Taylor Move Off But Town Back for Wood?
Taylor Move Off But Town Back for Wood?
Thursday, 29th Oct 2009 14:07

Former England U21 international coach Peter Taylor will not be joining Roy Keane’s backroom staff. The Blues have confirmed that talks took place but also that the ex-Wycombe Wanderers boss will not now be moving to Town.

A Town spokesman said: “Ipswich can confirm that Peter Taylor will not be joining the coaching staff at Portman Road.

“Senior management staff at the club and Mr Taylor held discussions over a possible role in support of the coaching team. However, there will be no further progression of those talks.”

Earlier in the week, Taylor revealed that he had spoken to Keane after being spotted watching the recent Swansea and Watford games at Portman Road.

The ex-Brighton, Hull, Stevenage and Leicester boss says he doesn't want to anything beyond the club statement: "We couldn’t come to an agreement and it’s best for all parties just to leave it at that.

"I don’t want to add anything to the statement. The comments are fine by me.

"I don’t think it would be in the interests of any of us to go any further into the reasons why."

Meanwhile, Sheffield Wednesday have placed central defender Richard Wood on the transfer list. Wood was targeted by the Blues during the transfer window but the clubs were unable to complete a deal before the deadline, with the Owls keen to extend the 24-year-old’s contract.

However, Wednesday boss Brian Laws says they have been unable to agree new terms: "It is very disappointing to be in this situation, but Richard Wood is going to be put on the transfer list. "We have been talking to him about a new contract for months now, but Richard and his agent believe he should be the highest-paid player at this football club.

"The gap in negotiations cannot be bridged because Richard is demanding an amount that we cannot justify paying. His opinion is that if he cannot get the wage he wants from Sheffield Wednesday he will go somewhere else.”

Town are still looking for a centre-half and may well swoop for Wood on loan with a view to a permanent deal in January. Coventry City are also believed to be interested.

Celtic central defender Stephen McManus has also again been linked with the Blues. McManus turned down the chance to join Town on loan in August. The Blues would not be able to move for the Scottish international either on loan or permanently until the transfer window opens in January.

Elsewhere, Crystal Palace have paid Town the money they owed for striker Alan Lee and are now no longer under a transfer embargo. The Eagles had defaulted on part of the £600,000 they agreed to pay for the Irish striker in the summer of 2008.

The man we should have had went to Plymouth the other week. Keane isnt going to want some proven coach cos he will feel threatened.

i like the idea of McManus at the back - but i cant swap him signing for a world without the wise musings (and pointless whinging) of CGS

so it'll have to be Wood please Mr Keane, sir.................( he might be reading this, you dont know he isn't!)

No one will join us because they see Keane as a nighmare to work with! You only have to read biographys of players he has played with (Goram, etc).We will be lucky to see anyone join apart from his mates or Sunderland players who he rated!

No surprise Taylor wont work with a man who is too big headed and will probably not take on board any constructive critisism anyway. Good luck Taylor wherever you go next.

Just because 1 or 2 ex team mates bitch about Keane doesn't make the whole truth? If he's such a nightmare why did Leadbitter & Edwards come here having played under him at Sunderland??????

Lets face it there will always be people you don't get on with & clash in life, Keane seems to me as one who doesn't dwell on it he just sucks it up & gets on with the job in hand.....

Yeap all this speculation doesn't help the cause, but everybody knows stories sell papers & they have pages to fill......

Keep the faith guys things are improving

It's a shame Peter Taylor isn't joining us. His record as manager is very good, so to have him an an assistant would have been brilliant. As for the comment about him paying £2m for Kuqi, well, our manager has spent £4m on Delaney, Healy, Martin and Priskin!

I think bringing in someone like Taylor would help secure Keane's posiiton, not threaten it. Keane surely can't last much longer on his own if we continue like we are, but bring in Taylor and the Keane & Taylor partnership would surely need to be given a few months to suceed.

Let's hope we can beat Derby, as with few matches in November we will probably otherwise go into December in the bottom-three.

the comments about people not joining us are two fold - one because we aren't that appealing cos we are BOTTOM! and going nowhere fast, and two, everything gets reported these days - years ago we enquired about players and staff and didn't get them but it wasn't in the press everyday - that's just football these days and especially with Town having such a high profile manager too.

lets just get behind Roy and the boys, get some youth in like Mr Wickham and we will rebuild.

Wood could be good but number one priority has to be a 20 goals a season striker!

I hate to say it but if you look at my comment on the original article, I said this would not come off.

I agree with superblueflude here.... who would you want him to replace? I hear few people complaining that Bruce isn't playing... and then McAuley who has hit form now and has been brilliant... our best CB! However if Stead keeps scoring then we don't need a new striker and IMO we are set! Just keep playing til the full time whistle boys!

I bet its because Taylor thought keane was an idiot as i do! I mean,
'I don't think it would be in the interests of any of us to go any further into the reasons why', is basically saying there were other reasons but we're not going to tell you. Im not surpriesed. As for the Wood story again, I'm hopefull but not, expectant.

The moment I heard about the Hull chairman going made me think that Taylor is on his way back there. Must say, I wasn't excited at the thought of him coming to Portman Road so am not disappointed.

I work in a pub near Hillborough so it's a Wednesday pub; worked tonight and asked my boss about Richard Wood.

"You can take him, a load of old tosh"

The general consensus of the locals was of the same negativity - this didn't fill me with confidence I must say.

Shame we couldn't get Taylor, but i also agree Wood could be a good addition.

I work at Hillsborough, and from what I've seen of Wood, he'd make no difference whatsoever to our defence. We need someone like Morgan from other side of city. A real leader, and hard case too.

Someone get on the blower to Canada and persuade De Vos to come out of retirement.
