Derby's Hulse and Gio Linked Again
Derby's Hulse and Gio Linked Again
Sunday, 3rd Jan 2010 12:20

Town are again being linked with a move for Derby County striker Rob Hulse. The 30-year-old was previously mentioned in connection with a move to Portman Road a fortnight ago when Wolves, Newcastle and Middlesbrough were all also said to be interested. Former loanee Giovani Dos Santos is also again said to be on Keane's wish-list

According to one of this morning’s tabloids, boss Roy Keane will look to ship out strike pair Tamás Priskin and Pablo Couñago in order to fund the move for the former Crewe frontman, who is rated at around the £2.5 million mark. Hulse is contracted to Derby until 2011.

Elsewhere, Tottenham midfielder Giovani Dos Santos is again linked with another loan move to the Blues, despite Keane saying that the Mexican international joining a Championship side was highly unlikely earlier in the week: “I only got to work with the boy for a week or two and my first impressions were that he’s a talented boy and that he shouldn’t be playing in the Championship.

“I think Harry [Redknapp] was going to give him a chance before he broke a couple of bones in his foot a couple of months ago.

“He’s got a lot to gain by playing games, but I’m sure he’ll have plenty of options, not just in the Championship, not just in the Premiership but maybe with other teams in Europe.

“It’s a big ask, I would very much doubt it, not that I want to be too negative about it, but it would be a tough one to pull off.”

Keane says he has kept in contact with Redknapp in recent months, presumably with Dos Santos not the only subject of their conversations, the Blues' boss having confirmed that he is targeting other Premier League players during January: “Gio’s a top player but I think Harry’s changed his number from the amount of times I keep ringing him. I’ve spoken to him enough over the last one or two months.

“A talented boy like Gio will I’m sure have plenty of options. He got here last year which was fantastic and did really well for the club and would change the dynamics of your team and your club.

“But it’s a big ask whether we can get him or not. There’s the financial side of it and I'm sure the boy will have plenty of options. You’ve got to ask yourself whether players at a Premiership club want to go to the Championship and if they do I’m sure they’d like to go to a team near the top.

“There are big hurdles for us to get over if we want to get one or two players in, as much as I’m confident when I get a chance to speak to the players that I can sell the club, but these players have got options and it’s going to be tough."

2.5m for Hulse...I hope not!

Hulse is not a £2.5million player. Few clubs will pay much money for a player the wrong side of 30 with a history of serious injuries and his goal return at the moment is no better than that of our current forwards. Don't get me wrong, he might offer a different option and could well be worth a punt, but not for that sort of money.

Can understand the plans to move on Priskin and Counago, as both are probably on relatively high wages and are not delivering much in the way of a return. Unfortunate though, as we would be lucky to recover half of what we paid for Priskin for the pair of them.

Glad we are looking to bring in a striker. Not surprised we are looking to offload Priskin and Pablo. Very similar players, certainly don't need both. I'd like to see a hungry, up-and-coming striker from the lower leagues. Someone who might grow into a Premiership team, rather than another fading Championship player on a sideways move in his career journey.

Santos would be entertaining, but we wouldn't be able to keep him, so ulimately it may lead us into a false sense of security like at the end of last season.

wouldnt want hulse at that price, in fact, wouldnt want hulse period. would rather stick with what we have than get hulse in, and especially wouldnt want to ship out tamas and pablo, just so that we could get him in! definitely not worth two players.

wouldnt mind tamas moving on though, not been roys best signing, struggled to settle, and really hasnt offered much. pablo i would love to stay though, he offers something different, and would be a shame to see him go, he just needs a run in the side!! hes been left in the dark since his miss at bristol, one miss does not deserve all this!!

as for gio....let the prayers begin!!

I like Hulse as a player, one of the finest target men in this division. With Stern failing to live up to his billing, I feel this would be a good signing. Giovani dos Santos and Federico Macheda would both be class as well.

I'd rather keep Priskin than Hulse, think Hulse is nothing better than a run of the mill 10-12 goals a season striker

Priskin might come good.

might be worth looking at lower league strikers who know where the goal is - Richard Brodie at York?

Know a lot of derby fans. They can't wait to see the back of Hulse. Is this really the 20+ goal a season striker we need? I think not.

just been on the sky website and keane says: "Gio is probably too good a player for the Championship but I'd love to have him back here,Harry Redknapp is willing to let him go out on loan again and I think he's changed his phone number because I've been ringing him so much lately. If I could talk to the boy I'm confident I could sell Ipswich to him."

Fingers crossed there could be something in this.

i think we should keep the 2.5 m rob hulse aint all dat good tbh n tbh i think priskin should b given more of a chance he aint replyed much 4 us n wen he has it has either been as a sub or beein taken off tbh he deservse more of a chance n as far as gio is conserned i think keane maid it clear yesterday sayin the chance of gettin him on loan is very slim

Firstly, this is tabloid reporting! We can not get carried away.

However, thoughts as follows:

- Good idea to ship Pablo and Priskin out. Although a huge fan of Pablo's, it's time to be realistic. He does not score enough goals. Priskin may be a decent player - but has not settled. I would try to recoup some of the money we spent on him.

- Hulse - A decent player. At 30 years of age not worth £2.5M! Would be better than Pablo, John and Priskin. Wickham is one for the future.

Would love to see Santos back at the club. He would give everyone a massive boost, loan or no loan. Hulse a pretty ordinary player. Prisken a waste of space.

Just reporting what's been reported, so you're not being critical of me! I'd certainly be sceptical of the suggestions of Gio coming back as Keane basically said it was highly unlikely that he'd go to any Championship club on Thursday when he was asked about him.

Can see Pablo going but not Priskin, while Hulse wouldn't be a bad shout, although probably not for the money suggested.

Bring them both in but not 2.5m for Hulse, £1m max I'd say and if we could ever get Gio back it would be the best thing that has happened here since bringing Gio in last season lol

Priskin has been an abject failure, hope he gets moved on,though his record at PR is hardly likely to get him any where quickly . I am not over excited about Counago, he has done a job in past but think the best by date has now become sell by .Just my opinion ,no doubt i'll upset someone but hey ho .

paper talk, dont get too excited people. Read what Keane said, not what a tabloid hack has written. I am thinking another Spurs player other than Gio is in his mind.

dirty..Pablo is my favourite player, i cannot say how much you have upset me!!!!!
ha ha ha ha!!
Really tho, i have liked his style of play from the minute i first saw him, but i think the time is right for both parties to say farewell, as long as he is replaced with quality, not sure Hulse is that quality especially at 2.5m.

In have always said that whoever we sign you need to give them a chance to settle...however, with a striker, now i feel that this is a little bit different, they deal in goals, and when they are lacking, then they are perceived to be a failure (rightly or wrongly).
Priskin is in an awful position, as are all strikers who do not find the back of the net,the more he does not score, the less he plays, and when not playing, he certainly isnt gonna score!
Perhaps a loan period would suit all round?
If we sign Hulse i will support him fully, however i think its paper talk, and i strongly believe that the right striker is out there for us somewhere.
