Mr. Paul Mariner
at 19:12 10 Jul 2021

I grew up in the seventies/eighties. I was fortunate enough to see games that we dominated and where we won trophies that were respected across Europe. I remember as a 10 year old, kicking a ball against the shed pretending that I was Trevor Whymark or David Johnson scoring a goal for my beloved team. I added Paul Mariner to the awesome shed scoring team in 1976 and he came very close to dispatching my hero Kevin Beattie as my favourite player. I will be honest, I did shed a tear to hear that Paul passed away. I was fortunate enough to be at Wembley behind the goal (on a school trip), when he scored the goal to take England to the World Cup in 1982. It really makes you realise your own mortality when your heroes leave you. RIP Paul, you gave me so many good memories and you will never be forgotten by me.

I have just finished listening to Part 2 of this on Radio Suffolk. I was a young boy going mad in front of the TV when we achieved this magnificent feat in 1978. I must admit, listening to this has brought several tears to my eyes. The comments by the players, the respect they gave to the supporters and the words by the great man himself remind me (not that I need it), why I have followed this great club all of my life. The fact is was dedicated to 'The Beat' made it even more special. Not really a post for comment, I just wanted to say how very proud I am after listening to this.

Excellent production Radio Suffolk!
