if needs be. Nobody has to feel obliged to help out!
