|Why were attendances so low in the early 90s?|
at 20:39 19 Aug 2015
It's great to see so many fans at Portman Road, an average of 19,217 per league match so far this season.
I was looking back at how this compared to the early 1990s, which were only ten years after winning the UEFA Cup.
On 20th August 1991 in the first match of what turned out to be our promotion season, 8,937 people attended the match against Port Vale.
On 15th August 1992 in our first match in the Premiership against Aston Villa, 16,818 people attended. That same season on 12th September against Wimbledon only 13,333 people turned up.
Even going back to the UEFA Cup Winning season the attendances were sometimes below 20,000 despite the stadium holding many more (32,274 against Liverpool).
I suppose different times with less popularity of football, and perhaps a slightly lower population back then, but it's still surprising and shows how good our current attendances are.
