McAuley Told He Can Leave
McAuley Told He Can Leave
Wednesday, 16th Sep 2009 22:27

Central defender Gareth McAuley has confirmed that Town have made him available for transfer. The Northern Irish international has had a difficult start to the season and was red-carded during Tuesday’s 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest.

The 29-year-old, who was recently stripped of the captaincy, says he has been told to find a new club: “My agent got a call from the chairman who said if a club could be found for me then to go ahead.”

McAuley, who was recently linked with Middlesbrough and Sheffield United, joined the Blues last summer for £1.1 million from Leicester having been chased by former manager Jim Magilton since the previous transfer window.

Someone must be on the verge of arriving, it does seem odd to tell a player who is still in the core squad he is no longer wanted though

Hope Keane has someone else lined up,

McAuley has had his criticisms but I can see him doing well for Boro or Sheff Utd, just not for Town!!

Our top scorer from last year was actually Billy Clarke, but I won't reopen that can of worms. Yes most strange about David Wright, he's been probably our most consistent player the last two years, yet K dropped him and bought a replacement. Our brightest prostpect Rhodes sold. Now McCauley who isn't our worst defender has been told to go. The manager's ego has landed and it's much bigger than the team. Let's hope Evans pockets are very deep.

Well for a start Keane needs to stop messing about with selections and play the same team for a game or two they don't know whether they are coming or going from week to week. How can players build up partnerships and understandings? McAuley has been poor so far but Keane has made some weird decisions.

so after every game this season GM gets vilified on this site by 'fans' of Ipswich who DEMAND he be shipped out - then news is broken that he is told he can leave and 'fans' on this site want a replacement found first (even though they don't want him playing)

i can't keep up with the logic here, i bet GM can't wait to get away from the clubs 'fans' and any good CB will probably go anywhere rather than here given the amount of support all the other new signings have been given by the 'fans'

Keane's revolution seems to be turning into a revulsion, spurred on by short sighted fans who believe we have a right to expect top flight competition at FPR and cannot see that foundations are being laid to change the clubs long term fortunes from the current mid table Championship status to challenging for mid table Premier league status

Sir Bob was given the time to change things - and every manager since has struggled to live up to a time when our club punched well above its weight for a few heady years.

Even George Burley was given a 5 year plan by Sheepshanks - which ultimately succeeded before some foolhardy and rash decisions brought the house crashing down

Roy Keane has only just begun on his (initial) 2 year quest - give him and the rest of us a break and stop bloody whinging and get behind the revolution.

good luck mcauley, i for one thought you could have come good, you were pressured to much in the first season by jim and now your getting booed by tosspots whoch hasnt helped but i believe wherever you go you will prove the boo boys wrong and i wish you all the best of luck

Another very strange decision, McAuley is clearly our best centre-back, Pim may be one day, Bruce will never be the same standard. If we bring in another centre-back it should be to partner McAuley. As people are saying, what is going on at our club? I think our management really do not know what they are doing, chopping and changing every game hoping for a bit of luck to bring us a win, bizarre substitutions, David Wright seemingly of no further use, Garvan the same. Rhodes already sold behind his back, now McAuley going as well. Who's next? Watch out Richard Wright, don't be late for training!

Just puzzles me how Keane has selected him to start every game, bar the time he was dropped, and now hes been told he can leave. If he surplus to requirements why was he not out before the window closed?

If he finds a good replacement than im happy.

Not a huge surprise seeing as Bruce has been made Captain and Keane is trying to bring in another CB. McAuley is too expensive in terms of wages to be filling the bench and might actually fetch a reasonable transfer fee, so it makes sense for him to move on. Disappointing though as he looked very solid last season.

Bet Jim would take him to QPR given half a chance!

The lads confidence has been shot to bits and sometimes you just have to move on. He was exposed by a poor pass to him last night which led to his sending off but he tried to play his way out of trouble instead of getting rid and that clearance against Boro would be comical if it wasn't for Town. He can't do much right at the moment and clearly Keane doesn't rate him so he's got to bring in someone else. We need a Cundy/Mowbray figure, experienced, dominant and a leader. Watch this space then....

Luke8644 you really talk some nonsense pal. Pressured too much by Jim? He was a 28-year-old centreback we signed for seven figures, it's not like he was some kid from the youth team thrust into the spotlight. As for the captaincy thing, with years of experience behind him (some of it international) and the captaincy of his previous team, he should have been up to the job.
That said, he played reasonably well in the back four last season - but given that the defence was what let us down, said back four was not up to scratch (D Wright excepted, but god knows where he's gone.) Let's hope RK has someone decent in mind...

Is it a case that Gareth hasn`t really settled at Portman Road. He had a bad start at beginning of last season as well as this season, It does happen! Lets hope we soon get a good partnership up front and at centre back asap as this hasn`t happened for many years ie: Marshall/Mathie, Bent/Pablo, Venno/Mowbray!!!!We`ll start climbing table soon, have faith in Keane & team.

JM's decision to make McAuley captain was ridiculous and put too much pressure on the player, from which he never recovered.

The jury ius still out for me as far as Keane is concerned but I back all decisions he has made so far except for letting Rhodes go. Garvan has had more than enough chances and can't cut it anymore, David Wright has lost all his energy and gone backwards - yes he was good last season but this is a new regime and the bar has been raised - Wright is now not good enough. Thatcher never was and never will be good enough - disappointed for MaCauley as he is not the worst defender we have but if he reads this sight I should think he will be happy to leave. For reasons more than we probably know Gareth has not cut the mustard this season and it is probably best for all parties that he finds pastures new. Good luck to him I say just hope we can now find two decent centre halves because Bruce is not the answer and until he is removed from centre back we will always concede.

Its a shame to see this happen, but its the right decision. He's simply too clumsy and prone to mistakes - the last thing you need in the figurehead of a defence.

Still, quite strange how at the end of last year he was the first name on the team sheet. Just goes to show how quickly football moves.
