Taylor Move Off But Town Back for Wood?
Taylor Move Off But Town Back for Wood?
Thursday, 29th Oct 2009 14:07

Former England U21 international coach Peter Taylor will not be joining Roy Keane’s backroom staff. The Blues have confirmed that talks took place but also that the ex-Wycombe Wanderers boss will not now be moving to Town.

A Town spokesman said: “Ipswich can confirm that Peter Taylor will not be joining the coaching staff at Portman Road.

“Senior management staff at the club and Mr Taylor held discussions over a possible role in support of the coaching team. However, there will be no further progression of those talks.”

Earlier in the week, Taylor revealed that he had spoken to Keane after being spotted watching the recent Swansea and Watford games at Portman Road.

The ex-Brighton, Hull, Stevenage and Leicester boss says he doesn't want to anything beyond the club statement: "We couldn’t come to an agreement and it’s best for all parties just to leave it at that.

"I don’t want to add anything to the statement. The comments are fine by me.

"I don’t think it would be in the interests of any of us to go any further into the reasons why."

Meanwhile, Sheffield Wednesday have placed central defender Richard Wood on the transfer list. Wood was targeted by the Blues during the transfer window but the clubs were unable to complete a deal before the deadline, with the Owls keen to extend the 24-year-old’s contract.

However, Wednesday boss Brian Laws says they have been unable to agree new terms: "It is very disappointing to be in this situation, but Richard Wood is going to be put on the transfer list. "We have been talking to him about a new contract for months now, but Richard and his agent believe he should be the highest-paid player at this football club.

"The gap in negotiations cannot be bridged because Richard is demanding an amount that we cannot justify paying. His opinion is that if he cannot get the wage he wants from Sheffield Wednesday he will go somewhere else.”

Town are still looking for a centre-half and may well swoop for Wood on loan with a view to a permanent deal in January. Coventry City are also believed to be interested.

Celtic central defender Stephen McManus has also again been linked with the Blues. McManus turned down the chance to join Town on loan in August. The Blues would not be able to move for the Scottish international either on loan or permanently until the transfer window opens in January.

Elsewhere, Crystal Palace have paid Town the money they owed for striker Alan Lee and are now no longer under a transfer embargo. The Eagles had defaulted on part of the £600,000 they agreed to pay for the Irish striker in the summer of 2008.

If Coventry want him, he must be good. I don't remember him from games against wednesday but is probably just the kind of mercenry we need...

Shame about Taylor, well respected and would have been a good addition.

Hopeful of Woods though, think he would be a good signing to solidify the back 4 and give us a bit more back-bone for the tough season ahead. Hope we can do a deal quickly, with MaC out for 2 weeks.

Interesting to see whether we'll be attractive enough at rock bottom with no wins, although Laws comments above indicate he has some arrogance if he feels he should be the highest payed player? Depends on his motives (money or success) i'm sure as confident ME can meet his wages!

he wouldnt be buying players for us thats the job of the ceo and evens after roy has told them the players he wants, but he would of had an opinion on what happens on the training pitch which is where i believe things are going wrong for us

the club is struggling to get anyone to join us, it sometimes seems. Then again look at our league position and how indifferently we played against lowly Plymouth. Never mind all the stiff upper lip talk about everyrhing coming together, to any outsider we are beginning to look like a side that cannot win and who is also starting to look like a relegation certainty.

Don't lose any sleep over Taylor. He's had far more misses than hits

Ok am i the only one that thinks the defence actually is starting to look more solid?
would we not be better off getting a striker?

Wood could be a good signing, but do we really want a player though with that attitude of being the highest payed player??? Remember these are the tpe of players that can ruin dressing room sprits and leave you refusing to sign new deals at the drop of a hat.

Seems to be another person who acording to the press "was going to be in the dugout come Saturday" that isn't actually coming so excuse me for not holding my breath for Macmanus or Wood!

Wonder what the problem was?

Another week passes,no signings? Two new signings during international break? That was two weeks ago. Nobody wants to join us,WHY
Keano go for the CB and CF that all of us know will make that difference from a draw to a win. Just a thought if we would have won on the first day at Coventry, then turned all them draws into wins,we would be top and not bottom.
COYB Saturday 3-1 to Ipswich, saw them last week v Magiltons team, made QPR look good.

Keano,Keano

I am happy to hear that taylor deal is off! He is hardly a good manager even at Championship level. I remember him doing poor job at Leicester, Crystal Panace and Hull, leaving them almost relegated. And when they sacked him the replcaing managers did much better - Warnock for Palace and Brown for Hull so I didn't see any positive think he can give us as a club. What makes me unconfortable though is that we are trying to get such a loser on board. Not a good sign.
Let us hope we do better in the future!

GeorgiDoundarov - peter taylor got hull promoted from league 2 to the championship to me thats a pretty good job

Agree tonnyblue! But we are talking promotion from Championship to Premiership here and Peter Taylor did awful in this regards with different teams. In addition Hull is a team that belongs to the Championship (they will soon be back here) and the promotion to the Championship was not something difficult to do anyways...

tommyblue: quite right. The guy has got several teams promoted in his time (not wishing to be childish, but the Keane lovers all seem to think he's the dogs because he got one team promoted once).

He did seem to hit a point with any one club that he couldn't take any further. But his teams played good football and his U21 England team was excellent and I still think it was a mistake to replace him there.

I do think Keane needs some kind of experience behind him. His assistant (who's name I can't even remember, whcih says it all) doesn't have it.

Hang on GeorgiDoundarov, are you saygin that promotion is easy?

Since when?

Surely if this season so far has shown you anything, it's that promotion is not easy.

Given a half-decent squad and a bunch of money we seem to be bottom.

So don't ever assume that anything for a manager is easy.

Richard Wood would definitely improve our defence IF he stays FIT. He has
an injury history.Last season he was OK but before that there were problems
for 2 seasons BUT it looks they are over NOW? Very experienced for his age,24 now,and at 20 many saw him as a premiership standard central defender.

2009 - 2010 10 2 Sheffield Wednesday
2008 - 2009 42 0 Sheffield Wednesday
2007 - 2008 27 2 Sheffield Wednesday
2006 - 2007 12 0 Sheffield Wednesday
2005 - 2006 30 1 Sheffield Wednesday
2004 - 2005 34 1 Sheffield Wednesday
2003 - 2004 12 0 Sheffield Wednesday

The Millwall chant "noone likes us" is starting to spring to mind. Noone wants to join us and other supporters are loving the fact that we have not won a game because everyone (bar Man Utd) absolutely hate Keane.
I'm quite happy about it all to be honest (except the not winning bit) - creates a bit of siege mentality and the fans are starting to rally around the team a lot more.
I honestly believe that Keane will not let us down and we will be happy with his appointment when his two year contract ends.

Although I don't think PT would be a step in the right direction if he was to be manager, however as a 'qualified' assistant to RK then it would have been a great move.

Shame

ricahrd wood or mcmanus from celtic would b a quality signing. need a leader at the back. i do think this is probably jus going to be another player 'linked' with us and nothing will come off again but im sure keane will get the right man ... eventually !

If we singed Stephen Mcmanus from Celtic I promise tpo never say a bad word about Keane on here again ;o$! Champions league exoerience, has dominated with Celtic for a number of years (albeit in the sh*t scottish league). I doubt it will happen!

if you thinhk about it, I dont think too many decent players will want to come and play with us! They will k now how bad we and our defence currently are and know how much pressure will be on them - so if we do sign anyone they will have to have alot of balls and confidence - thats why it is def better to go for 2 as it seems he may be tryng to do!

A real shame about Peter Taylor - would have been an ideal coach. I just hope Roy has something else up his sleeve.

I know TWTD are here to report on any type of Ipswich news - but is worth commenting on possible loan signings any more? The papers, Roy, Websites have been going on about potential signings for months now. Result: Absolutely nothing!
